Police provide details about how suspect in killings of two cops was taken into custody

News

November 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Des Moines Police say the suspect in the early morning slaying of two central Iowa policemen was walking on a rural road and flagged down a passing state employee to turn himself in. The suspect is Scott Michael Greene, a 46-year-old from the Des Moines suburb of Urbandale. Urbandale is where the first shooting happened at about 1 a.m. A Des Moines policeman was shot a few minutes later as he was responding to the report of shots fired.

A spokesman for Des Moines police says Greene approached a Department of Natural Resources officer on a gravel road near Interstate 80, about halfway between Stuart and Earlham, showed the officer his I-D and asked the officer to call 9-1-1. Dallas County deputies and Iowa State Patrol officers raced to the scene. Greene peacefully surrendered at about 9 a.m.

Greene complained of a “flare up” of a previous medical condition, according to Des Moines police, and he was taken to a Des Moines hospital “as a precaution.” “He’ll be interviewed once he’s well enough to make a statement,” according to a spokesman for Des Moines Police.

Suspect in slaying of cops has history of run-ins with police

News

November 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

Police in the Des Moines suburb of Urbandale have had several encounters with the man in custody for killing two policemen early this (Wednesday) morning, but Urbandale Police Chief Ross McCarty says there was no indication that Scott Michael Greene might resort to such violence. The 46-year-old Greene is accused of first gunning down Urbandale Officer Justin Martin, who was shot in his patrol vehicle around 1 a.m.

“Our officer took fire from the side of his vehicle,” McCarty said. “We can’t tell you how many rounds he took through his vehicle, but I’m pretty sure it’s over 15 and under 30.” Moments later, about two miles away, Greene allegedly shot and killed Des Moines Police Sergeant Anthony Beminio, who was also in a patrol car.

Investigators have said there was likely nothing the officers could have done to prevent the attacks. Greene was taken into custody at around 9 a.m. in rural Dallas County, where he flagged down a state DNR worker and asked him to call 911. McCarty said Greene appeared in court Tuesday afternoon, but it’s not clear if THAT played a role in shootings.

“I’m not sure…his mother and him had a disagreement over something and I don’t know if it was a civil case or if it was criminal,” McCarty said. Prior to Greene’s arrest, Urbandale Schools canceled classes for the day on McCarty’s suggestion. McCarty said Greene made “indirect” threats to the school district.

“There’s been some issues with the Urbandale School system lately and we’ve issued trespass warrants to Mr. Greene,” McCarty said. “The school system was in the process of working out what those would be, being he also has a daughter who’s a student in the school. So, they were setting the perimeters and working through that.”

In mid-October, Greene posted a video to YouTube which documents his removal from an Urbandale High School football game. McCarty said, as of this (Wednesday) morning, he had not seen the video but he was familiar with the incident. “I understand he had a Confederate flag and he was waving it during the national anthem. He had picked some people of color to wave it in front of,” McCarty said. “Although they didn’t complain to us, there was people in the crowd who felt it was offensive and he should be removed from the stadium.” Greene began recording the video outside the stadium after police officers escorted him out.

“He said he was invoking his First Amendment rights and that we were trampling on them,” McCarty said. “Officers told him that he was on private property and the people in charge of that property did not want him there. He left the school grounds, but used the public sidewalks to continue his demonstration.”

Police have said they believe Greene is the sole suspect in the murders of the two officers.

The latest on IA Officer shootings: Both graduated from Simpson College

News

November 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

An Iowa college says two Des Moines-area police officers who were ambushed and killed were both graduates of its criminal justice program. Simpson College President Jay Simmons says the deaths of Des Moines Sgt. Anthony Beminio and Urbandale officer Justin Martin are tragic and the loss is “almost too much to bear.”

Police say a white man with a history of racial provocations and confrontations with police killed the two officers in separate incidents early Wednesday. Beminio graduated from Simpson College in Indianola in 2001 and played football.

Martin graduated last year. Professor Fred Jones remembers him as a “kind, gentle, compassionate man” who went into police work because he wanted to serve the public. Martin had interned at the Urbandale Police Department during his senior year.

Simpson’s wrestling team will wear blue socks to honor the officers at its meet Thursday.

Iowa Insurance Division Hosts “Iowa Fraud Fighters” Lunch and Learn in Creston

News

November 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

CRESTON, IA – The Iowa Insurance Division (IID) announced today (Wednesday), it will host an Iowa Fraud Fighters lunch and learn public education program on Nov. 17 at the Supertel Inn and Conference Center, 800 Laurel Street in Creston. The program will educate and empower Iowans to combat and report investment and insurance fraud. The lunch and learn series is a new initiative of IID’s statewide “Iowa Fraud Fighters – Shield Your Savings” public education program.

“Over the last three years, we’ve held 18 Iowa Fraud Fighters forums throughout Iowa,” said Iowa Insurance Commissioner Nick Gerhart. “This lunch and learn series brings our important fraud-prevention message to more Iowa communities.”

According to Gerhart, con artists are targeting Americans age 60 and older, swindling more than 7 million Americans out of almost $3 billion each year.  Unfortunately, many smart Iowans have fallen victim to these very slick and sophisticated investment scammers, and some have lost their entire life savings.

“Our goal in holding a Creston lunch and learn program is to help educate Iowans on common scams and arm them with tools and tips to prevent and report fraud,” said Craig Goettsch, IID director of investment education and community outreach, as well as a Creston program presenter and panelist. “Whenever there is a possibility to make changes – such as open enrollment for both Medicare and the ACA plans, it is prime time for scammers to call and misrepresent themselves as a government agency, ask for personal information or account numbers, and try to steal your identity. Medicare will never call you and ask you for personal information, such as your Medicare number, which most likely is your Social Security number.”Registration for the lunch and learn begins at 11:30 a.m., lunch is served at noon and the program concludes at 1:30 p.m. Informational booths staffed by the Iowa Insurance Division and Iowa Attorney General’s office will be open prior to the lunch for attendees to pick up important materials on how to prevent and report fraud, as well as Medicare-related materials from the Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), which is a part of the Iowa Insurance Division.

To RSVP for the complimentary lunch and learn program, call toll-free at 866-559-7114, or fill out the online form at www.IowaFraudFighters.gov  by Nov. 10. This free event is limited to the first 100 respondents and is funded partly from fines and settlements collected from scammers. Caretakers of senior parents and grandparents are also encouraged to attend the forum and learn more.

Got him! Suspect in 2 fatal Des Moines area Police Officer shootings is in custody

News

November 2nd, 2016 by Ric Hanson

(Updated 9:43-a.m. A-P/Radio Iowa) – Police say the suspect in the killings of two Des Moines area police officers is in custody. Des Moines police Sgt. Paul Parizek says 46-year old Scott Michael Greene was taken into custody without incident at around 9-a.m. by the Iowa State Patrol Wednesday morning, in Dallas County.

Greene is suspected in the killing of a Des Moines police officer and an Urbandale police officer earlier Wednesday. The two officers were killed in ambush-style attacks while they were sitting in their patrol cars.

Iowa court records show Greene, of Urbandale, was jailed and charged with interference with official acts after resisting Urbandale police officers trying to pat him down for a weapon on April 10, 2014. A complaint signed by an Urbandale officer says Greene resisted verbal commands, was hostile and combative. It says he was known to be armed. He entered a guilty plea and was fined.

Two days later Urbandale police were called to answer a complaint of harassment at the apartment complex where Greene lived. The complaint says he threatened to kill another man during a confrontation in the parking lot. He was charged with harassment, pleaded guilty and received a suspended jail sentence and a year of probation. Records show he completed a court-ordered substance abuse and psychological evaluation.

A video posted on YouTube may provide some clues in the case of this morning’s fatal shootings of two Des Moines area police officers. The video posted by Scott Greene in mid-October details an incident at a high school football game. In the video, Greene says he was waving a Confederate flag at the game when he was “mugged” and the flag was taken away. Greene began recording the video outside the Urbandale High stadium after police officers escorted him out.

Greene is heard conversing with two police officers outside of the stadium.

In the ten-minute video, Greene later had this exchange with a female officer. Greene said he wanted to file an assault report.

Greene was given the flag but refused to leave the area and an officer is heard addressing him, by name. Officers threatened to charge Greene with trespassing if he wouldn’t leave but Greene maintained he wanted assault charges filed against someone in the crowd and insisted he wasn’t causing a disturbance.

The first of this morning’s two shootings took place at the very corner where the video was shot, outside the stadium.
