Hawkeyes headline preseason Big Ten women’s basketball polls

Sports

October 5th, 2022 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa women’s basketball team was selected No. 1 in the Preseason Big Ten Coaches and Media polls. Junior guard Caitlin Clark was voted Preseason Player of the Year in both polls. Fifth-year post player Monika Czinano and Clark earned All-Big Ten honors in both polls and were both unanimously selected by the coaches, the conference office announced on Wednesday.

The Hawkeyes return plethora of talent from a year ago including all five starters that led the team to the Big Ten Tournament title and a share of the regular season Big Ten Championship. Iowa earned the No. 2 seed the NCAA Tournament in 2022, after another successful campaign under head coach Lisa Bluder.

Clark nabbed both Preseason Player of the Year recognition for the first time in her career. During her sophomore campaign, Clark led the country in points per game (27.0), assists (8.0), final points (863), free throws made (200), triple-doubles (5), and 30-point games (11). The West Des Moines, Iowa, native also was tabbed Big Ten Player of the Year and was a Naismith and Wooden Award finalist in 2021.

Czinano returns to the Hawkeyes after leading the nation in field-goal percentage (.679), ranked sixth in field goals made (277), 11th in total points (656) and 12th in points per contest (21.2). A season ago, she earned All-Big Ten accolades, was named a semifinalist for the Lisa Leslie Center of the Year and was an Associated Press and Women’s Basketball Coaches Association All-America honorable mention. For the second time in her career, she was named to preseason all-conference teams.

Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz previews Illinois

Sports

October 5th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Michigan gashed the Iowa defense with the run and the challenge is much the same this week at Illinois. The Illini are 4-1 and averaging nearly 195 yards on the ground.

That’s Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz, who says the Hawkeyes need to do a better job of shedding blocks.

Iowa is now next to last in the country in offense but Ferentz is convinced he saw progress against Michigan.

Ferentz says he saw potential in Illinois coach Bret Bielema when he hired him to be a Hawkeyes assistant.

Ferentz says mid season coaching moves are just a sign of the times. Wisconsin became the second school in the Big Ten west to fire its coach during the season by letting Paul Chryst go on Sunday.

Ferentz says he will never take for granted the support he has gotten during his time at Iowa.

Iowa State’s Matt Campbell previews Kansas State

Sports

October 5th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell says the Cyclones hope for a better ground attack against Kansas State. After managing only 66 yards of rushing in a loss to Baylor the Cyclones had only 26 in a loss at Kansas. Two of the factors are injuries at running back and the Cyclones have spent much of the last two weeks playing from behind.

Jirehl Brock was injured early in the loss at Kansas and Cartevious Norton has also been injured.

Being behind the last two weeks forced ISU to focus more on the pass.

Specials teams continue to flounder but Campbell says it is more about inexperience than schematics.

Campbell says a key for K-State the past couple of weeks hasa been the play of quarterback Adrian Martinez.

He says Martinez is playing like a veteran.

Hunting, harvest, weather, have deer on the move

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

October 4th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – An Iowa D-N-R deer research specialist says several factors are causing deer to be more active this time of year and motorists should be on the lookout. The first bowhunting season is underway and Jace Elliott says that is one thing that will increase movements. “It certainly will. You know, as more hunters enter the woods, it will slightly disrupt your movements. And yeah, we will see deer maybe change their habits a bit due to hunting pressure,” Elliott says.

He says changes in habitat or food availability — like the acorns falling — are going to move deer into areas with mature oaks. The start of the harvest will also push deer. “That’s going to move deer — you know transition them mostly from agricultural fields into the timber,” he says. Dropping temperatures with chilly mornings can also have an impact. “And we’re certainly going to see a lot more movement during morning and evening time,” Elliott says.

He says you should be on the lookout for deer during the dawn and dusk times of the day to avoid any collisions.
