Oskaloosa mother pleads guilty in toddler daughter’s death

OSKALOOSA, Iowa (AP) — An Oskaloosa woman has pleaded guilty in the 2014 death of her 17-month-old daughter.

Des Moines television station KCCI reports that Alicia Ritenour pleaded guilty Thursday to child endangerment causing death. KCCI says she received a sentence of 50 years in prison with credit for time served.

Ritenour was convicted of first-degree murder in November 2014, but a judge set aside her conviction in December and ordered a new trial after agreeing with her that her trial attorney had been ineffective.

Police went to Ritenour’s Oskaloosa apartment in January 2014 following a 911 call and found 17-month-old Ava Ritenour dead. An autopsy showed she died of head trauma.

Iowa home to 24.9 million pigs, a new record and up 6%

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa now has 24.9 million pigs on farms, a record number and up 6% from last year.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture released the figures Friday for the quarter ending Sept. 1. It showed Iowa farms have just over 1 million breeding pigs and 23.9 million market hogs, or those raised for meat.

The growth in hog numbers comes as environmental groups are trying to force the state to slow expansion of pig farms. A state court judge on Sept. 10 said two environmental groups may proceed to trial in their lawsuit alleging the state’s policy of expanding hog farms and its voluntary farm pollution controls violate the rights of citizens to clean water in the Raccoon River.

The USDA says the national inventory of pigs is at 77.7 million, the highest number for Sept. 1 since records began in 1988.

I-680 from Omaha into Iowa, I-29 stretch in Iowa reopen

News

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Portions of interstates in Omaha and across the Missouri River in western Iowa have reopened after being closed for several days for flooding.

The Interstate 680 bridge spanning the Missouri River from Omaha to the Interstate 29 interchange in Iowa reopened Friday afternoon, as did I-29 in Iowa from Crescent to Council Bluffs.

The Iowa Department of Transportation tells the Omaha World-Herald that floodwaters have receded and cleanup is complete on the roadways.

The department cautioned that rainfall expected in the area could cause additional flooding that would require the exit and entrance ramps in the area to close again with little or no advance notice.

Flood-related closures continue on both directions of I-29 between the Crescent and the Loveland exits and on Iowa Highways 275 and 333 near Hamburg.

Court documents say Durrell was released $2,000 bond. His next court appearance is Oct. 7.

No attorney for Durrell appears in online court records. Durrell did not immediately return a message left Friday at a phone listing for him.

The Atlantic Trojans football team played their most complete game of the season and topped the Kuemper Catholic Knights 20-18 on Friday night in Carroll.

The Trojans jumped out to an early 10-0 advantage in the first quarter. Tyler Moen kicked a 26-yard field goal on the Trojans first offensive possession. He added a 2 yard touchdown run on their second possession of the game to give the Trojans the early advantage that they would not relinquish. Kuemper Catholic answered the Moen touchdown with a 13-play, 80 yard drive that was capped by a Cole Collison 1 yard touchdown run on 4th and goal. The Trojans blocked the extra point to make it 10-6 at halftime.

The second half started slow with the two teams trading 4 punts. Tyler Moen then ripped off an 80 yard touchdown run on the third possession of the half for Atlantic to give the Trojans a 17-6 edge. Kuemper answered with a touchdown drive finished by a 10 yard pass from Collison to Blaise Gunnerson. The Trojans stuffed the two point conversion attempt to keep the score at 17-12. Atlantic then went on a 13 play, 74 yard drive that was capped by a 34-yard field goal by Moen to give the Trojans an 8 point lead.

Kuemper Catholic was left with 3:19 to try to drive to tie the game. The Knights were able to march 60 yards in 10 plays to punch a score in with just :31 seconds left. Collison dove in on a one yard run to get the score. It then came down to the 2 point conversion try to tie the game. The Knights pitched the ball to Kyle Berg on a sweep around right end. He built some momentum but was met at around the 2 yard line by Moen and a couple other Trojans to bring him down short of the goal line.

The Trojans then secured an onside attempt by the Knights and took a couple of knees to secure the win.

Moen had another sensational outing with 224 yards on 25 carries with two touchdowns and the two big field goals. The Trojans outgained the Knights 331-269 on the night.

Atlantic improves to 2-3 and opens up 2A-District 9 play with a win. They will travel to face a ranked OA-BCIG team in Ida Grove next week. Kuemper Catholic falls to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in the district. The Knights travel to Greene County next week.

4th Republican joins race for US House seat held by King

News

September 27th, 2019 by admin

ARNOLDS PARK, Iowa (AP) — A businessman has become the fourth Republican challenger for the U.S. House seat held by fellow Republican Steve King.

Fifty-eight-year-old Steve Reeder, of Arnolds Park, said in announcing his candidacy Thursday that balancing the federal budget, revitalizing rural areas and improving access to quality health care are key issues for his campaign.

He says he wants to create “task teams from communities in the 4th District, so that concerns, ideas and solutions may be heard.”

The GOP field also includes state Sen. Randy Feenstra, of Hull; former state legislator Jeremy Taylor, of Sioux City; and Bret Richards, a former mayor of Irwin.

King was first elected in 2002 and is seeking another term. He’s known for his comments about race, immigration and abortion. In January he was stripped of his committee assignments and rebuked by the House in a 424-1 vote for comments about white supremacy.
