Northern Iowa’s Mark Farley previews No. 1 South Dakota State

Sports

November 1st, 2022 by Ric Hanson

UNI is receiving votes in the latest FCS top 25. The Panthers are coming off a thrilling 37-36 win at Southern Illinois and have won five of their last six heading into Saturday’s home finale against top ranked South Dakota State.

That’s UNI coach Mark Farley. The Panthers are 5-4 overall and Farley believes splitting the final two games will lock up an at-large bid into the FCS playoffs.

South Dakota State has won eight straight after a 7-3 loss at Iowa and the Jackrabbits have the second ranked defense in all of FCS.

Farley hopes the home field is an advantage on Saturday.

Farley says the fans can play a factor in the outcome.

The Hawkeyes open the regular season next Monday against Bethune-Cookman.

The Riverside Bulldogs will get the chance to play at state volleyball for the first time ever on Tuesday night. The Bulldogs will face the Springville Orioles in the Class 1A Quarterfinals at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Xtream Arena in Coralville and we’ll have coverage on KJAN.

The Bulldogs advanced to state with a 3-1 win over Gehlen Catholic last Wednesday night in Denison. Coach Brooke Flathers was thrilled with the growth of her team through the season.

The excitement was amplified with it being the first trip to state for the school and Sophia Taylor talked about that in the moment.

The Springville Orioles come in as the top-seed in the bracket with a record of 37-3. The Orioles fell in the 1A Championship match last year to Burlington Notre Dame 3-1. It’s a pretty balanced attack with three hitters over the 200 kill plateau: Kennady Breitfelder 284, Lily Clark 213, and Molly Stamp 202. Nia Howard leads the Orioles in assists with 877 and Rowan Jacobi has 73 blocks to pair with 68 blocks for Clark.

Riverside has a record of 33-5 and has been well tested down the stretch. It was a 3-2 win over Stanton in the Semifinals before defeating Gehlen Catholic. Veronica Andrusyshyn has 332 kills to lead the team while Mack Olmstead-Mitchell has 239. Ayla Richardson has 720 assists and Sophia Taylor leads the team in blocks with 58.

We’ll have coverage of the match on KJAN with pre-match coverage starting at 5:30 p.m. and first serve set for 6:00 p.m. Chris Parks has the call on AM 1220, FM 101.1, and online at KJAN.com
