Kansas Resident Sentenced to Over Five Years in Prison for Transporting a Person with Intent to Engage in Prostitution

Council Bluffs, IA – On August 18, 2016, Jason Gregory Johnson, a 22-year old resident of Overland Park, Kansas, was sentenced by United States Senior District Court Judge Robert Pratt, to 63 months in prison for transporting a person with the intent to engage in prostitution announced United States Attorney Kevin E. VanderSchel.

Judge Pratt also ordered Johnson to serve a term of 10 years of supervised release upon release from prison, and to pay a $100 special assessment.
The conviction resulted from an investigation that began on January 27, 2016, when the Omaha, Nebraska, Police Department was notified of a minor female being in the Omaha area committing acts of prostitution.

On January 28, 2016, Omaha police along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation made contact with the female and learned that she had engaged in acts of prostitution in Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa. Johnson was identified as the person who was providing transportation to the minor between the three states in exchange for a portion of the profits earned by the minor.

The investigation was conducted by the Omaha Police Department, Council Bluffs Police Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation. The case was prosecuted by the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.

Two Omaha men arrested in Mills County Thursday

The Mills County Sheriff’s Office reports two arrests on Thursday.  At 4:24pm Officers arrested 26-year-old Victor Joseph Carbaugh and 23-year-old Dalton Lee Rhedin of Omaha for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia and Interference with Official Acts.  They were arrested on 27oth Street and taken to the Mills County Jail and both held on $600 bond.

 

Slaying suspect accused of aiding inmate’s suicide attempt

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – A man awaiting trial in a Council Bluffs slaying has been accused of helping another inmate try to kill himself.

The Daily Nonpareil reports that Ben Lein was charged Thursday with assisting suicide. Court documents say Lein handed a towel Monday to the other inmate, who is on suicide watch. The inmate tore the towel into strips and tried to hang himself. The documents say a jailer saw the incident and removed the towel before the inmate could die.

Lein, Wesley Correa-Carmenaty and Markis Davis have pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder and other charges in the March 7 slaying of 22-year-old Anthony Walker and wounding of 32-year-old Patrick Schultz. The three are scheduled to begin trial Sept. 27.

Two arrested in Creston

The Creston Police Department reports two recent arrests. On Thursday at 4:33pm Officers arrested 35-year-old Brian Clair Smith of Creston at his residence on a Union County Warrant.  He was taken to the Union County Jail and held on $50,000 cash or surety bond.

On Friday 27-year-old Dusten Jacob Thrasher was arrested at the intersection of Adams and Sycamore Streets on a Union County Warrant. He was taken to the Union County Jail and held on $5,000 bond.

Council Bluffs Police investigate attempted burglary Friday morning

Council Bluffs Police Officers were dispatched this (Friday) morning to an address in the 500 Block of E. Pierce St for a burglary in progress. When Officers arrived the suspect fled the area.

The victim stated he was sleeping in his bedroom when he heard a loud noise in the living room. The victim stated he went to the living room to investigate and observed a white male standing just inside the door. The victim stated the suspect said, “My bad, my bad” and took off running. Officers checked the area and were unable to locate the suspect.

The suspect was described as a white male, approximately 5’8” 180 lbs.

Two Council Bluffs men arrested after shot fired outside bar

Two Council Bluffs men were arrested after an altercation that ended with a weapon being discharged.  The Council Bluffs Police Department was called to the area behind the Broadway Bar at 11:03pm Thursday for a report of shots fired.  21-year-old Dustin Arterburn and 25-year-old Dylan Waschkowski were arrested after investigation.

Officers determined that Arterburn and Waschkowski were inside the Broadway Bar and got into an altercation with one another. Waschkowski was directed to leave the bar by management. A short time later Arterburn also left the bar and located Waschkowski in the parking lot and then reportedly shoved 26-year-old Stephanie Lemon who was there with Waschkowski. In response Waschkowski then retrieved a .40 caliber handgun from his vehicle and displayed it to Arterburn and then struck him in the side of the head with the handgun just prior to discharging the weapon.  Officers noted that Arterburn had gunshot residue on the left side of his neck.  No one was injured by the shot fired and no property damage was reported.

Arterburn was charged with Disorderly Conduct, Simple Assault, and Public Intoxication. Waschowski was charged with Aggravated Assault and Discharging a Firearm in City Limits.  Both were taken without incident to the Pottawattamie County Corrections and booked in.

The Atlantic Police Department released details Thursday afternoon on multiple recent arrests.

On Monday, August 8th Atlantic Police arrested 41-year-old Kyle Hume of St. Joseph, MO for Possession of Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  He was taken to the Cass County Jail and booked in.

On Friday, August 12th Atlantic Police arrested 27-year-old Jerett Justus of Clearwater, FL for 4th Degree Theft and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  He was taken to the Cass County Jail and booked in.

That same day officers arrested 26-year old Samantha Malley of Atlantic for 4th Degree Theft and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  She was taken to the Cass County Jail and booked in.

On Sunday, August 14th Atlantic Police arrested 39-year-old Julie Luetje of Atlantic for Domestic Abuse Assault 2nd Offense.  She was taken into custody and booked in tot he Cass County Jail.

On Tuesday, August 16th Officers made two arrests. 20-year-old Leslee Dukes of Atlantic was arrested for Prescription Drug Violation, 5th Degree Theft, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  Also arrested was 23-year-old Lukus Brown of Atlantic for Prescription Drug Violation, 5th Degree Theft, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  Both were taken to the Cass County Jail and booked in.

Council Bluffs teen arrested after pursuit and crash Wednesday

A Council Bluffs teen was arrested on Wednesday after leading Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Deputies on a chase between Crescent and Council Bluffs.

At 1:40pm a Deputy attempted to stop a blue Nissan on Old Mormon Bridge Road after the vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign after exiting Interstate 29.  The vehicle did not stop and traveled into the City of Crescent and south on Old Lincoln Highway escaping from authorities. The Nissan was then located in a farm field and the Deputy approached the vehicle and ordered the driver out but he sped away once again.  The driver then ended up going southbound on Old Lincoln Highway and back into Council Bluffs avoiding another Deputy.  Finally at the intersection of Old Lincoln Highway and Coit Road the Nissan lost control and struck a parked vehicle near Spencer Avenue and North Broadway.

The driver was then apprehended and identified as 19-year-old Peter Hobart of Council Bluffs.  He was taken to the Creighton University Medical Center by Council Bluffs Fire. Charges are pending.

Iowa 25 bridge replacements over Middle River and Turkey Creek in Adair County to be discussed Sept. 6 in Menlo

AMES, Iowa – Aug. 18, 2016 – The Iowa Department of Transportation will hold a public information meeting Tuesday, Sept. 6, to discuss the replacement of two Iowa 25 bridges in Adair County – one over the Middle River approximately 1.2 miles south of Interstate 80 and the other bridge is over Turkey Creek approximately 4.6 miles south of I-80.

Iowa 25 traffic would be detoured during construction using I-80, Adair County Road P-28, and Iowa 92.

All interested persons are invited to attend this meeting anytime between 4:30 and 6 p.m. at the 5 by 80 Golf and Country Club, 1086 Iowa 25, in Menlo. The meeting will be conducted utilizing an open forum format. Iowa DOT staff will be present to informally discuss the proposed improvements. No formal presentation will be made.

The meeting space is accessible for persons with disabilities. However, if you require special accommodations at the meeting, please notify the Iowa DOT contact listed below by Aug. 30.
