Kickoff times set for Iowa and Iowa State October 19th football games

Kickoff times have been announced for both the Iowa and Iowa State football games on October 19th.

Iowa will host Purdue on that date and it has been set for an 11:00am kickoff at Kinnick Stadium. The game will be televised by ESPN2. We’ll have coverage on the Hawkeye Radio Network beginning with pregame at 9:00am on KJAN.

Television coverage for this week’s game for the Hawkeyes against Penn State has been confirmed as well. That 6:30pm will be televised on ABC.

Iowa State’s game at Texas Tech on the 19th has also been set for an 11:00am kickoff and will be televised on FS1.

Iowa board approves payment for student suicide jury verdict

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — A state panel that approves payment for lawsuits and legal settlements for the state of Iowa has approved payment of $315,000 to the parents of an Iowa State University student who died by suicide in November 2015. A jury in August found the state partially liable for the death of Dane Schussler. The lawsuit alleged the state failed to provide adequate mental health services.

Schussler had received counseling at the university for anxiety and depression before he was found dead on railroad tracks in Ames. The Iowa attorney general’s office recommended no appeal and payment of the jury verdict. It was approved by the Iowa State Appeal Board on Monday.

RICHARD EARL MOORE, 73, of Avoca died Monday, October 7th at home. Services for RICHARD EARLMOORE will be held on Wednesday, October 9th at 2:30 pm at the Pauley-Jones Funeral Home in Avoca.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 2:00 pm to 2:30 pm at the funeral home.

Burial in the Graceland Cemetery in Avoca.

RICHARD EARL MOORE is survived by:

Wife:  Catherine Moore of Avoca.

Daughters:  Christine (Kevin) Snook of Bellevue, NE; Charity Moore of Avoca.

Manure reached Cass County creek near Atlantic

ATLANTIC—Officials with the Iowa DNR said Monday (Today), that following a producer’s report on Oct. 4th, DNR staff investigated a manure spill about seven miles northwest of Atlantic.

DNR staff found that an unknown amount of manure had overflowed a pit at the Dennis Kuehl hog operation prior to their site visit Friday afternoon. The manure flowed into an underground tile line, then into an unnamed tributary to Camp Creek.

DNR staff did not see any fish in the stream. The producer is moving the animals to prevent further overflows. He plans to pump out and land apply manure from the pit. DNR will monitor cleanup and consider appropriate enforcement action.

Cass County Sheriff’s report (10/7)

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports six arrests. Early this (Monday) morning, 29-year old Cam Christopher Jahnke, of Oakland, was arrested on charges of Driving While Barred (Aggravated) and OWI 1st Offense (Serious). Jahnke was taken to the Cass County Jail and later released on his own recognizance.

Last Saturday, 30-year old Brandon Michael Harry, of Griswold, was arrested on a charge of OWI 2nd Offense (Aggravated). Harry was taken to the Cass County Jail and released later that day on his own recognizance. And, 20-year old Austin Michael Boggs, of Atlantic, was arrested for Driving While Barred (Aggravated). Boggs was taken to the Cass County Jail and released later that day on $2,000 bond.

On Oct. 3rd, 29-year old Norrin Blake Bishop, of Council Bluffs, turned himself in at the Cass County Sheriff’s Office on an Atlantic Police Department warrant for felony two Class-D Felony counts of Conspiracy to Commit a Nonforcible Felony. Bishop was booked at the Cass County Jail and remains held on $10,000 bond. 30-year old Michael H. Hansen, of Waukee, was arrested on a charge of Contempt Violation No Contact Order. Hansen was taken to the Cass County Jail where he remains held on $1,000 bond.

And, on September 27th, 2019, Cass County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 23-year old Blake Michael Zweck, of Madison, WI, on a District Court warrant for Violation of Probation. Zweck was taken to the Cass County Jail where he remains held on $1,000 bond.

Hummingbird Migration is Underway

The Iowa Dept. of Natural Resources said today (Monday), ruby-throated Hummingbirds are headed south for the winter. Hummingbird migration in Iowa usually lasts from late August to early October. This year, hummingbirds are still being reported throughout the state in the second week of October. Many of the birds we’re seeing now bred north of Iowa and are working their way to their wintering areas in Mexico and Central America. So, when is the right time to take down hummingbird feeders? And can feeding them stop the hummers from migrating when they should?

Hummingbirds, like other species, need to build up body fat in order to make their large migration flights, so refueling locations like backyard feeders are important. One of the triggers for birds to migrate is day length, and regardless of food availability they will migrate as the days grow shorter. The best thing to do is to keep hummingbird feeders up for at least 10 days after you see your last hummingbird to make sure and provide food for any migrating stragglers.

The Mills County Sheriff’s Office reports one arrest. 40-year old Jon Dawson Roberts, of Imogene, was arrested at around 3:20-a.m. Sunday, for Driving While Barred, and on a warrant for Violation of Probation. His bond was set at $4,000.

Unions sue USDA seeking to halt new pork processing rules

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The union representing workers at pork processing plants has sued the federal government to challenge new rules finalized in September that allow companies to set line speeds and turn more food safety tasks over to company employees. The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union and local unions in Minnesota, Iowa and Kansas have joined with nonprofit consumer advocacy group Public Citizen to file the lawsuit in federal court in Minnesota.

The lawsuit alleges that the new rules announced in September by the U.S. Department of Agriculture violate the Administrative Procedure Act because it is not backed by reasoned decision-making and should be set aside. A USDA spokeswoman says the agency does not comment on pending litigation.

Pat Grassley, grandson of US Senator, to be Iowa Speaker

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa House Republicans have chosen Rep. Pat Grassley to head their leadership teams as Speaker-Select of the Iowa House. The grandson of U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley was chosen by the GOP House caucus on Monday. He takes over as speaker after a vote of the full House in January. Current Speaker Linda Upmeyer announced last week she would step down as speaker but serve the remainder of her current House term through the end of 2020.

Grassley, a 36-year old farmer from New Hartford was first elected to the House in 2006. He operates a family farm with his father and grandfather, who also served in the Iowa House from 1959 to 1975. Rep. Matt Windschitl was chosen majority leader and Rep. John Wills speaker pro tem.
