Sports

December 20th, 2022 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior Filip Rebraca has been named Big Ten Men’s Basketball Player of the Week. The announcement was made on Monday by the Big Ten Conference.

Rebraca (6-foot-9, 230 pounds) had a career performance in lifting the Hawkeyes to a 106-75 triumph over Southeast Missouri State last Saturday evening in Iowa City. Rebraca registered personal bests in points (30) and assists (6), while also grabbing a game-best nine rebounds, and collecting one steal and a block. Rebraca missed only one field goal attempt (12-of-13).

The native of Sombor, Serbia, has been playing at an elite level this season. Over the last three games, Rebraca is averaging team bests in points (20.7), rebounds (9.3), assists (4.7), and blocks (1.7). He is shooting a staggering 80.6 percent (25-of-31) from the field during that span.

Rebraca is the second Hawkeye to earn Big Ten weekly honors this season; Kris Murray was named Big Ten Co-Player of the Week on Dec. 6.

Iowa (8-3) will close out nonconference play on Wednesday against Eastern Illinois (3-9). Tipoff is scheduled for 7:01 p.m. on Mediacom Court at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Iowa State’s Fritz named Big 12 Freshman of the Week

Sports

December 20th, 2022 by admin

AMES, Iowa – A career-best game for Deane Fritz got her the honors for Big 12 Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon. The honor is the first of Fritz’s career from the Big 12.

Against then-No. 25 Villanova on Sunday at the Invesco QQQ Basketball Hall of Fame Women’s Showcase, Fritz recorded a career-best 13 points, which included a 3-of-3 shooting effort from 3-point range. She also contributed to the ISU effort with a pair of rebounds in her 31 minutes of action.

Fritz took a medical redshirt after an injury ended her first season in Ames after only three games last year. Her redshirt freshman season has seen her start all 10 games for No. 14 Iowa State this season, averaging 7.4 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. She has scored in double figures three times and opened the season by grabbing a career-best 10 rebounds against Cleveland State on Nov. 7.

Pair of Iowa State basketball games cancelled due to winter storm

Sports

December 20th, 2022 by admin

Ames, Iowa – With a winter storm watch for Central Iowa in effect from Wednesday evening through late Friday, Iowa State’s Dec. 21 men’s basketball game vs. Omaha and its Dec. 22 women’s basketball game vs. Drake have been cancelled due to potential severe weather conditions, and will not be made up, the Cyclone Athletics Department announced Tuesday morning.

“After consulting with both Omaha and Drake, we believe that cancelling both games today will afford the student-athletes from all four teams the opportunity to depart ahead of the storm and return safely to their homes to spend the holidays with their families,” Iowa State Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said.

Fans who had purchased single-game tickets for either game will be issued a refund by the ISU Athletics Ticket Office.

With the cancellations, the Cyclone basketball teams will break for the holidays before opening their 18-game Big 12 slates on Dec. 31. The Iowa State men will host No. 12 Baylor at 1 p.m. on ESPNU, while the 14th-ranked Cyclone women’s team will travel to Texas Tech for a 2 p.m. contest on ESPN+.

IHSAA Board of Control approves four classes for soccer this spring

Sports

December 20th, 2022 by admin

Soccer will become the fifth IHSAA sport to have four classifications as the Board of Control approved the addition of Class 4A ahead of the upcoming 2023 spring season.

The two-time recommendation from the soccer advisory committee passed to create classifications with fewer schools and closer enrollment totals for a sport that has shown consistent growth since becoming an IHSAA sanctioned sport in 1994-95.

In 2022, IHSAA soccer featured 172 participating teams across three classes: 48 in Class 3A, 56 in Class 2A, and 68 in Class 1A. The sport debuted in 1994-95 with 79 schools, added a second class in 1998, and added a third class in 2009 with 143 schools.

Soccer had featured over 6,000 boys’ participants for six consecutive springs prior to the pandemic-cancelled 2020 season. Other sports with four classifications include: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, and track and field.

For 2023, IHSAA soccer will feature:

  • Class 4A: Largest 36 schools
  • Class 3A: Next 40 schools
  • Class 2A: Next 48 schools
  • Class 1A: Remaining schools

Postseason schedules and assignments were also recommended for an adjustment by the advisory committee, which will be installed alongside the new classification.

Similar to basketball in 2022-23, soccer will receive substate brackets closer to the postseason, currently planned for the week of May 8 (NFHS calendar Week 45). The substate assignments and pairings separately released in previous years will be bumped in favor a later bracket, which will allow more regular season contests to factor into postseason seedings and matchups.

2023 Postseason Schedule

  • Monday, May 15: Class 2A and Class 1A, substate first round
  • Tuesday, May 16: Class 4A and Class 3A, substate first round
  • Monday, May 22: All classes, substate second round
  • Wednesday, May 24: All classes, substate final
  • Tuesday, May 30: All classes, quarterfinals
  • Thursday, June 1: All classes, semifinals
  • Saturday, June 3: All classes, finals
