Red zone woes doom Iowa State

Sports

November 20th, 2022 by admin

The Iowa State Cyclones went 1-5 in the red zone and came up short against Texas Tech 14-10 on Saturday night in Ames. The Cyclone defense bottled up the Red Raiders offense for most of the game but the offense couldn’t put enough points on the board. A late 77-yard drive capped off by a touchdown pass from Tyler Shough to Baylor Cupp gave Tech the win. That drive followed the Cyclones taking their first lead on a 24-yard touchdown pass from Hunter Dekkers to Easton Dean.

Before that final drive the Cyclone defense had held the Red Raiders to 157 yards of offense. But it wasn’t enough on a frigid 14-degree windchill night.

Xavier Hutchinson had another monster game on senior night with 101 yards on eight catches, including a couple of acrobatic sideline grabs. Hutchinson moved into 8th place on the Big 12 career receiving list with 252 receptions. It was also his 13th 100-yard game, breaking a tie with Allen Lazard for the school record.

Will McDonald IV also made history with a sack to move into a tie for first place on the Big 12’s career sack list.

Iowa State will conclude the season next Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. game at undefeated TCU.
