(Update) — The Atlantic Police Department reports two people were injured in a two vehicle accident in Atlantic this (Monday) morning. Officials say a vehicle driven by Larry Shafer, of Atlantic, was traveling eastbound on 7th Street approaching Linn, at about the same time Debra Frazier, of Atlantic, was traveling west on 7th Street.

Shafer’s vehicle crossed the center line into the turning lane and continued eastbound across the turning lane into the westbound lane, where it hit the front driver’s side bumper of Frazier’s vehicle.

Authorities say Shafer refused treatment at first, but was later transported to the hospital to be checked out for what were considered to be non-life threatening injuries. Frazier was also transported to Cass County Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Atlantic Police cited Shafer for failure to maintain control and not wearing a seat belt. Frazier was cited for driving while suspended and for having no proof of liability insurance.

The Mills County Sheriff’s office said Monday (today), a Malvern man was arrested Friday for Driving While Revoked and Failure to hold SR-22 Insurance. 49-year old Michael Scott Holtz, was being held in the Mills County Jail on $2,000 bond. And, 22-year old Julius Bernard Davis, of Omaha, was arrested Sunday in Mills County, on a warrant out of Pottawattamie County for OWI 1st. His bond was set at $1,000.

The Glenwood Police Department reports 32-year old Brandy Hawkins, of Glenwood, was arrested Saturday, for OWI 1st Offense. Her bond was set at $1,000. And, 22-year old Shelby Conn, of Nebraska City, Nebraska, was arrested Saturday for Burglary in the 3rd Degree. Bond was set at $5,000.

A Minnesota man was arrested following an investigation into a break-in that occurred Feb. 24th at a Council Bluffs car dealership. Bluffs Police say 60-year old Samuel Berry, of Brooklyn Park, MN, was being held in the Pottawattamie County Jail on a charge of Burglary in the 3rd degree. His bond was set at $5,000.

According to authorities, his arrest followed an investigation into a break-in at one of the buildings at the Rhoden Auto Center complex. While Rhoden employees were reviewing surveillance footage of the break in, one of them noticed that the suspect looked like a man who had been in the day before and asked a clerk to make change for a dollar.

After comparing video of the man with the burglary suspect, the employees were convinced that it was the same person. They also had video of the vehicle that the man had arrived in the previous day. They then called the police and showed the videos to Officer Shawn Landon. After speaking with the employees, Officer Landon began checking the area for a car matching the suspect vehicle’s description.

As Officer Landon was checking the parking lot of Motel 6 at 3032 South Expressway, he noticed a man placing something in the trunk of a bronze colored Cadillac. The man and the vehicle matched the descriptions of those in the video, so Officer Landon made contact with him. The man was identified as Berry.

After further examination of the videos, it was determined that Berry was the man seen breaking into Rhoden Auto Center on the night of the 24th. Berry’s vehicle was impounded and he was placed under arrest. On February 26th, a search warrant was obtained for Berry’s vehicle. Located in the trunk of the vehicle were specific clothing items worn by Berry during the commission of the burglary, a pry bar used in the burglary and property belonging to Rhoden Auto Center.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports two recent arrests. On Sunday, 27-year old John Antonio Aparo, Jr., of Griswold, was arrested on charges of OWI 1st Offense and Possession of a Controlled Substance 1st Offense (Marijuana). Aparo was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released later that day on his own recognizance.

And on Friday, Cass County deputies arrested 33-year old Kevin Earl Pieper, Jr., of Cumberland, on a Shelby County warrant. Pieper was taken to the Cass County Jail and transferred later to Shelby County.

The Page County Sheriff’s Office reports a Clarinda man turned himself-in to authorities Saturday afternoon. 26-year old Nicholas Aaron Formaro, of Clarinda, was wanted on Page County Warrants for Contempt – Violation of a no contact order, and Harassment 1st Degree. Formaro posted the bond and was released pending further court proceedings.

The Red Oak Airport Commission reports a flight instructor based in Red Oak, was honored by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as Iowa’s Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) of the Year, for 2016. Norm Yeager was also selected as the CFI of the Year for the FAA Central Region, which includes Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas, Kentucky and Tennessee. As a result, he was one of eight finalists for the FAA’s National CFI of the Year award.

A ceremony honoring Yeager will be held 6:30-p.m. March 7th, at the Red Oak Airport. Snacks and punch will be provided at the event, which is open to the public. Afterward (at 7-p.m.) an FAA pilot safety meeting will be held on the topic of “Loss of Control.” The session will be conducted by the Des Moines Flight Standards District Office (FSDO) team.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office says a woman from Afton reported Sunday afternoon, that someone had taken a black, Finish Line trailer (IA license plate AV 6341) from her property in the 300 block of S. Clayton Street, in Afton. The theft resulted in a loss of about $1,700.

Adair County Sheriff Jeff Vandewater has released his weekly arrest report. In it, the Sheriff reports 39-year old Robert Gene Bashaw, of Adair, was arrested Feb. 24th in Adair, on a charge of Sexual Abuse in the 3rd degree. The alleged victim is a female in her teens. Bashaw was released from custody Feb. 25th, on $10,000 bond.

Also arrested in Adair County recently, was 23-year old Shuoyang Yu, of Iowa City. He was taken into custody Feb. 22nd  near the 85 mile marker of eastbound Interstate 80 by an Iowa State Patrol Trooper. Yu was pulled over for speeding. A check of the vehicles’ license plate also revealed the license of the registered owner of the vehicle had been revoked. Yu was arrested for Driving Under Suspension. He was also charged with Possession of Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, after a search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of a backpack in the trunk. The backpack contained several green bottles of a green leafy substance that resembled marijuana. It also contained a glass pipe, an electronic vaporizer, hashish and one package of an edible THC-infused candy. Yu was released from the Adair County Jail Feb. 23rd, after posting a $1,000 bond.

Other arrests in Adair County include: 54-year old Timothy John Vaneaton, of Orient, who pulled over Feb. 23rd for not wearing a seat belt. Vaneaton was subsequently arrested for Driving While Barred. He was later released on $2,000 bond; 35-year old Jennifer Marie Woollums, of Greenfield, was arrested Feb. 25th on an arrest warrant. Woollums was then transferred to the custody of Adams County authorities; On Feb. 27th, 25-year old Tarayia Shilon Brooks, of West Des Moines, was arrested in Stuart for Driving While Barred. The woman was then released on the citation; And, on Feb. 24th, Deputies in Adair County arrested 33-year old Dylan Joseph Evanoski, of Des Moines. He was serving the balance of his two-day sentence on a warrant for Possession of a Controlled Substance/Meth-1st offense, when authorities were notified Evanoski was wanted on a warrant out of South Dakota for Possession of a Schedule 1 or 2 Controlled Substance. He was being held at the Adair County Jail pending extradition to South Dakota.

At the direction of Governor Terry Branstad, the Iowa Department of Revenue (IDR) has determined it will grant an extension to certain taxpayers to file and pay 2015 Iowa individual income tax returns without underpayment of estimated tax penalty. Taxpayers who earn at least 2/3 of their income from farming or commercial fishing will have until April 30 to file and pay their 2015 returns.

Iowa Code section 422.21 allows the Director of Revenue to allow further time for filing returns if good cause exists. Late in 2015 the federal government enacted legislation impacting certain tax benefits known as federal “extenders.” Current Iowa law does not conform to these federal provisions and many taxpayers have waited to file their 2015 returns to see if the Iowa Legislature would “couple” with these provisions. To date, the Legislature has not yet reached a decision on how to address coupling.

The mission of the Iowa Department of Revenue is to serve Iowans and to support government services in Iowa by collecting all taxes required by law, but no more.

Money Talk, Financial Education for Women, will be offered locally this March by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. The 5-session class gives women the knowledge to make major financial decisions and improve their lives. Designed to help women improve their money management skills and overall level of financial knowledge, Money Talk will be held Thursdays, starting March 3rd, from 6:30 to 8:30-p.m., at the Cass County Community Center in Atlantic. Registration deadline is Tuesday, March 1st to ensure materials are available for participants.

The five week course will cover the following topics:

March 3: Financial Basics – Sandra McKinnon, Iowa State University Extension
March 10: Insurance Essentials – Tammy Cullen, Cullen & Associates

March 17: Investment Fundamentals – Jenny Johnson, Wiges & Johnson

March 24: Retirement Realities – Megan Roberts, Megan Roberts State Farm

March 31: Legal Issues -Jody Lorence, Otto, Lorence & Weiderstein, PLLC

The program is strictly educational, using a research-based Extension curriculum, and does not promote any company or product. Local speakers were invited to share their subject matter expertise, and to be a voice of experience for participant questions.

The cost for the 5 week program is $25 per person. This includes all sessions, handout materials and a 192-page workbook that participants will use to track their goals and progress. This program registration fee is below the usual course fee of $75 per person due to support from the Cass County Extension Council and local sponsors Cullen & Associates; Wiges & Johnson, Ameriprise Financial; Megan Roberts, State Farm; and Otto, Lorence & Wiederstein, PLLC.
