RALEIGH ERNEST WOLTMANN, 95, of Avoca, died Thursday, July 25th, at Avoca Specialty Care. Funeral services for RALEIGH WOLTMANN will be held 11-a.m. Tuesday, August 6th, at the United Church of Avoca. Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Avoca has the arrangements.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Monday, August 5th, from 4-until 8-p.m., with the family greeting friends from 6-until 8-p.m.

Burial will be in the Shelby Cemetery at Shelby.

RALEIGH WOLTMANN is survived by:

His wife – Marilyn [Raasch] Woltmann, of Iowa City.

His daughters – Nancy (John) Faselt, of Iowa City, & Lois Woltmann, of Carrollton, TX.

His son – Justin Woltmann, of Avoca.

7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Felix misses out on world spot in 400, finishes 6th

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Allyson Felix finished sixth in the 400-meter final at the U.S. championships and missed out on qualifying in an individual event for worlds for the first time as a professional. Felix fell behind early and couldn’t make up ground Saturday as she returned to competition eight months after having a baby. Shakima Wimbley won in 50.21 seconds.

The 33-year-old Felix can still make the U.S. relay team for the world championships in Doha this fall. She’s made every world outdoor team, beginning in 2003.
A six-time Olympic gold medalist, Felix said her training is all geared toward the Tokyo Games next summer.

Fred Kerley upset Michael Norman for the men’s 400 title. Paralympian Blake Leeper was fifth and has a chance to make the relay squad. Leeper was born with both legs missing below the knee.

Briscoe overtakes Bell late for NASCAR Xfinity win in Iowa

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Chase Briscoe passed Christopher Bell with six laps to go and won the NASCAR Xfinity race at Iowa Speedway on Saturday night for his first victory of the year. Briscoe’s only other Xfinity victory came last season on Charlotte’s roval.

Bell led a career-high 235 out of 250 laps, but old tires allowed Briscoe to take over and clinch a playoff berth in the No. 98 Ford.

John Hunter Nemechek was third, followed by Noah Gragson and points leader Tyler Reddick. Cole Custer, who entered the race in third place, got loose and crashed into the wall with 90 laps to go.

Crop duster crashes in Marshall County – no injuries

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Office reports that at around 1:40-p.m. today (Saturday), the Marshall County Communications Center received a report of an airplane crash in the 2700-block of Parker Avenue, near Haverhill (Iowa). As deputies arrived, they located the pilot outside the aircraft, which was being used to apply agricultural chemicals. The pilot, John Yost, was not injured during the landing and the aircraft sustained minor damage to a wing during the emergency landing.

It was reported by the pilot the empty aircraft was experiencing mechanical problems as it was heading back the the airport. The pilot decided to make a controlled emergency landing in a nearby hayfield. The aircraft is owned and operated by John Yost, contracted by Meyer Ag Service to apply agricultural chemicals.

WANDA PETERSEN, 88, of Sioux Center, died Saturday, July 27th, at the Royale Meadows Health Center, in Sioux Center. Funeral services for WANDA PETERSEN will be held 10:30-a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3rd, at the Ohde Funeral Home in Kimballton.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, Aug. 2nd, from 5-until 7-p.m.; Visitation will resume Saturday, from 9:30-a.m. until the time of service, at the funeral home.

Burial will be in the Elk Horn Lutheran Cemetery at Elk Horn.

WANDA PETERSEN is survived by:

Her sons – Sheldon Petersen, of Leesburg, Virginia, & Curtis Petersen of Sioux Center.

Her daughter – Beth Brower, of Torrington, CT.

7 grandchildren & 6 great-grandchildren.

Police say shooting that injured woman was accidental

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — Police in northeastern Iowa say a Waterloo woman wounded in an accidental shooting is expected to recover. The Courier reports that the woman was taken to a hospital following the shooting Thursday night.

Police say first responders were called to a home around 10:15 p.m. Thursday and found the woman with a single gunshot wound to the torso. Officials say she underwent surgery for her injuries.

Officers say a man at the house was handling a handgun when it accidentally fired.

Christopher Bell wins Xfinity pole in Iowa

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Christopher Bell will start from the pole for today’s (Saturday’s) NASCAR Xfinity race in Iowa after finishing first in qualifying. Bell, who posted a top speed of 132.855 MPH in his No. 20 Toyota, won a pole for the fourth time this season. Bell will be seeking his sixth win of the season later today on Iowa’s short track.

Chase Briscoe will join Bell on the front row. Brandon Jones and Riley Herbst will start third and fourth, and Justin Allgaier was fifth fastest in qualifying. Series points leader Tyler Reddick will start 11th.

2019 Governor’s Charity Steer Show set for August 10

The 2019 Governor’s Charity Steer Show will mark the 37th consecutive year the beef industry has raised funds to help families who utilize the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa. This year, the show ring competition takes place Saturday, Aug. 10, at 4:00 p.m., in the Pioneer Livestock Pavilion at the Iowa State Fair. Celebrities will lead 25 steers around the ring, vying for the championship designation, showmanship honors, and the People’s Choice award. Immediately following the competition, the steers will be sold at auction with proceeds going to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa. Both the show ring event and the auction are open to the general public.

Since the Iowa Beef Industry Council and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association began the Governor’s Charity Steer Show in 1983, the effort has raised more than $3.5 million for the Des Moines, Iowa City and Sioux City Ronald McDonald House Charities. The houses provide a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children being treated in area hospitals and have served nearly 47,000 families.

Each of the 25 steers are owned by Iowa youth who have cared for the animals and participated in other shows with them. The youth prepare the animals for the show and assist a celebrity in the show ring. Sponsors reimburse the youth for the cost of the animal and choose the celebrity. Youth participating in the 2019 Governor’s Charity Steer Show will also learn additional information about the beef industry on Thursday, and volunteer some time with the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Des Moines on Friday, Aug. 9th.
