The AHSTW Vikings (9-0) will have to get past the Southwest Valley Timberwolves (7-2) for the second time this season if they want to advance in the Class A Playoffs. The Vikings host the Timberwolves for the second round game on Friday and we’ll have coverage on KJAN.
The Vikings won the first meeting back in week three of the season 28-0. They were led by 7 of 10 passing for 147 yards and a score by Kyle Sternberg and 93 yards on the ground with 2 touchdowns by Luke Sternberg. AHSTW head coach GG Harris said they know the type of hard nosed game they will get from the Timberwolves.
Southwest Valley picked up a big win on the road in the opening round over Madrid. Timberwolves head coach Anthony Donahoo is very proud of the communication and cohesiveness of his team late this season.
The Sternberg boys have combined for 3,569 yards of offense and 51 touchdowns this season for the Vikings. Coach Harris said the chemistry between those two stems from the entire team helping each other.
Coach Donahoo said he has a lot of respect for the Vikings and their style of play.
The Vikings and Timberwolves will kickoff at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night in Avoca. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call on AM 1220, FM 101.1, and online at KJAN.com. Our night starts with our final pick ’em show of the year Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00 p.m. followed by pregame at 6:30 p.m.
Iowa State quarterback Hunter Dekkers says he used the bye week to get some rest. The Cyclones are 3-4 overall and return to action at home on Saturday against Oklahoma.
Despite an 0-4 Big 12 record Dekkers remains confident in what the Cyclones can still accomplish.
The Cyclones need to win three of their last five games to go bowling for a sixth straight year.
Iowa State’s offense found success at Texas with an up tempo style and Dekkers says there could be more of it.
Iowa linebacker Jack Campbell says he is focused on what is ahead. Losers of three straight, the Hawkeyes take a 3-4 record into Saturday’s game at home against Northwestern.
While frustrated with the results Campbell is still looking forward to the remainder of the season.
Iowa’s worst in the nation offense has repeatedly put the defense in a tough spot but Campbell says there has been no finger pointing on the team.
Campbell says it is not one phase that is getting the Hawkeyes beat.
The Riverside Lady Dawgs won a 3-1 match over Gehlen Catholic in Denison on Wednesday night to advance to the state volleyball tournament for the first time in school history. Riverside won 25-19, 25-23, 14-25, 25-18.
The Bulldogs jumped out to a great start by controlling the action in the first set. Riverside’s Sophia Taylor said their preparation set them up for that kind of early success.
The second set was a bit more wild. Gehlen Catholic ripped off a 10-point rally midway through to lead 18-10. Riverside didn’t hang their heads and started chipping away at that lead. A five-point and 4-point run brought them all the way back to the lead at 23-22. Gehlen tied it at 23 but the Bulldogs scored the next two to complete the set comeback. Riverside Head Coach Brooke Flathers said that was a great momentum swing.
The third was controlled by Gehlen Catholic for most of the set but it didn’t seem to phase the Lady Dawgs. Riverside scored the first two points of the fourth and then used a nine-point run to grab a strangle hold on the match building a 20-9 lead. The Jays didn’t go away easily, using a six-point run to close the gap but Riverside eventually closed it out. Veronica Andrusyshyn had a monster night with 19 kills, 2 aces, 9 digs, and 1 block. The senior was thrilled to earn the trip to state.
Riverside has showed an ability to move past mistakes and focus on the next point during this postseason run. They battled through a fifth set and match point against Stanton in the regional semis and then didn’t flinch when Gehlen had a big run in the second and won the third set in the final. Junior Elyssa Amdor said their mental approach has maybe been their biggest point of growth this season.
It’s been a road of improvement for Riverside and Coach Flathers. She was overjoyed that it has grown to this moment.
The Riverside Bulldogs drew the 8-seed for the 1A State Tournament and will play top-seeded Springville at 6:00 p.m. next Tuesday night in Coralville. We’ll have coverage on KJAN.
