Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Kumar Rocker limited Michigan to three hits and struck out 11 in 6 1/3 innings and Vanderbilt capitalized against the Wolverines’ shaky bullpen in a 4-1 win in Game 2 of the College World Series finals. The Commodores forced a winner-take-all Game 3 on Wednesday night. The Commodores picked up an unearned run in the fifth inning and Jack Weisenberger let in two runs on wild pitches on back-to-back batters.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Chad Pinder and Marcus Semien homered in a six-run fifth inning, and the Oakland Athletics rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-3. Matt Olson also went deep to help Oakland win for the sixth time in eight games. Tha A’s, who had totaled nine runs over their last three games, overcame a 3-1 deficit with the big fifth inning to knock out Cardinals starter Jack FLaherty.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Hunter Dozier’s grand slam highlighted Kansas City’s five-run rally in the ninth off Cleveland closer Brad Hand, giving the Royals an 8-6 win over the Indians. Hand was a perfect 22 for 22 in save chances and likely on his way to being an All-Star, but did not record an out against the Royals. Nicky Lopez had an RBI infield single before Kansas City loaded the bases and Dozier connected on Hand’s first pitch for his first career grand slam.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Hard-throwing closer Jordan Hicks is set to undergo Tommy John surgery on Wednesday. Hicks was 2-2 with a 3.14 ERA in 29 games this season for the Cardinals. He had 14 saves in 15 opportunities.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs says right-handed closer Craig Kimbrel could be activated later this week. Kimbrel signed a three-year, $43 million contract on June 7. He is set to pitch in another game at Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday. Cubs president of baseball operations Theo Epstein said Monday the team will evaluate his progress.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals closer Jordan Hicks has a torn elbow ligament and the team says it’s determining what to do with the hardest-throwing pitcher in the majors. The Cardinals say the right-hander has a torn ulnar collateral ligament, an injury that usually leads to Tommy John surgery. Hicks has hit 105 mph with fastballs this season and routinely reaches triple digits with his heater.

Riverside PPEL & Income Surtax fails

News

June 25th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

For the second time in about two-months, voters in the Riverside School District failed, Tuesday, to pass a 10-year Physical Plant and Equipment Levy and a PPEL surtax. According to unofficial results from the Pottawattamie County Auditor’s Office, the measure, which required a 50 plus 1 simple majority to pass, received 438 NO votes and 405 Yes votes, or 52% to 48%. 843 of the 2,783 registered voters cast their ballots, for a voter turnout of 30%. The majority of the No votes came from Oakland, where 229 voters said they were opposed to the measure, and 216 said yes. (See the breakdown below)

The Public Measure had essentially asked if the District would be permitted to impose the levy for 10-years, at a tax rate not to exceed $1.34 per $1,000 taxable valuation, beginning with the levy of property taxes for collection in the Fiscal Year ending June 30, 2021, and a not to exceed 2% income surtax effective December 31st, 2020. The first proposal presented to District patrons was defeated April 2nd , with 56.4% opposed and 43.6% in favor.

School officials say if it had been approved, the PPEL would generate an estimated $3.7 million over the 10-year period for capital improvement projects, such as the aging HVAC system at the Elementary and Intermediate schools. Revenue raised from the surtax would have been used to pay down the property tax levy to an estimated $1.29 per $1,000 of valuation.

Unofficial results:

Absentee: Yes 95, No 51

Carson: Yes 103, No 80

Macedonia: 42 Yes, 78 No

Oakland: 216 Yes, 229 No.
