AMES, Iowa – Iowa State guard Talen Horton-Tucker was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the 2019 NBA Draft Thursday evening in Brooklyn, New York.

Horton-Tucker was selected with the No. 46 pick to become the 39th former Cyclone to be drafted. Iowa State has had 12 players drafted since the Big 12 was formed in 1996-97, the third-best total in the league.

Horton-Tucker, a Chicago, Illinois native, showed his versatility in his only season in Ames. The 6-4 guard was third on the team with 11.8 points. He also averaged 4.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals for the Cyclone on his way to earning a spot on the Big 12 All-Freshman Team as well as All-Big 12 honorable mention accolades.

Horton-Tucker played in all 35 games for the Cyclones, making 34 starts as the fourth-youngest player in Division I basketball. He was second among Big 12 freshmen in scoring average, reaching double figures in 19 games. He scored 20 points in six games, posting a career-high 26 points in wins against Illinois and Texas Southern. Against the Illini, Horton-Tucker put together his best overall game, adding 14 rebounds, six assists and three blocks.

He starred on the big stage of the Big 12 Championship quarterfinals against Baylor, finishing the game with 21 points and making five 3-pointers as ISU went on to win its fourth Big 12 Championship in the last six seasons.

Horton-Tucker was ISU’s second freshman since 1992-93 (Curtis Stinson) to have 400 points, 150 rebounds and 75 assists. He is just the fourth Big 12 freshman to reach those marks as well.

Horton-Tucker becomes the sixth player that Iowa State head coach Steve Prohm has had drafted in his eight years as a college coach (Murray State and Iowa State).

Union criticizes state over mental health facility attacks

News

June 21st, 2019 by Ric Hanson

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (AP) — A state workers union is criticizing what it says is the state’s lack of response to attacks on at least four employees at the state psychiatric care facility in eastern Iowa. The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees says assaults over the past two weeks at the Independence Mental Health Institute include a nurse punched in the nose and three residential treatment workers who suffered head or neck injuries.

Union President Danny Homan said in a Wednesday news release that “a safety crisis taking place for the employees, and the state of Iowa is showing no urgency to address it.”
Iowa Human Services Department Matt Highland says workplace injuries at the institute are down from last year and says treatment provided to aggressive patients is often reviewed to help reduce violent incidents.

It’s the same facility from which nurse Tina Suckow was fired days after her federally entitled medical leave expired. Her request for time off without pay was denied. A patient beat Suckow with his fists last October.
