Iowa Republican Senator Joni Ernst, a native of Red Oak, will serve as the Grand Marshall of the Red Oak Junction Days Parade this Saturday. The parade will begin at 10:30-a.m.
Later in the day, Senator Ernst will be speaking at the dedication of the Cedar County Freedom Rock in Cedar County as part of her 99 County Tour for 2019.
Both events are open to the public.
Four Glenwood residents were arrested on separate charges over the past four days, in Glenwood. The Glenwood P-D reports 52-year old Sherry Harvey was arrested Saturday for Public Intoxication/2nd offense. And, 32-year old Ryan Miller was arrested Saturday for OWI/1st offense.
On Friday, Glenwood Police arrested 29-year old Thomas Cash for Driving While Barred, and 27-year old Samantha Teegarden was arrested for Driving While Revoked.
Each of those individuals have since posted a cash or surety bond, and were released.
AMES, Iowa – Produce growers who want to get their water tested can do so for free, thanks to an effort by the Produce Safety Team at Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, which is providing five drop-off dates and locations across the state. The first local date is Tuesday, June 25th from 4-until 6-p.m., in Atlantic. Another local pickup is scheduled for July 23rd, in Atlantic.
Cups are available for pickup locally at the Cass County Extension Office, 805 West 10th Street in Atlantic, from 8-a.m. to 4:30-p.m., Monday-Friday. Drop them off at the Atlantic Farmers Market in the Orcheln Farm & Home parking lot from 4-until 6-p.m., on Tuesday, June 25th. Rural growers can get a head start on knowing what’s in their water, before regulations take effect. Some producers are required to have their water tested, depending on the size of operation and the source of water, in order to comply with the federal Food Safety Modernization Act. Others may wish to test their water as a precaution, in case there are any issues.
Since testing is limited in rural areas, Iowa State Extension and Outreach is sending test cups to county extension offices and farmers markets across the state. Producers should use one cup per water source, and can submit multiple cups if they have multiple water sources.
Producers must follow all collection directions, being sure to mark the time on each sterile cup, and delivering the cup to the drop-off location within three hours. Members of the On-Farm Produce Safety Team will receive the samples at the drop-off locations and return them to the ISU lab in Ames. Testing and results will be completed in about a week’s time.
Dan Fillius, food safety educator with ISU Extension and Outreach, says “This is important for rural growers because water testing is going to be required by the FSMA, and there are very few labs in the state that are performing the required test.” Fillius said FDA has pushed back the compliance dates to 2022 and beyond, depending on the size and classification of each producer. However, he said testing makes sense now, so growers can be prepared and take appropriate actions to improve their water quality, if necessary.
Growers who use public and municipal water do not need to do this test. Growers do not need to belong to a farmer’s market to drop off samples, and growers from any county are welcome to use the service. The three-hour delivery of collected samples is critical. Additional, detailed information will be provided to growers when thy pick up the cups at the Extension Office.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Defending national champion Baylor will host Georgia on Dec. 4 as part of the Big 12/SEC Challenge women’s basketball event. The Southeastern Conference and Big 12 released the pairings for the event on Monday. Texas Tech hosts Mississippi in the other Dec. 4 Big 12/SEC Challenge game. Iowa State visits Alabama on Dec. 5.
The Dec. 7 schedule includes Kansas State at Arkansas, LSU at Oklahoma, Oklahoma State at Texas A&M and Auburn at TCU. Florida visits Kansas, Tennessee hosts Texas and Mississippi State hosts West Virginia on Dec. 8.
Game times will be announced later. This event has been held since 2014. The two conferences have split the 10 matchups each of the last two seasons.
The Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce hopes you’ll lend a hand and help make the City RAGBRAI ready, beginning 9-a.m. Saturday, July 6th. Starting at the Atlantic City Park, individuals will walk the route through town picking up trash, spraying and pulling weeds, sweeping off road shoulders, etc.

RAGBRAI (The Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa), begins Sunday, July 21st in Council Bluffs. The riders and their entourage will stay overnight in Atlantic before departing the next day on their way to Winterset.
Cass County Democratic Party Chair Sherry Toelle said Monday, Democrat Senior Senator and Presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar from Minnesota will be at The Venue (307 Walnut in Atlantic) on Monday, July 1, from noon until 1-p.m., for a Cass County Meet & Greet.

The Cass County Democratic Party will provide a lunch for $10, starting at 11-a.m. that day. Proceeds go to the county party.
Senator Klobuchar is serving her third term in the US Senate after having served as the Hennepin County Attorney for seven years. Her primary policy issues include infrastructure, dealing with the opioid crisis, health and mental health issues, dealing with the climate change crisis, and making America a stronger democracy.
As of June 24th, Klobuchar was among a field of 25 Democrats who have either entered the 2020 for President, or who have formed a presidential exploratory committee.
Sheriff’s Deputies in Page County, Monday, arrested 46-year old Kyle Lee Woldruff. The rural Clarinda man was taken into custody at the Page County Courthouse, on a Page County Warrant for Failure to appear.
He was transported to the Page County Jail and held on a $100 cash bond.
GEORGE HENRY STEENHUSEN, 85, of Irwin, died Monday, June 24th, at the Elm Crest Retirement Community. Funeral services for GEORGE STEENHUSEN will be held 11-a.m. Friday, June 28th, at the Church of Christ in Irwin. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Harlan has the arrangements.
Visitation at the funeral home is from 3-until 8-p.m. Thursday, June 27th, where the family will greet friends from 6-until 8-p.m., and a Prayer service will take place at 7-p.m.
Burial is in the Oak Hill Cemetery at Irwin.

JAMES A. HEITHOFF, 68, of Audubon, died Sunday, June 23rd, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. A Mass of Christian Burial for JAMES HEITHOFF will be held 10:30-a.m. Saturday, June 29th, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Audubon. Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon has the arrangements.
Friends may call at the funeral home, where the family visitation begins 5-p.m. Friday, June 28th.

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said Monday, that the use of seat belts and airbag deployment prevent serious injuries during a collision Sunday evening, south of Stanton. Authorities were notified at around 5:25-p.m. about a two-vehicle accident near 240th Street and O Avenue.
When Deputies arrived, they determined a 2005 Jeep Liberty driven by a juvenile female, was turning around on the road on the backside of a hill near the intersection. A northbound 1998 Chevy Monte Carlo driven by 96-year old Alice Erickson, of Essex, crested the hill and struck the SUV.
Erickson and a female passenger in her vehicle, suffered minor injuries, and were transported to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital by private vehicle. Damage from the collision amounted to $8,000. Deputies were assisted at the scene by Stanton Fire and Rescue along with Red Oak Fire and Rescue.
