No. 4 Iowa women host Evansville Thursday night

The fourth ranked Iowa Hawkeye women return to action at home on Thursday night against Evansville. The Hawkeyes opened with a lopsided win over Southern and junior guard Caitlin Clark says they won get caught looking ahead to Sunday’s in-state game at Drake. Iowa coach Lisa Bluder says after one game she ikes the added depth on this team.

Evansville opened with a victory over Eastern Kentucky. We’ll have the game tonight on KJAN with pregame at 6:15 p.m.

Drake beats IUPUI 80-48

Tucker DeVries scored 22 points and added eight rebounds and Drake raced out to an 18-0 lead in an 80-48 win over IUPUI.

That’s Drake coach Darian DeVries. With Roman Penn out with an injury freshman Connor Enright stepped in at point guard and finished with 10 points and four assists.

WACO, Wayland 29, Newell-Fonda 21

Simeon Reichenbach ran for two touchdowns and kicked two field goals to lead the Warriors on to the championship game. Reichenbach connected on kicks from 28 and 20 yards and ran for a 23 yard go-ahead score late in the 3rd quarter. It was a fairly even game statistically but the Mustangs did have one turnover on an interception that the Warriors turned into 7 points. The Warriors improved to 13-0 and the Mustangs end the season at 10-2.

St. Mary’s, Remsen 42, Lenox 20

Both teams scored on their first offensive play of the game but the Remsen, St. Mary’s Hawks eventually pulled away for the win. The Hawks piled up 436 yards of offense to just outpace Lenox’ 374. Cael Ortmann was 10-17 for 220 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Ryan Willmaan had 163 yards receiving and caught all three scores from Ortmann. Lenox got a great effort on the ground from Gabe Funk with 154 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Tigers end the season at 11-1. The Hawks improved to 12-0.

Iowa’s Kirk Ferentz previews Wisconsin

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says the Hawkewyes made strides in wins over Northwestern and Purdue and will need to be even better this week at home against Wisconsin. The Badgers have won five of the last six in the series and during that stretch have feasted on Hawkeye mistakes.

The Badgers are 3-1 since firing Paul Chryst and elevating defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard to interim coach. The Badgers are coming off a 23-10 win over Maryland.

Ferentz says the Badger defense does a good job of disguising pressure.

A consistent them in this series has been the team that runs the ball the best has won the game.

Iowa State’s Matt Campbell previews Oklahoma State

Iowa State takes a more confident offense on the road to Oklahoma State. The Cyclones piled up 391 yards of offense and scored 21 fourth quarter points in a 31-14 win over West Virginia.

That’s Cyclone coach Matt Campbell who feels it was a breakthrough performance by the offense.

The Cyclones aren’t sure who will start at quarterback for Oklahoma State but Campbell says the Cowboys remain a veteran team.

Campbell says despite the injuries the Cowboys remain a talented offense.

UNI’s Mark Farley talks FCS playoff hopes

UNI coach Mark Farley says he will have a better idea about the Panthers’ playoff chances after this coming weekend. UNI is 5-5 overall after a heart breaking loss to top ranked South Dakota State. They are off this week and will close the regular season at South Dakota.

Farley says the Panthers benefit from playing a challenging schedule.

Farley says the strength of the Missouri Valley Football conference is also a plus.

UNI Men (1-0): Bowen Born scored 19 points to lead UNI to a 105-49 win over Wartburg. Landon Wolf added 18 and Nate Heise had 14 for the Panthers.

UNI Women (1-0): Grace Boffeli dropped 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead UNI to a grind it out win over St. Thomas 58-46. Kam Finley added 18 for the Panthers.

Drake Women (1-0): Grace Berg had 20 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals to power Drake to an 80-67 win over Green Bay. Maggie Bair added 17 points and 8 boards.

Iowa beats Bethune-Cookman 89-58

Tony Perkins scored 16 points and Iowa opened the second half with an 11-0 run and raced away to an 89-58 win over Bethune-Cookman in their season opener. Perkins made seven of nine shots and also dished out five assists and was one of five Hawkeyes in double figures.

Perkins says depth is a strength for the Hawkeyes as well as versatility.

Perkins says he tried to set the tone with defense.
