Iowa will debut a new quarterback in the Music City Bowl

It will be Iowa against Kentucky New Year’s Eve in the Music City Bowl in Nashville and the Hawkeyes will debut a new starting quarterback. Starter Spencer Petras injured a shoulder against Nebraska and backup Alex Padilla is in the transfer portal. Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz.

The starter will be either redshirt freshman Joe Labas or true freshman Carson May. Neither has played a down.

Ferentz says they will make a decision on a starter based on bowl practice.

Ferentz says while it is an unusual situation injuries are a part of football and the Hawks will be forced to adjust.

Defensive back Cooper DeJean was injured in the loss to Nebraska and tight end Sam LaPorta missed that game due to injury. Ferentz expects both to be ready for the bowl game.

No. 23 Iowa State men beat St. John’s 71-60

Iowa State’s defense smothered St. John’s early as the 23rd ranked Cyclones posted a 71-60 win in Ames. The Red Storm shot 36 percent, including three of 16 from three point range.

That’s coach T.J. Otzelberger. The Cyclones were able to slow down a St. John’s team that likes to push the tempo.

Otzelberger felt the Cyclones played well overall as they improved to 7-1.

No. 10 Iowa women win at Wisconsin

The 10th ranked Iowa Hawkeye women outscored Wisconsin 32-14 in the second quarter won at Wisconsin 102-71 in their Big Ten opener. Caitlin Clark had the seventh triple-double of her career with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

That’s Iowa coach Lisa Bluder. The Hawkeyes shot 63 percent for the game and held the Badgers to 37 percent.

Drakes takes down UIC

Drake took down the University of Illinois Chicago Flames 77-64 on Saturday at the Knapp Center. The Bulldogs outscored the Flames 39-19 in the first half and held on to the win.

Tucker DeVries dropped in 25 points to lead the Bulldogs. Drake used a 27-6 in the first half to seize control of the game.

The Bulldogs improved to 7-1 overall and 1-1 in MVC play. Next up for Drake is a home game on Wednesday against Omaha at 7:00 p.m.

UNI women drop road game at South Dakota State

The UNI women’s basketball team sputtered in the fourth quarter and lost at South Dakota State 80-69 on Saturday. The Jackrabbits outscored the Panthers 29-18 in the final period to grab the win.

South Dakota State was led by 19 points from Myah Selland and 14 from Haleigh Timmer. They improved to 5-4 overall.

Three Panthers finished in double-figures: Emerson Green 17pts, Grace Boffeli 15pts, and Maya McDermott 14pts. UNI falls to 4-3 on the season.

Next up for UNI is a home game against North Dakota State on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m.

UNI men’s hoops gets win over Evansville

The UNI men’s basketball team beat Evansville 72-58 on Saturday in Cedar Falls. The Panthers led the entire way and bursted out to an 18-4 lead in the first five and a half minutes.

Bowen Born led the Panthers with 29 points. Tytan Anderson added 19 points, 9 rebounds, and 2 steals.

UNI improved to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the Valley. Next up for the Panthers is a home game on Tuesday against Toledo at 7:30 p.m.

Audubon Girls Wrestling Tournament 12/03/2022

16 teams were present for the Audubon Girls Varsity Wrestling Tournament on Saturday.

The SWAT Valkyries got championships from Adyson Lundquist (120C), Evy Marlin (135), Rio Johnson (155C), Grace Britten (170B), Ellen Gerlock (190), and Haley Armstrong (235).

AHSTW’s Isabella Canada won the 235A bracket.

Denison-Schleswig’s Taylor Totten won the 190A bracket.

Western Iowa’s Kacy Miller won at 110A and Montana Farren won at 125A.
