Iowa State’s Hunter Dekkers on Big 12 opener against Baylor

Sports

September 22nd, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers hopes the rapid growth of a young offense continues in Saturday’s Big 12 open against 17th ranked Baylor. Dekkers has completed more than 74 percent of his passes and has eight touchdowns in a 3-0 start.

This series has featured close and hard fought games.

Dekkers says Baylor’s speed on defense is a concern.

Dekkers has leaned on senior receiver Xavier Hutchinson in the first three games. Hutchinson has 28 receptions, including five for touchdowns.

Iowa State’s Anthony Johnson previews No. 17 Baylor

September 22nd, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State safety Anthony Johnson expects a hard fought game on Saturday when the Cyclones host 17th ranked Baylor in their Big 12 opener. ISU dropped a 31-29 heartbreaker in Waco last season.

Johnson expects this game to go into the fourth quarter as well.

The 2018 game in Ames featured a fight that led to the ejection of several players.

Iowa women’s hoops set for 18 televised games in 2022-23 season

Sports

September 21st, 2022 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa, in conjunction with the Big Ten Conference, announced start times and television information for select women’s basketball games for the 2022-23 season.

In all, the nationally-ranked Hawkeyes have been selected to appear on television 18 times during the regular season, including 14 conference games, most of any Big Ten school.

For the first time in league history there will be two women’s basketball games televised over the air on FOX, with both contests including the Hawkeyes (at Michigan on Jan. 7; vs. Nebraska on Jan. 28).

Iowa will appear on ESPN or ESPN2 a minimum of five times, most amongst Big Ten teams, while its game versus Oregon State will be televised on ESPNU and Duke/UCONN will air on either ABC or ESPN2. Both neutral site games are part of the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament in Portland, Oregon.

All remaining Big Ten games and home nonconference contests will be streamed on B1G+ (subscription). Game times for those games, along with road dates at Drake (Nov. 13) and Kansas State (Nov. 17), will be announced in the coming weeks.

Iowa returns 11 letterwinners, including all five starters: Caitlin Clark, Monika Czinano, Gabbie Marshall, Kate Martin and McKenna Warnock. Clark was a consensus All-American, Nancy Lieberman Point Guard of the Year, Dawn Staley Guard of the Year, Big Ten Player of the Year, Big Ten Tournament MVP and was a finalist for the Naismith Award, WBCA Wade Trophy and John R. Wooden Award. Czinano was named an Associated Press and WBCA All-America honorable mention, and was a Lisa Leslie Center of the Year semifinalist.

Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz previews Rutgers

Sports

September 21st, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa gets ready for its Big Ten opener and first road trip when the Hawkeyes visit Rutgers under the lights. The Scarlet Knights are 3-0 and expect a big crowd.

That’s Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz who says they are preparing for a hostile environment.

Rutgers has started three different quarterbacks and Ferentz says the Hawkeyes are preparing for all of them.

This game will feature two struggling offenses that may be dealing with bad field position. Australian born punters Tory Taylor from Iowa and Adam Korsack from Rutgers are two of the nation’s best.

Keagan Johnson may not play this week but Iowa’s receivers are getting healthier. Brody Brecht saw his first extensive action and Ferentz believes they key is more practice time.

Iowa State’s Matt Campbell previews No. 17 Baylor

Sports

September 21st, 2022 by Ric Hanson

If recent history is any indication Saturday’s Big 12 opener between Iowa State and 17th ranked Baylor will be a nail biter. The teams have split their last six meetings and four of the games have been decided by three points or less.

That’s Iowa State coach Matt Campbell the Bears edged the Cyclones 31-29 last season in Waco. ISU is 3-0 and the Cyclone defense faces it toughest challenge so far.

This game has the makings of a defensive slugfest but Campbell says it is important to be ready to adjust.

Campbell says Baylor is a well rounded team.

Campbell was asked about the loss of traditions and rivalries in college football. Oklahoma and Oklahoma State announced the Bedlam Series will be discontinued when the Sooners leave for the S-E-C.

Northern Iowa’s Mark Farley on the Panthers’ 0-3 start

Sports

September 20th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

UNI coach Mark Farley says the Panthers don’t run from problems but meet them head on. UNI is 0-3 on the season and returns to Missouri Valley action this week at Western Illinois.

Farley says the Panthers are not far off.

Farley says by eliminating a few mistakes the Panthers could be 2-1 right now and feeling much different about the start.

Improved tackling is a focus and Farley says it begins with attitude. The play of the defense has been alarming and UNI ranks near the bottom of FCS by giving up 518 yards per game.

Farley says tackling issues are not solved simply by doing more hitting in practice.

Farley wants his team to focus on what it takes to get better this week and not look ahead on the schedule.
