The Riverside Lady Dawgs fought past the Stanton Viqueens 3-2 on Monday night in a Class 1A Region 1 Semifinals match. Riverside won the tight match 25-19, 20-25, 27-25, 22-25, 16-14.

The night was full of momentum swings in front of a packed house. Each team traded control of the first two sets and the third was back and forth. A late five point rally got Riverside the lead and they scored four of the last five points to close it out. Stanton built a big lead in the fourth before seeing Riverside rally all the way back to momentarily lead 20-19. Stanton regrouped and scored 6 of the last 8 to tie the match up at two sets each. The fifth was nip and tuck again. Each team had multiple leads. The Viqueens had a match-point chance at 14-13 but Riverside got a big kill from Veronica Andrusyshyn to keep it alive. The Lady Dawgs then scored the last two to take the match. The last point came at the end of a long rally when Mack Olmstead-Mitchell ripped a shot through the block attempt of two Viqueen defenders to win it. Olmstead-Mitchell described the play.

Riverside Coach Brooke Flathers said they just continued to talk about taking it point-by-point in tough moments and they were ready.

It was a great atmosphere for volleyball and Olmstead-Mitchell said it was awesome to have the support of a big crowd.

Coach Flathers said the message during their last timeout when they were down 14-13 was to just believe.

Riverside will try to carry the momentum forward when they face LeMars Gehlen Catholic in the 1A Region 1 Final on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. That match is scheduled to be played in Denison.

Riverside Stats:

Ayla Richardson – 36 assists, 5 kills, 13 digs, 1 block

Iowa’s Caitlin Clark previews the new season

Sports

October 24th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa All-American point guard Caitlin Clark says the Hawkeyes are embracing high expectations as they get ready for a new season. All five starters return from last year’s team that won the Big Ten regular season and tournament titles. The Hawkeyes enter the season ranked fourth in the AP Poll.

The defense was improved last year and Clark says that needs to continue.

Clark says the Hawkeyes also have quality depth and that has made practice competitive.

Iowa crushed at No. 2 Ohio State

Sports

October 24th, 2022 by Ric Hanson

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz has never made a staff change during a season and he is not starting now. The Hawkeye offense has gone from bad to worse to comical in a 54-10 loss at second ranked Ohio State. Iowa committed six turnovers against the Buckeyes and the lone touchdown was a scoop and score by defensive end Joe Evans that gave the Hawks an early 7-3 advantage. It was the third time this season the defense outscored the offense and afterwards Ferentz was questioned why his son, Brian, remains the offensive coordinator.

Ferentz was willing to change quarterbacks. Alex Padilla relieved Spencer Petras in the second half and fumbled on his first play and threw an interception on his third play inside the Iowa 20.

Iowa is 3-4 and Ferentz remains convinced the offense will get better.

Iowa hosts Northwestern Saturday.

Hardman’s big day leads Chiefs over 49ers

Sports

October 23rd, 2022 by admin

Mecole Hardman ran for two scores and caught another touchdown as the Kansas City Chiefs raced past the San Francisco 49ers 44-23 on Sunday.

After falling behind by 10 points midway through the first quarter, the Chiefs rallied to score 6 touchdowns on their next seven possessions. The Chiefs were ahead by one at half and then struck quickly in the second half. Isiah Pacheco had a great return and three plays later Clyde Edwards-Helaire scored on a 16-yard run. The Chiefs seemed to roll from there.

Patrick Mahoms went 25-34 passing for 423 yard and three touchdowns. JuJu Smith-Schuster had seven catches for 124 yards and a touchdonwn. Travis Kelce finished just two yards shy of 100, keeping him one game away from tying Rob Gronkoswki for the most 100-yard receiving games by a tight end.

The Chiefs improved to 5-2 on the season and we’ll now enjoy a little rest with their bye week. Their next game will be at home on November 6th against the Tennessee Titans.
