DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Supreme Court has upheld a 2017 law that removed bargaining rights for many state employees. In cases filed by the Iowa State Education Association and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, the court ruled 4-3 on Friday that the law withstands constitutional challenges. Both decisions were written by Justice Thomas Waterman, an appointee of former Republican Gov. Terry Branstad, who supported the new law.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Montana Gov. Steve Bullock waited until May to declare his candidacy for president, but he’s wasting no time getting to the point. Bullock launched his first full day of campaigning Friday in Newton, Iowa, a town where union manufacturing jobs have vanished in the past 15 years. In doing so, he is underscoring his argument that his party can win in 2020 only if they show voters, especially in Middle America, that Democrats understand their economic concerns.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s unemployment rate remained at 2.4% in April for the 10th month in a row. Atlantic Trojan golfers Matt Gearheart and Cyle Renaud were able to advance to the Class 3A Boys State Golf Tournament on Friday but the team came up just shy.

Gearheart was Medalist at the District Tournament at Atlantic Golf and Country Club with a 74 and Renaud finished 3rd with a 76. Atlantic came up 4 shots shy of the top two teams with a 323 total. Norwalk shot 314 to win it and Carroll finished 2nd with a 319. Winterset was 4th at 347 followed by North Polk with 357.

Atlantic’s other scores were: Braden Smith 76, Tate Den Beste 93, Drey Newell 85, Garrett McLaren 93.

Atlantic Head Coach Ed Den Beste: “This was a day of delays. Had to wait close to 3 hours to tee off with lightning and thunder. Great to see Matt continue his great play. He qualifies as an individual again and this will be 4 state tournaments for him. Cyle also played well. He qualifies again as an individual and this will be his 3rd state meet. Braden had a good round but struggled to get pars on the back. Needed him to be a little lower. Tate had a rough start but had some good holes as well. Hopefully he will work on being consistent this summer. Drey continues to play at his pace. Had some putts that needed to go for him. Garrett had a better round than earlier this year. He needs to get out and play more. Disappointing that the team doesn’t go on but good to have two players move on.”
