Iowa State is looking to end a losing streak in the Cy-Hawk Series in Saturday’s 69th meeting in Kinnick Stadium. The Hawkeyes have won the last six games in the series. Cyclone sophomore receiver Jaylin Noel.

Noel says a key will be solving the Iowa defense.

Noel says the Cyclone offense will also need to handle the noise in Kinnick Stadium.

Drake prepares for home opener against Missouri S@T

Sports

September 9th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Drake coach Todd Stepsis liked what he saw from his team despite a 56-14 loss at defending FCS champion and top ranked North Dakota State. The Bulldogs open their home schedule on Saturday by hosting Division II Missouri S@T.

Stepsis saw significant progress that ranked at the bottom of the Pioneer Football League last season.

Three quarterbacks saw action last week but Stepsis says senior Ian Corwin is the clear starter after throwing two touchdown passes against the Bison.

Stepsis wants the Bulldogs to approach this week’s game in the same manner.

Atlantic ready to put together complete game at Shenandoah

Sports

September 8th, 2022 by admin

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic Trojans football team will hit the road this Friday to take on Hawkeye Ten foe Shenandoah. The Trojans come in to the contest at 0-2 and are looking to finish stronger in week 3 after making some mistakes and turning the ball over to lose a lead against Kuemper Catholic in week 2.  Atlantic Head Coach Joe Brummer has been encouraged by some solid play for portions of their first two games, but said they need to put the full effort together.

The Mustangs come in at 2-0 and are playing with confidence. Shenandoah Head Coach Ty Ratliff said it’s been a good start to the season.

Shenandoah has a solid trio of leaders. Blake Herold, Beau Gardner, and Jayden Dickerson have lead on offense and defense for the Mustangs. Gardner and Dickerson split the ball-carrying duties in the backfield and Herold is a big target outside. Coach Brummer said the Trojans will need to slow down that big three.

Atlantic has been able to sling the ball around. Caden Andersen leads Class 3A passers with 554 yards and 5 touchdowns. Coach Ratliff said he is going to need his secondary to win some one-on-one battles.

The Trojans and the Mustangs will kick off at 7:00 p.m. Friday night and we’ll have the coverage on KJAN. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call on AM 1220, FM 101.1, online at KJAN.com, and KJANTV. The night starts with our pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00 p.m. followed by pregame at 6:30 p.m. Catch a full rundown interview with Coach Brummer on Trojan Preview at 4:45 p.m. as well.

Iowa, Big Ten announce 2022-23 men’s basketball schedule

Sports

September 8th, 2022 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa, in conjunction with the Big Ten Conference, announced its 2022-23 men’s basketball schedule on Thursday.

The Hawkeyes will play 17 regular season home games and an exhibition on Mediacom Court at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Seven of Iowa’s 11 nonconference home contests will be played in Iowa City. Iowa will tipoff the 2022-23 season on Monday, Nov. 7, versus Bethune Cookman. The Hawkeyes will play nonconference road games at Seton Hall (Nov. 16) and neutral site contests versus Clemson and TCU/Cal in Niceville, Florida (Nov. 25-26) and Duke in New York City (Dec. 6).

Iowa will open Big Ten Conference play at home versus Wisconsin on Sunday, Dec. 11.

The Hawkeyes will play seven Big Ten teams twice and six teams once. Iowa will compete against Indiana, Michigan State, Nebraska, Northwestern, Ohio State, Rutgers and Wisconsin twice. Iowa will host Illinois, Maryland and Michigan, and travel to Minnesota, Penn State and Purdue.

Fran McCaffery, entering his 13th season as Iowa’s head coach, returns 11 players and welcomes four newcomers in 2022-23. The Hawkeyes return five of their top seven scorers from last year’s Big Ten Tournament championship team. Iowa won 26 games, second most in a single season in program history, and tied for fourth in the conference standings last season. The Hawkeyes have competed in the last three NCAA Tournaments and have been ranked in the final Associated Press Poll each of the last three years: No. 16 in 2020, No. 8 in 2021 and No. 25 in 2022.

Times and television/streaming information will be released at a later date.

Iowa offense prepares for Iowa State

Sports

September 8th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras says Iowa State defense will try to confuse the Hawkeyes with some unique looks in the secondary. Despite a win in last year’s game Petras was only 11 of 21 through the air for 106 yards.

Petras says the Cyclones are different than a defense with a traditional four man front.

Sophomore receiver Arland Bruce says preparation will be the key.

Iowa OC Brian Ferentz addresses struggling offense

Sports

September 8th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz says he was surprised and disappointed by the dismal performance by the Hawkeye offense in a 7-3 win over South Dakota State. Iowa managed only 166 yards of offense and one field goal while also turning the ball over twice.

Quarterback Spencer Petras has received much of the criticism after completing 11 of 25 passes in the opener and throwing an interception, but Ferentz points to himself as the one that needs to get things turned around.

Ferentz refused to say under what circumstance he would make the move to Alex Padilla at quarterback.
