News

August 29th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

CLIVE, Iowa (AP) — Officials in suburban Des Moines are seeking answers on what has caused a creek there to turn bright green. The Des Moines Register reports that city officials reached out to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources on Tuesday morning after a Clive resident posted a photo online of a vivid green Walnut Creek.

Department officials have since taken samples of the water, but Clive Assistant City Manager Pete DeKock says the department has not shared the results with city officials. DNR senior environmental specialist Janet Gastineau says the agency has traced the green water back to a lake in the Country Club development, but did not say caused the bright green color.

Iowa election official says Russians using social media to sow dischord

News

August 29th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate says hackers have NOT compromised any Iowa voting systems, but Pate says the Russians are waging a “war of public opinion” on social media to sow doubt about the U.S. election process.  “I think, if anything, the Russians proved they were very active on that front and the things they’ve done, cyber-wise, has been to create the doubt, not to really get a result or impact an election directly,” Pate says. “…That’s as damaging as if they did get in.”

Pate says Russian military officials visited some public websites for Iowa counties before the 2016 election, but did not access any PRIVATE information. Pate says his office is working on another election-related project — to improve the flawed list of people who are barred from voting because of a felony conviction.

“We’ll probably end up having one full-time person doing this and monitoring it because bad information in is bad information out,” Pate says. “We have to make sure that when we get information from other government entities, we have to ensure that it’s the most accurate and up-to-date.”

The Des Moines Register has reported some Iowans who are NOT felons have wrongly had their ballots rejected. Pate says his office doesn’t maintain the list, but the court system sends a list of felons to his office and that list is passed along to county auditors, who have the power to add and remove names from the list of eligible voters. Pate admits people convicted of felonies in other states aren’t all being added to the list.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Hunter Dozier homered before driving in the go-ahead run, Ryan O’Hearn also went deep, and the Kansas City Royals held on to beat the Oakland Athletics 6-4. Tim Hill tossed two perfect innings to earn the win in relief, and Ian Kennedy survived a shaky ninth to earn his 23rd save. Blake Treinen took the loss after facing four batters and failing to record an out in the seventh inning for Oakland.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Keston Hiura homered and drove in three runs, Jordan Lyles turned in another strong start and the Milwaukee Brewers snapped the St. Louis Cardinals’ six-game winning streak with a 4-1 victory. The NL Central-leading Cardinals had won 15 of 18 and were trying for a three-game sweep. The Brewers ended a three-game skid. Milwaukee got off to a fast start against Jack Flaherty, who had given up a total of just one run in his previous five starts.

UNDATED (AP) — It seems no one’s talking about Northwestern even though it won the Big Ten West last year. The chatter surely will start if the Wildcats beat the Cardinal on the road Saturday. Purdue’s defense will get a good test in a road game against Nevada. Illinois is on upset alert when it hosts an Akron team that beat Northwestern last year. Jonathan Taylor begins defense of his national rushing title when Wisconsin takes on South Florida.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — No. 24 Nebraska has suspended wide receiver Andre Hunt and tight end Katerian Legrone indefinitely. Offensive coordinator Troy Walters announced Hunt and Legrone are being held out of all team activities. Walters declined to comment on the reason for the suspensions. The Cornhuskers open the season Saturday against South Alabama.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Michigan transfer receiver Oliver Martin has been cleared to play this season for Iowa, starting with Saturday’s opener against Miami (Ohio). The 20th-ranked Hawkeyes say Martin has been approved for immediate eligibility by the NCAA and the Big Ten. Martin, a graduate of Iowa City West High, caught 11 passes for the Wolverines in 2018.

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Vikings defensive end Karter Schult is among the dozens of fringe players on NFL teams this month who have appreciated the training camp grind as much as ever, given their setback this spring when the Alliance of American Football suddenly folded. The league was eight weeks into a 10-game schedule when the plug was pulled. Though the AAF has joined several predecessors on the scrap heap of alternatives to the NFL, the experience for Schult and his peers was not for naught.
