Sports

July 21st, 2022 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson has been named to the Biletnikoff Award watch list, given annually to the nation’s best receiver regardless of position. Hutchinson, who was named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Football Team earlier this month, is entering his redshirt senior season as one of the Big 12’s top receiving targets.

A native of Jacksonville, Florida, Hutchinson had an impressive 2021 season, earning First Team All-Big 12 honors for the second-straight season while breaking the ISU single-season record and leading the Big 12 Conference with 83 receptions.

Hutchinson had 987 receiving yards and five touchdowns last season, running his career totals to 147 receptions, 1,758 yards and nine touchdown receptions. He leads all active Big 12 receivers in career receptions (T-14th nationally) and receiving yards (18th nationally).

Hutchinson was 23rd nationally in catches per game (6.4) and owns an active streak of 25-straight games with a reception. He had a monster performance against Oklahoma State with career highs in catches (12) and receiving yards (125).

Iowa State opens the season Saturday, Sept. 3 against Southeast Missouri at MidAmerican Energy Field at Jack Trice Stadium. Football season tickets are on sale now for as low as $249 or $35 per game. Join Cyclone Nation this fall by clicking here.

Beutel to sign with White Sox as Undrafted Free Agent

Sports

July 20th, 2022 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa senior Ben Beutel will sign an undrafted free agent contract with the Chicago White Sox organization, it was announced following the conclusion of the 2022 Major League Draft.

Beutel is the fifth Hawkeye from the 2022 team that will continue with a Major League Baseball organization.  Iowa had four players – Adam Mazur, Peyton Williams, Dylan Nedved and Duncan Davitt – selected in the 2022 MLB Draft.

The Davenport, Iowa, native had a breakout senior season in 2022, finishing 3-0 with a 1.47 ERA and four saves in 29 appearances – the most on the team.  The southpaw finished with 41 strikeouts to just six walks over 30 2/3 innings and he allowed just 22 hits.

During the season, Beutel picked off nine base runners, which led to him earning a Rawlings Gold Glove as the best defensive pitcher in Division I college baseball.  He was also an ABCA/Rawlings second-team All-Midwest Region and a second-team All-Big Ten honoree.

Beutel finished his collegiate career with a 4-4 record and a 4.84 ERA.  He had 71 strikeouts over 74 1/3 career innings.

Iowa’s Logan Lee previews the new season

Sports

July 20th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa junior defensive tackle Logan Lee says it was worth the wait to get on the field. After redshirting in 2019, the native of Illinois saw action in only two games in 2020 before bursting on the scene a year ago. Lee started all 14 games and finished with 48 tackles, including three sacks.

Lee says he is working on improving his pass rush this upcoming season.

Lee is part of a defensive line that he says will have even more depth with several new faces.

Iowa opens September third against South Dakota State.
