News

November 4th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

A reminder today from Cass County Democratic Party Chair Sherry Toelle: The Cass County Democratic Party is sponsoring a Winter Clothing Drive to help secure warm clothes, winter night clothes, and blankets for residents who may not have the resources needed to purchase necessary winter clothing. Toelle asks that people “please bring new or ‘clean, gently used’ items to drop boxes across the county, now through November 15, 2019. Donations will be distributed through the clothes closets and schools throughout the county. Children’s clothing—coats, hats, gloves/mittens, boots, even socks and underwear—are especially needed as are larger sized adult clothing.”

Toelle says “We had a similar event two years ago. The response was overwhelming. We hope that people will be willing to match that response [this year].”

Drop-off sites for good, clean winter clothing (such as caps/gloves & coats) include:

Anita: Rolling Hills Bank, Library, Rusty Razor.

Atlantic: YMCA, Rolling Hills Bank, Private home at 10 E. 13th St.

Cumberland: Telephone Company, City Hall, Library, Houghton State Bank.

Griswold: Rolling Hills Bank, Telephone Company, Library, Houghton State Bank

Lewis: Library

Massena: Economy Food Mart, FN Bank

Late harvest, cold weather tighten up propane supplies

Ag/Outdoor

November 4th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — The governor, late last week, signed a proclamation temporarily suspending certain regulation on the hours of service for the delivery of propane. Early winter weather conditions the late harvest are all creating a big demand for the liquid gas. The president of Demmer Oil Company in the Worthington, Steve Demmer, says supplying his northeast Iowa customers with liquid propane (LP) has not been easy. “We have gotten 25 percent of what we actually need. We are working very hard — we are getting propane out of Chicago and Kansas — but those are long deliveries,” Demmer says. “So this is going to be something to try and get through this year.”

It is not uncommon for fall demand to slow the deliveries — but he says this year is tougher. “This is the worst we’ve ever seen it. We’ve gotten through every other year and we’ve always gotten propane — 2008 and 2013 were our worst years and we’ve always kept people in propane,” Demmer says, “but this year it certainly is not going to be the case.”  State Senator Dan Zumbach, is also a farmer and says the propane supply is there – it’s just hard to keep up with the demand.)”Yeah it’s discouraging for a lot of folks and you have to keep it in perspective and keep your head on straight. You know it is not our suppliers problem. It is not anyone’s real fault,” Zumbach says. “But what is going on and what created the situation is — we have a huge supply of L-P — but we are using the L-P so fast with today’s modern combines, with today’s modern driers and with the late crop, everyone in the midwest want’s L-P and everyone is consuming it.”

Wet grain has to be dried or it can spoil in the storage bins and become useless. “It’s a very real problem and it’s going to slow harvest down tremendously, because you have to dry the crop as you’re harvesting and it may very cut that rate by half. And that is concerning for a lot of farmers,” Zumbach says. ” I am sweating it out myself — but am willing to take my turn so that suppliers can spread that out the best they can.”  Zumbach says there’s not much more that can be done to speed up the process. “People just have to be patient and realize it’s not your driver’s fault. It’s not your suppliers fault — it’s just a huge demand. The state of Iowa did everything they can to allow drivers to deliver as quickly and as long hours as is safe,” Zumbach says.

The harvest has been running way behind normal and wet weather has also kept crops from drying in the fields.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Harrison Butker matched a career long with a 54-yard field goal to tie the game in the fourth quarter, then drilled a 44-yarder as time expired to give the Chiefs a heart-stopping 26-23 victory over the Vikings on Sunday. The first person to greet Butker in celebration was Patrick Mahomes, who missed his second straight game with a knee injury. Matt Moore started in his place and threw for 275 yards and a score.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — After knocking off then-No. 5 Oklahoma in a game far more lopsided than the 48-41 final score, Kansas State romped to a 38-10 victory over rival Kansas on Saturday. And that score also was not indicative of the way the Wildcats manhandled their neighbors just down Interstate 70. It served notice to the Big 12, and perhaps the nation, that new coach Chris Klieman’s team is on the rise.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have declined their half of Alex Gordon’s $23 million mutual option for 2020, allowing the outfielder to become a free agent. Gordon had exercised his part of the option. He will receive a $4 million buyout, completing a $72 million, four-year contract. A three-time All-Star and seven-time Gold Glove winner, Gordon helped the Royals win the 2015 World Series for their first title since 1985. He batted .266 this year with 13 homers and 76 RBIs for the rebuilding Royals.
