JAMES “JIM” JOHNSON, 85, of Exira, died Sunday, Oct. 13th, at the Exira Care Center. Memorial services for JAMES “JIM” JOHNSON will be held 10:30-a.m. Friday, Oct. 18th, at the Exira Lutheran Church. Kessler Funeral Home in Exira has the arrangements.

Family visitation will be held at the Exira Lutheran Church, from 9:30-a.m. until the time of service, Friday.

Burial will be held in the Exira Cemetery, at a later date.

JAMES “JIM” JOHNSON is survived by:

Wife:  Donna Johnson, of Exira.

Daughters:   Brenda (Bill) McAdaragh of Tinly Park, IL; Colette (Ed) Ergenbright of Newton; Laurie Johnson of McAllen, TX.

Son:  Jason (Angela) Johnson of Derby.

13 grandchildren, his in-laws, other relatives and friends.

Red Oak man arrested Monday evening for Domestic Abuse Assault

Police in Red Oak responded at around 6:10-p.m. Monday, to a fight between a man and a woman in the 700 block of N. 4th Street. Upon investigation, officers arrested 38-year old Jacob Lynn Derby, of Red Oak, on charges of Domestic Abuse Assault by intending to impede air or blood flow, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Derby was transported to the Montgomery County Jail, and was being held without bond.

2 Red Oak men arrested for fighting Tue. Morning

Police in Red Oak were called at around 1-a.m. today (Tuesday), to the 400 block of East Elm Street,  for a fight in progress. Upon further investigation, officers arrested 25-year old Shilo J. Major, of Red Oak, and 31-year old Joshua Arthur Rhodes, of Council Bluffs. Both were charged with Assault.

Major and Rhodes were transported to the Montgomery County Jail, and held on $300 bond, each. Deputies with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office assisted in conducting the arrests.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — State budget experts say revenue for the current fiscal year is expected to grow 1.4 percent to total $7.97 billion and next year will see a 2.7 percent increase, taking the state tax collections just over $8.18 billion. The revenue growth estimates are significantly slower than last year’s 6.4 percent expansion but that was driven in part by tax policy changes.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The mother of a 4-year-old boy who shot himself after finding an unsecured gun in her vehicle has been sentenced to a year of probation. Polk County court records say 28-year-old Rachel Rowe also was fined $315. The boy found the .45-caliber handgun inside another container in her vehicle and shot himself in an upper arm.

MARION, Iowa (AP) — Work has begun to expand the airport runway in the Cedar Rapids suburb of Marion. The Gazette reports a groundbreaking ceremony was held last week for the $1.7 million project. The work will widen the runway from 23 to 60 feet, meeting the standards of a basic service airport. And additional $400,000 is being spent to replace lighting. The project is being funded by a $424,000 grant from the Iowa Department of Transportation and city bonds.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Backers of a skateboard under construction in downtown Des Moines say they have reached their $6.3 million funding goal. The Lauridsen Skatepark will be the nation’s largest when it’s completed in spring 2020. The 88,000-square-foot skate park is being built on five acres of land between Second Avenue and the Des Moines River.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Stephen Strasburg took his turn silencing the Cardinals’ struggling bats, Nationals postseason star Howie Kendrick doubled three times and drove in three more runs, and Washington moved one win from the city’s first World Series appearance in 86 years by beating St. Louis 8-1 to take a 3-0 lead in the NL Championship Series. Strasburg struck out 12 in 7 innings.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Pitching, defense and baserunning abandoned the Cardinals and their hitting never showed up in Game 3 of the NLCS. They got blown out 8-1 by the Washington Nationals to fall into a 3-0 hole and are one loss from being swept out of the series. St. Louis has scored one run through three games.

UNDATED (AP) — The Detroit Lions are the latest victim of questionable calls by officials that have seemingly become a regular part of every game. This time, it was two hands-to-the-face calls that aided Green Bay in its fourth-quarter comeback from a nine-point deficit for a 23-22 win. Both calls were on Lions defensive end Trey Flowers, who appeared to be grabbing his man by the shoulder and not the facemask or throat.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have struggled for Andy Reid’s entire tenure to stop the run. Now, with a team pegged as Super Bowl contenders, they may be worse than ever. Injuries have mounted on the defensive line, middle linebacker Anthony Hitchens also is hobbled and coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s switch from a 3-4 system to a 4-3 has failed to produce any noticeable improvement. It’s no wonder the Chiefs’ run defense is making opposing backs look like stars.

UNDATED (AP) — Nebraska will play Illinois in Dublin, Ireland, to open the 2021 season. It’s the second game in a five-game series of college games on the Emerald Isle. Navy and Notre Dame will meet in Dublin next season. The matchup in Dublin will be Nebraska’s first game outside of the United States since the Cornhuskers beat Kansas State in the 1992 Coca-Cola Bowl in Tokyo.

JOHN MOLGAARD, 81, of Atlantic, died Monday, Oct. 14th, at home. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service for JOHN MOLGAARD will be held 10:30-a.m. Oct. 23rd,  at the Roland Funeral Home, in Atlantic.

Burial is in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Kimballton, at a later date.

Memorials may be directed to the ARISE Foundation for the use of the American Legion Memorial Building, in Atlantic.

Cass County Democrats sponsor Winter Clothing Drive

The Cass County Democratic Party is sponsoring a Winter Clothing Drive to help secure warm clothes, winter night clothes, and blankets for those residents. County Chair Sherry Toelle asks that people “please bring new or ‘clean, gently used’ items to drop boxes across the county from mid-October through November 15, 2019. Donations will be distributed through the clothes closets and schools throughout the county. Children’s clothing—coats, hats, gloves/mittens, boots, even socks and underwear—are especially needed as are larger sized adult clothing.”

Drop-off sites include:
