LOUIS (AP) — Kyle Hendricks struck out seven in seven innings and Ian Happ hit an RBI single in the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie as Chicago Cubs beat St. Louis 2-0 and moved into a tie with the Cardinals atop the NL Central. The teams have identical 57-50 records. The Cardinal have lost three of their last four.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Freddy Galvis and rookie Bo Bichette hit solo home runs to lead the Toronto Blue Jays over the Kansas City Royals 4-1 Wednesday for a three-game sweep. Bichette hit his first career homer to open the eighth inning against Royals starter Jakob Junis, a drive to left field.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — No team in the NFL last season made more big plays on offense than the Kansas City Chiefs. And while matching their incredible total of 52 passes of at least 25 yards seems like a longshot, there are quite a few reasons to believe the Chiefs could be even more explosive this season. It starts with quarterback Patrick Mahomes and goes from there.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Dodgers acquired infielder Jedd Gyorko and international signing bonus allocation from the St. Louis Cardinals for pitchers Tony Cingrani and Jeffrey Abreu at the trade deadline. The Cardinals will send $2,938,710 to the Dodgers to offset much of the money owed Gyorko, who is due $4,193,548 of his $13 million salary this year and is guaranteed a $1 million buyout of a $13 million club option for 2021.

MONDAMIN, Iowa (AP) — Western Iowa authorities have recovered the body of a farmer who died after his tractor flipped over atop him when it ran off a riverbank edge into the Missouri River. The tractor was spotted by people searching for the man Tuesday evening a little more than 2 miles northwest of Mondamin. The sheriff’s office identified the man as 82-year-old Malvern Wallis, who lived in Mondamin.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines woman faces felony charges after police say she beat two young children so badly that one of them jumped from second story balcony to escape her. The Des Moines Register reports that 30-year-old Rasheena Perry is charged with two felony counts of child endangerment causing bodily injury and one misdemeanor count of child endangerment after the July 11 incident. Police say Perry threw items at and hit the girls while they were in a bathtub and choked them.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — A lawyer for the ousted Iowa Department of Human Services director says he will file a legal claim alleging he was the victim of whistleblower retaliation. West Des Moines attorney Tom Duff says he is representing Jerry Foxhoven, who was asked to step down by Gov. Kim Reynolds last month. Duff said that Foxhoven plans to announce that he’s filing a wrongful termination claim with the State Appeals Board, the first step toward pursuing a lawsuit against state government

CLIVE, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Lottery has posted record results for fiscal 2019, which ended June 30. Lottery officials say in a news release that sales, prizes to players and retail commissions all set records for the year. Preliminary figures released Wednesday show the generated a record $92.8 million in proceeds to state causes for the year.

Red Oak woman arrested for assault

Red Oak Police, Wednesday afternoon, arrested 64-year old Patricia Maureen Hawkins, of Red Oak. Hawkins was taken into custody at around 3:40-p.m. for simple Domestic Abuse Assault. She was being held without bond in the Montgomery County Jail.

Des Moines police: Beating so bad, 1 child leapt off balcony

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A Des Moines woman faces felony charges after police say she beat two young children so badly that one of them jumped from second story balcony to escape her.

The Des Moines Register reports that 30-year-old Rasheena Perry is charged with two felony counts of child endangerment causing bodily injury and one misdemeanor count of child endangerment after the July 11 incident.

Police say Perry threw items at and hit the girls, both under the age of 14, while they were in a bathtub. Police say she wrapped a shower curtain around the face of one of the girls, before she escaped and jumped off the balcony. Police say they found the other girl covered in bruises, including marks on her neck where Perry had choked her. Police also say Perry left an infant alone in an apartment.

Perry’s preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 9. An attorney was not listed for her in court records Wednesday.

Cardinals deal Gyorko to Dodgers for Cingrani

ST. LOUIS, Mo., July 31, 2019 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced this afternoon that they have completed a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, acquiring left-handed pitcher Tony Cingrani and minor league right-handed pitcher Jeffry Abreu in exchange for infielder Jedd Gyorko, 2019/2020 International Cap Space and cash considerations.

Cingrani, 30, is a veteran of seven-plus seasons in the majors with Cincinnati and the Dodgers.   He is currently on the 60-day Injured List (left shoulder surgery) and has not pitched this season.   The 6-4, 215-pound Cingrani owns a 12-22 career mark with a 4.01 ERA in 164 games pitched (61 starts), winning a career-high seven games for the Reds in 2013.

Abreu, 19, is a native of the Dominican Republic.   He’s 2-0 with a 4.66 ERA in six games pitched this season for the Arizona Rookie League Dodgers.  The 6-4, 200-pound Abreu was an International free-agent signing by the Dodgers in July of 2017.

Gyorko, 30, who joined the Cardinals in 2016, has been on the Injured List (back/right wrist) since June 8.   He appeared in 38 games for the Cardinals this season, batting .196 with 2 HR’s and 7 RBI.

Bluffs teen admits to attempted abduction hoax

Police investigators in Council Bluffs said Wednesday (Today), that they spoke with a 15-year old female with regard to an alleged abduction attempt she reported to police Monday morning. In speaking with investigators, the girl recanted her story and admitted to fabricating the incident.

Authorities say the girl will not be charged with making a false police report. The recommendations police made to the general public on Monday, with regard to being aware of your surroundings while outside, and being alert for suspicious people/activity, are still very valid authorities say.

Police in Council Bluffs are investigating the alleged abduction of a teenager. Officers received a call at the 8:30-a.m. about a possible attempted abduction that had occurred in the area of Valley View and Mall Drive, in Council Bluffs. Police received information that a 15 year old female was running on Mall Drive when an unknown white male approached her and grabbed her by the arm. The female said that she struck the male and was able to run off. The suspect was described as being a white male, about 45-50 years old, who was wearing a black coat, blue jeans, grey shoes and a green stocking cap. Several officers checked the area but were unable to locate any suspects. The incident remains under investigation.

The CBPD would like to remind runners and bikers to be aware of their surroundings and whenever possible, travel in groups of 2 or more. Any suspicious people or activity should be reported to 9-1-1 immediately.

Iowa Lottery posts record results year ending June 30

CLIVE, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Lottery has posted record results for fiscal 2019, which ended June 30. Lottery officials say in a news release that sales, prizes to players and retail commissions all set records for the year. Preliminary figures released Wednesday show the generated a record $92.8 million in proceeds to state causes for the year. The sales record was $390.9 million, while prizes to players totaled a record $241.9 million. Lottery sales commissions to the retail locations that sell its tickets totaled $25.4 million.

The unaudited results show that sales increased 5.4% from the previous year. Scratch-game sales in Iowa have set records each year since fiscal 2015 and did so again this past year: $250.6 million.

UPDATE 11:57-a.m.: Schildberg Rec Area playground equipment installation is now postponed

Due to the weather, playground equipment installation planned for today at the Schildberg Recreation Area in Atlantic, has been postponed. Atlantic Parks and Rec Director Bryant Rassmussen had hoped to be able to have volunteers stop by this afternoon, but the rain continued as of mid-day, forcing a change in plans. We’ll let you know when the event is rescheduled.
