Man who wanted ex-wife’s boyfriend killed pleads guilty

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A Davenport man has pleaded guilty to trying to hire someone to kill his ex-wife’s boyfriend. Scott County District Court records say 43-year-old John Cooper entered the plea Friday. His sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 19.

Prosecutors say Cooper had violated terms of a drug crime probation and been ordered in September to complete probation programming at the Residential Correctional Facility in Davenport. The court records say a cellphone confiscated from him there in November contained a message asking a former resident at the facility to kill another former resident who was in a relationship with Cooper’s ex-wife.

Rainfall in Atlantic (at KJAN) since 7-a.m. Sunday

Rainfall early this morning in Atlantic added .4″ (four-tenths) of an inch to the 2.2-inches of rain we received here Sunday, at KJAN. Our total 24-hour rainfall was 2.6-inches.

2 on board small plane unhurt when it goes down in cornfield

MARION, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say a two people were not injured when their plane went down in a cornfield in eastern Iowa’s Linn County. Deputies were sent to the area Saturday afternoon after receiving a report that the plane was down about a mile east of Iowa Highway 13, and around a mile  south of the Marion Airport. They couldn’t find the plane.
A drone was used to spot the aircraft Sunday. Authorities say pilot Bonnie Roth and student pilot Steph Draher were not hurt. The incident is being investigated.

Another drug-related arrest in Taylor County

The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office has charged an additional suspect in an ongoing narcotics distribution investigation. 36-year old Miguel Angel Lopez, formerly of Lenox, was arrested by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Sunday.. He was wanted on an active Taylor County Warrant for Controlled Substance Violation – Delivery of a Controlled Substance, a Class C Felony. Lopez is being held without bond pending an appearance before the Magistrate.

Sheriff’s officials report also, 29-year old Luke Samo, of Diagonal, was arrested Saturday, following an investigation into an incident that occurred Friday, in the 200 block of Broadway, in Clearfield. Samo was charged with Domestic Abuse Assault- by Strangulation. He was being held at the Taylor County Jail without bond, pending an initial appearance with the magistrate.

At 506 AM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from near Stuart to 11 miles west of Lakeside Casino to near Lamoni. Movement was east at 55 mph.

Winds of 40 to 50 mph will be possible with these storms.

Locations impacted include…
Des Moines, West Des Moines, Indianola, Norwalk, Winterset, Osceola,
Chariton, Leon, Corydon, Carlisle, Lamoni, Pleasantville, Earlham,
Melcher-Dallas, Sun Valley Lake, Avenue Of The Saints Event Center,

Doppler radar was tracking strong thunderstorms along a line extending from near Griswold to near Villisca to 6 miles south of Hopkins. Movement was east at 60 mph. Winds of 35 to 45 mph will be possible with these storms.

Winds could gust as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 65. North wind 5 to 8 mph becoming calm in the evening.
Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 82. North northwest wind 5 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 76.
Thursday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly sunny, with a high near 79.

Sunday’s High in Atlantic was 84. Our Low this morning, 69. We received 2.6-inches of rain from 7-a.m. Sunday thru 7-a.m. today. Last year on this date, our High was 91 and the Low was 58. The All-time Record High in Atlantic on this date was 108 in 1936. The All-time Record Low was 42, in 2004.

There is a risk for severe weather today, especially over the southern two-thirds of the state. The main threats will be strong wind gusts and locally heavy rainfall this morning. If additional storms develop later today, isolated tornadoes could be possible along with locally heavy rainfall.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Tuesday through Sunday

Storm chances may return to the area later in the week with any threat of severe weather better assessed in the coming days.
