According to multiple reports Michigan transfer quarterback Cade McNamara has committed to continue his career at Iowa. McNamara posted to social media with the decision on Thursday. The transfer portal officially opens on Monday.

McNamara helped lead the Wolverines to the College Football Playoff in 2021 but lost his starting job early this season to JJ McCarthy. He also suffered a leg injury and underwent surgery for the issue during the season.

McNamara will have two years of eligibility left to use at Iowa.

Treynor Thursday Night Smackdown

AHSTW’s Isabella Canada was the 209-223 bracket champion in Treynor on Thursday night. Logan-Magnolia’s Jordan Buffum won the 117-123 title. Kuemper Catholic had two winners: Grace Hoffman at 103-109 and Kenadie Wolterman at 267.

The Atlantic boys basketball team opens up the 2022-23 season on Friday with a home game against the Glenwood Rams and the Trojans are anxious to build on a good finish to last season. It will be the second season under head coach Derek Hall and he said it’s been good to get right to work since the kids are familiar with him and the system they put in last year.

The Trojans are coming off an 8-14 campaign in 2021-22 but that included a lot of close games. They did a much better job of closing out those close games at the end of last season, winning five of their last eight games.

Atlantic returns three of their top five scorers from last season, led by junior Colton Rasmussen who led the team with 308 points last year. Carter Pellett was third on the team with 231 points and Jackson McLaren finished with 111 points last year. Coach Hall thinks this group has great potential.

The Trojans open with the home game against Glenwood Friday and then host ADM on Saturday.

DES MOINES, IOWA – In front of over 4,000 elementary and middle school students at the annual Pack the Knapp game, the Drake women’s basketball team rolled past Lindenwood in an 87-60 victory inside a full arena on Thursday, Dec. 1.

Maggie Bair scored the first eight points for the Bulldogs, who were out to an 8-2 lead within the first two minutes of the contest. Lindenwood trimmed the deficit to five points (18-13) with 2:53 to play in the opening quarter, but Drake finished the frame strong with a Megan Meyer trifecta in the closing seconds for a 27-17 advantage after one period of play.

The Bulldogs pulled away for good in the second quarter. Lindenwood’s Sophia Horton scored the first basket of the second quarter before Drake ventured on an 11-0 run capped off by an Ashley Iiams layup as the home team led 38-19 at the 6:04 mark.

Sarah Beth Gueldner led all scorers with 17 points, a new season high. Bair followed with 16 points while Katie Dinnebier added 14 and Meyer chipped in 13.

Drake will hit the road to visit South Dakota on Tuesday, Dec. for their next matchup.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior linebacker Jack Campbell has been named the Butkus Award Player of the Month for November. The announced was made Thursday by the Butkus Foundation.

Campbell and the Hawkeyes posted a 3-1 record in November with wins at Purdue and Minnesota and a home victory over Wisconsin. In the four games, Campbell totaled 36 tackles, including 20 solo tackles and 16 assists. He had a forced fumble and pass interception in the final five minutes of the win at Minnesota, which led to Iowa’s game-winning field goal with 28 seconds remaining.

It was announced in November that Campbell is one of five finalists for the Butkus Award, which goes annually to the top linebacker in the nation. The 2022 Butkus Award winner will be announced the first week in December. Campbell was a semifinalist for the Butkus Award in 2021.

Earlier this week Campbell was named the Nagurski-Wooden Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and the Butkus-Fitzgerald Big Ten Linebacker of the Year and he earned first-team All-Big Ten honors for the second consecutive season.

Campbell (6-foot-5, 246-pounds) has led Iowa’s defense all season. He has totaled 118 tackles, which are second in the Big Ten and tied for 13th nationally.  The Cedar Falls, Iowa, native also recorded two interceptions, one recovered fumble and one forced fumble, along with 3.5 tackles for loss. He has 295 career tackles to rank 19th in program history.

Campbell is also a finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which will be announced Tuesday, Dec. 6. He was named a semifinalist for the Bednarik and Rotary Lombardi awards

Former Hawkeye linebacker Josey Jewell was a semifinalist for the Butkus Award in both 2016 and 2017, while Chad Greenway was a semifinalist in 2005. Larry Station placed second in the Butkus Award balloting in 1985.

Iowa (7-5, 5-4) will find out its bowl destination on Sunday. The Hawkeyes are expecting their 20th bowl invite over the past 24 seasons under Moon Family head football coach Kirk Ferentz.

The 10th ranked Iowa Hawkeye women host 12th North Carolina State tonight (Thursday night), in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge. It continues a demanding part of the schedule for the Hawkeyes who are coming off a loss to third ranked UConn.

That’s Iowa coach Lisa Bluder. The Hawkeyes are 5-2. The Wolfpack are 6-1 with the lone loss coming to UConn.

Bluder says rebounding will be a key to the outcome.

Iowa State outscored North Dakota 37-20 in the second half as the 23rd ranked Cyclones posted a 63-44 victory, overcoming a sluggish opening half in which they led 26-24 at the break. ISU coach T.J. Otzelberger.

Caleb Grill led the Cyclones with 16 points, including four of five from three point range.

Freshman Tamin Lipsey added 11 points and says the Cyclones started slow after a long trip back from Portland.

The Cyclones host St. John’s Sunday afternoon.
