Iowa visits No. 2 Ohio State

Sports

October 22nd, 2022 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Hawkeyes are on the road today (Saturday), visiting Ohio State. Kick-off is at 11-a.m., with the pre-game on KJAN beginning at 9-a.m.  Iowa is a better than four touchdown underdog at second ranked Ohio State. Iowa’s abysmal offense needs to find a way to stay on the field and generate points to help the defense.

The defense has a challenge against an Ohio State defense that is one of the best in the country.

With Iowa’s lack of talent on offense it has been impossible to put a scout team together in practice that looks like the Ohio State offense.

Ferentz says the players know they are a significant underdog.

Big plays lift CAM over Baxter

Sports

October 22nd, 2022 by admin

The CAM Cougars hit on enough big plays to outlast the Baxter Bolts 58-38 on Friday night in the first round of the 8-Player playoffs. The Cougars hit on long touchdown passes at the end of the first half and beginning of the second half to swing the game in their favor.

Baxter scored on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Cody Damman to Cael Shepley with just 24 seconds left in the first half to take a 30-18 lead. It seemed like a deflating moment for the Cougars but they let it fly when they got the ball back. Chase Spieker hooked up with Jack Follmann down the seem for 61-yards and touchdown with just 11 seconds left in he half. Austin Williams added the 2-point conversion and CAM was back within 4 at 30-26 at the break.

The Cougars got the ball to start the second half and hit another bomb on the first play of the half. Spieker connected with Sam Foreman down the right sideline for 65-yards and a score to give the Cougars their first lead of the night, 34-30 after the conversion. Baxter responded well with a 19-play drive that took nearly eight minutes off the game clock, capping it off with a 15 yard touchdown run from Cody Damman. They converted the two-point try and went up 38-34. CAM shut the Bolts out the rest of the way. Sam Foreman started to get consistent pressure in the Bolts’ backfield and the tide turned to the Cougars. Follmann ripped off a 67-yard rushing score to put the Cougars back in front for good on the second play of the fourth quarter. Follmann added another rushing score and Sam Foreman hauled in a touchdown pass with 1:21 left to put a bow on a hard-fought win.

Jack Follmann had a monster game with 113 yards and 4 rushing touchdowns to go along with 98 yards receiving and another score. Chase Spieker had an efficient night at quarterback going 12-16 for 296 yards and three touchdowns. Sam Foreman had 177 receiving yards and two touchdowns. The Cougars improved to 7-2 on the season and will now await their 2nd round match-up.

Baxter was led by 32-48 passing for 350 yards and three touchdowns from Cody Damman. He also racked up 133 yards and 1 touchdown on the ground. He spent some time out of the game after taking multiple big hits in the third quarter but did come back in later in a gutty effort. The Bolts end their season at 7-2.

All signs point to an excellent pheasant hunting season ahead

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

October 21st, 2022 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa hunters will be searching the countryside for pheasants starting next weekend. Nate Carr, a D-N-R conservation officer in Hamilton and Hardin counties, says all factors point to a good season ahead. “Coming off some of our August roadside surveys, this year we’re expecting a very similar outcome to last year,” Carr says. “Last year, we had a good number of hunters participating, about 63,000, killing an estimated 370,000 birds, which is the highest we’ve seen in probably the past 10 years.” Carr offers a few reminders for Iowa’s pheasant hunters, be they new to the sport or seasoned veterans.

“Of course, you need your hunting license and habitat fee,” Carr says. “Shooting hours start at 8 AM and end at 4:30 PM, a little bit earlier than some of your typical hunting seasons, so remember to shut that off at 4:30. The daily limit is going to be three pheasants.” A hunter’s attire is also important, not only to keep them warm but to keep them safe. “Hunters are required to wear at least one article of external clothing that has at least 50% of solid blaze orange,” Carr says. “Whether it’s a hat, vest, jacket, something along those lines, make sure at least 50% is solid blaze orange so that other hunters can see you.” Another rule for hunters is to make sure you get permission from property owners to go on private land. The season runs October 29th through January 10th.

Iowa women’s basketball Media Day

Sports

October 21st, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa women’s basketball coach Lisa Bluder is embracing the high expectations. All five starters return from last season’s team that won the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles. They enter this season ranked fourth in the AP Poll.

Bluder wants her team to enjoy the expectations and not feel added pressure.

Among those returning is the nation’s top point guard in junior Caitlin Clark.

Despite all of the success last season had a crushing ending when the Hawkeyes were stunned by Creighton in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Winless Drake set to host Davidson

Sports

October 21st, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Drake football coach Todd Stepsis says the Bulldogs need to find a way to close out games. Drake is 0-7 overall and their four Pioneer Football League losses have been decided in the fourth quarter.

The Bulldogs host defending Pioneer Football League champ Davidson on Saturday. The Wildcats triple-option offense is averaging just under 400 yards of rushing per game.

Stepsis says preparing to defend the option does not begin during game week.
