Iowa OC Brian Ferentz addresses offensive futility

Sports

October 13th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz says he has not considered resigning in the midst of a horrific start by the Iowa offense. The Hawkeyes are ranked last in the country in total offense and have only scored seven touchdowns in a 3-3 start to the season.

His comments come after two Big Ten West head coaches have already been fired and days after Rutgers and Indiana fired assistant coaches.

Ferentz says having played for the Hawkeyes is one of the reasons he feels added responsibility in his job.

Ferentz does not believe in making change for changes sake and that is why they have stuck with Spencer Petras at quarterback and not gone to Alex Padilla.

Iowa State basketball Media Day

October 13th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State basketball coach T.J. Otzelberger says freshmen Tamin Lipsey and Eli King are two of the options a point guard heading into the season. Big 12 Freshman of the Year Tyrese Hunter transferred to Texas and Temple transfer Jeremiah Williams is out for the season with an Achilles injury.

Otzelberger says the young point guards will be surrounded by experienced players.

Otzelberger says it will take time for the freshmen to adjust.

In Otzelberger’s first season at the helm the Cyclones used a defensive, physical atyle of play to finish 22-13 after a trip to the Sweet-16.

Otzelberger says it is a new season and a new challenge.

The Cyclones open at home on November seventh against IUPUI.

Big 12 Conference announces preseason men’s basketball awards

Sports

October 12th, 2022 by admin

The Big 12 has announced its 2022-23 men’s basketball preseason awards and team as voted by the league’s head coaches. Mike Miles Jr. is TCU’s first selection as Preseason Player of the Year. Grant Sherfield picked up Oklahoma’s seventh Preseason Newcomer of the Year, and first since 2012-13. Keyonte George is the second consecutive Baylor player named Preseason Freshman of the Year.

Miles was joined on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team by Baylor’s Adam Flagler, Kansas’ Jalen Wilson, Oklahoma State’s Avery Anderson III and the Texas duo of Timmy Allen and Marcus Carr. Flagler, Wilson and Miles were unanimous selections. A tie in the voting created an extra position. All six were named to All-Big 12 Teams last season as Flagler, Miles and Allen were second team selections while Wilson, Anderson and Carr were on the third team.

While starting all 31 games he played in, Miles was the only player in the Big 12 to finish the 2021-22 season in the top six in points (15.2) and assists (3.8), ranking fifth and sixth, respectively. He led TCU in scoring in 18 of the 31 games, scored in double figures in 16 games and recorded 20 or more points eight times. The junior guard was named to the 2022 All-Big 12 Tournament Team, the first Horned Frog in 25 seasons to be named to a conference all-tournament team. In addition to his All-Big 12 Second Team accolade, Miles was named to the NABC All-District 8 Second Team and to the USBWA All-Region VII Team. He won a gold medal while representing the USA at the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup, playing under his college coach, Jamie Dixon.

Sherfield spent the past two seasons at Nevada where he was a two-time USBWA All-District VIII Team selection and reached the 1,000 career points milestone. Last season he led the Wolfpack in points (19.1) and assists (6.39) while also pulling down 4.2 rebounds a game. His 6.39 assists led the Mountain West and was fourth nationally. The senior guard was named to the All-Mountain West First Team as a sophomore and the third team as a junior.

A five-star guard out of IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, George was the No. 3-ranked player in the 2022 class by ESPN, making him the highest-ranked recruit in Baylor program history. He is the Bears’ fifth McDonalds All-American and averaged 17.8 points last season while shooting .410 from 3-point range. George was named MVP of the 2021 3×3 U18 World Cup while playing for USA Basketball. This past summer he averaged 22.8 points to lead Baylor to the GLOBL JAM championship game.

Iowa State’s Matt Campbell talks struggling offense and previews Texas

Sports

October 12th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa State coach Matt Campbell says dramatic changes are not going to help the Iowa State offense. The Cyclones rank last in the Big 12 in scoring, rushing and total offense heading into Saturday’s game at Texas.

Campbell says it is a lack of consistency and not a lack of talent.

Campbell is confident the offense will make progress.

The Cyclones visit a Texas team that is making strides under second year coach Steve Sarkisian. The Longhorns are coming off a 49-0 win over Oklahoma.

Campbell says the Longhorns are better on both sides of the ball.

That’s ISU coach Bill Fennelly. Ashley Joens took advantage of the extra year and was voted the league’s preseason player of the year.

The Cyclones open November seventh against Cleveland State.

Learn to Hunt program opens registration for women’s upland bird hunting workshop and mentored hunt

Ag/Outdoor, Sports

October 11th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES – The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is offering a comprehensive program to teach skills needed to hunt upland game. This program is geared towards women 18 years of age and older who have had little to no upland bird hunting experience. The workshop is also an excellent opportunity for women looking to return to the field and build a network of female upland hunters.

The program includes a classroom portion and a field portion. The classroom portion is scheduled for Nov. 18, from 6-8 p.m., at the Olofson Shooting Range, in Polk City. Participants will learn about the proper equipment, places to hunt, safe shooting practices, and how to field dress, butcher and cook pheasants. The event also includes mentored hunts on Nov. 19 and Dec. 10, at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, near Prairie City. “For women interested in the challenge of upland hunting as a means of sourcing their own protein, this program provides the opportunity to learn the skills and knowledge it takes to do it all yourself,” said Jamie Cook, program coordinator with the Iowa DNR.

The cost for the program is $45. Participants will receive a hat, vest and a Pheasants Forever membership provided by the Northern Polk Pheasants Forever Chapter. Space is limited so early registration is encouraged. For more information and to begin the registration process, go to http://events.constantcontact.com/register/event?llr=dep4qyuab&oeidk=a07ej9evnm1668f8d0b

The program is provided through a partnership with the Iowa DNR and Pheasants Forever. It is part of a national effort to recruit, retain and reactivate hunters due to the overall decline in hunting and outdoor recreation.
