SALINA, Kan. (AP) — An Iowa airplane maintenance company is planning to open a facility in Salina, bringing 50 new jobs this year and up to 450 employees within three years. Officials with 1 Vision Aviation, a Sioux City, Iowa-based company, said the company does maintenance and repairs on commercial, corporate, private planes and performs other general aviation maintenance work.

The Salina Journal reports the Salina Airport Authority board on June 20 approved financing for $2.6 million in repairs and improvements to an airport hangar to house 1 Vision Aviation.
Another company, LifeSave Transport of Wichita, has rented a hangar at the airport to provide emergency medical transportation services to Salina and north-central Kansas. LifeSave will base 16 pilots, paramedics and flight nurses in Salina, and operations may begin as early as July 15.

State audit says county official took money for fake intern

News

June 26th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

MOUNT PLEASANT, Iowa (AP) — A state audit says a Henry County employee who faked having an intern collected nearly $219,000 in improper payments. The Des Moines Register reports that the audit report says 43-year-old Jodi Sutter was fired in February 2018 as Henry County’s environmental specialist after she was unable to produce documentation for expenses and admitted lying about having an intern for whom she sought reimbursements. Sutter has sued the county for wrongful termination and unpaid wages.

Sutter said Tuesday in a statement released by her attorney that she’d “discovered substantial gaps in the (audit) report, which call into question its findings.” The audit report says the county’s board of health didn’t review Sutter’s claims for reimbursement and wages, erroneously believing that county supervisors were handling the oversight.

(Radio Iowa) — The Iowa Farm Bureau is hosting an economic summit on Friday in Des Moines under the heading, “Managing Through Challenging Times.” Iowa Farm Bureau president Craig Hill says it’s been a tough couple of years for farmers and ranchers and this event will offer them help on several fronts. “We’ll bring in some experts and folks that have knowledge and wisdom about forecasting and what’s going to be happening in the future,” Hill says. “We’ll deal with macroeconomic issues as well as farm lending and what farmers’ balance sheets and current positions look like as well as going forward with trade.”

Hill says summit attendees will be able to learn more about how the Farm Bill is being implemented. “The Farm Service Agency director from Washington D.C. will be joining us to give us some insight there,” Hill says. “There’s just a whole host of people that have knowledge and beyond, talking about technology, too, and how we manage in a changing world, in a challenging world, with technology.”

A delegation of Iowa farmers recently visited one of the countries at the center of trade disputes with the Trump Administration. Hill says, “We had a market study tour to China and the insight they gained and the experiences they had while traveling in China and learning about their agriculture and their needs going forward and the trade discussion is going to be very interesting to hear.”

He says it’s also a chance to share information about new revenue opportunities stemming from hemp, crop insurance, and blockchain technology. Registrations for the summit are still being accepted at the website: www.iowafarmbureau.com.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Kumar Rocker limited Michigan to three hits and struck out 11 in 6 1/3 innings and Vanderbilt capitalized against the Wolverines’ shaky bullpen in a 4-1 win in Game 2 of the College World Series finals. The Commodores forced a winner-take-all Game 3 on Wednesday night. The Commodores picked up an unearned run in the fifth inning and Jack Weisenberger let in two runs on wild pitches on back-to-back batters.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Chad Pinder and Marcus Semien homered in a six-run fifth inning, and the Oakland Athletics rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-3. Matt Olson also went deep to help Oakland win for the sixth time in eight games. Tha A’s, who had totaled nine runs over their last three games, overcame a 3-1 deficit with the big fifth inning to knock out Cardinals starter Jack FLaherty.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Hunter Dozier’s grand slam highlighted Kansas City’s five-run rally in the ninth off Cleveland closer Brad Hand, giving the Royals an 8-6 win over the Indians. Hand was a perfect 22 for 22 in save chances and likely on his way to being an All-Star, but did not record an out against the Royals. Nicky Lopez had an RBI infield single before Kansas City loaded the bases and Dozier connected on Hand’s first pitch for his first career grand slam.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Hard-throwing closer Jordan Hicks is set to undergo Tommy John surgery on Wednesday. Hicks was 2-2 with a 3.14 ERA in 29 games this season for the Cardinals. He had 14 saves in 15 opportunities.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs says right-handed closer Craig Kimbrel could be activated later this week. Kimbrel signed a three-year, $43 million contract on June 7. He is set to pitch in another game at Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday. Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said Monday the team will evaluate his progress.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals closer Jordan Hicks has a torn elbow ligament and the team says it’s determining what to do with the hardest-throwing pitcher in the majors. The Cardinals say the right-hander has a torn ulnar collateral ligament, an injury that usually leads to Tommy John surgery. Hicks has hit 105 mph with fastballs this season and routinely reaches triple digits with his heater.
