Season ends for Atlantic girls hoops with Regional loss to Shenandoah

Sports

February 9th, 2019 by admin

The Atlantic Trojans girls basketball team had their season come to an end on Saturday night with a loss to Shenandoah 61-41. The Trojans started the game strong but a 20-0 run to end the first half was the difference maker for the Fillies, and they pulled away to win the Class 3A Region 8 Quarterfinal game.

The Trojans jumped out to a 12-10 lead by the end of the first quarter due to some strong defensive pressure. The Fillies settled down in the second quarter and started to find the open spots against the Atlantic press, and they got some open looks. Roxy Denton and Logan Hughes helped the Shenandoah offense come alive in the second quarter. Denton had 8 of her 20 points in that second quarter run, while Hughes poured in 9 of her 29 that period. Shenandoah led 31-15 at halftime and 43-27 after three quarters.

The Fillies improve to 13-9 and will move on to face Red Oak in the Regional Semifinals next Wednesday night in Atlantic at 7:00pm. The Tigers advanced with a decisive 77-21 win over Clarinda.

Atlantic has their season come to a close with a 4-18 record in their first year under Head Coach Dan Vargason. Coach Vargason said after the game he was proud of the fight and improvement his team showed.

Despite the poor record, Coach Vargason said his first season at the helm was a positive experience and he thinks they are headed in the right direction.

Atlantic says goodbye to seniors Baylee Newell, Alyssa Ginther, and Heidi Williams. Newell finishes with over 600 points for her career.

Video shows boy screaming that he needs to use bathroom

News

February 9th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

ELDORA, Iowa (AP) — Video taken on the cellphone of a woman accused of abusing her  boyfriend’s young son shows the boy screaming in agony that he needed to use the bathroom.
The Courier reports that prosecutors showed the cellphone video of the 8-year-old boy Friday during the kidnapping trial of 40-year-old Traci Tyler. In the footage, the child is seen dressed in pajamas in a dining room as he screams and holds his groin before wetting himself minutes later.

Tyler and her boyfriend, 30-year-old Alex Shadlow, are each charged with kidnapping. They are being tried separately. The couple is accused of locking the boy in the basement for at least nine hours a day during the summer of 2017. Investigators say the boy was forced to sleep on the concrete and use a tin cup as a toilet. The couple argued that’s because they had trouble with him urinating in the house.

Testimony in Tyler’s trial is set to resume Tuesday.
