GENEVIEVE (Wendt, Conner) BISHOP, 96, of Lenexa, KS (& formerly of Audubon), died Sunday, Feb. 9th, at the Greenwood Terrace Retirement Community, in Lenexa. Celebration of Life Memorial services for GENEVIEVE BISHOP will be held 11-a.m. Sat., Feb. 15th, in the Ross Calvary United Methodist Church (In Ross, IA). Kessler Funeral Home in Audubon has the arrangements.

A Family visitation will take place from 9:30-a.m. until the time of service, Saturday, at the church.

Burial will be held at a later date.

Her 103-year old brother – Ervin Wendt, of San Diego, CA.

many grandchildren and great grandchildren, many Bishop, Wendt and Tessman family members.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State will finish the basketball season without star guard Tyrese Haliburton. Coach Steve Prohm says Haliburton fractured his left wrist in the Cyclones’ win over Kansas State on Saturday. Haliburton was the team’s second-leading scorer and the Big 12 leader in assists and steals. The sophomore is considered a potential lottery pick in the NBA draft this year. Haliburton was hurt as he blocked a shot late in the first half.

FOREST CITY, Iowa (AP) — A former professional football player has been sentenced for being drunk and armed with a handgun at a county supervisors meeting in Iowa. Sixty-three-year-old Mike Stensrud was sentenced Friday to two years’ probation and 90 days of jail time, but 88 days were suspended. Stensrud is a Winnebago County supervisor. He drank alcohol from a cup during a May 21 meeting in Forest City. Court records say a breath test showed his blood alcohol level was above the legal limit for driving. An officer found a pistol in one of Stensrud’s pockets. Stensrud played at Iowa State before going pro. He retired from the NFL in 1989.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Items from what became known as “The Pine Tar Game” between the Royals and Yankees will be sold by Heritage Auctions later this month. The highlight will be the jersey worn by George Brett that is expected to fetch more than $100,000. The bat, which now resides at the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York.

UNDATED (AP) — Baylor remains atop The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll in a week that saw preseason No. 1 Michigan State fall out. The Bears received 48 of 64 first-place votes from a media panel to stay at No. 1 for the fourth straight week. No. 2 Gonzaga had 15 first-place votes and No. 3 Kansas got one. San Diego State and Louisville rounded out the top five. Seton Hall was the only change among the top 10 after moving up two spots to No. 10. Michigan State dropped out of the rankings from No. 16 following a three-game losing streak.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Bernie Sanders’ and Pete Buttigieg’s presidential campaigns have filed requests for a partial recanvass of the results of Iowa’s Democratic caucuses. In its Monday filing, the Sanders campaign cited “mathematical errors and inconsistencies” in more than two dozen caucus locations that it says would change the results if amended. The Iowa Democratic Party says the Buttigieg campaign requested a check on results in 66 precincts. Current results show Buttigieg with a razor-thin lead over Sanders in state delegate equivalents, and the party has awarded Buttigieg 14 delegates to Sanders’ 12. But the Sanders campaign believes correcting faulty math could swing the delegate allocation in Sanders’ favor.

UNDATED (AP) — On the eve of the New Hampshire primary, there was still no winner of last week’s Iowa caucuses. Final results of the Democratic caucus were released late Sunday, after the Iowa Democratic Party made a series of corrections to its tally. That’s not the end of the count, however, as Bernie Sanders and Pete Buttigieg exercised their right Monday to ask the state party to take another look at its reporting of the results. Amid the delays in getting the data and after observing irregularities in the results, The Associated Press says it cannot declare a winner in the first event to decide the Democratic nominee.

CLIVE, Iowa (AP) — A former Iowa governor and U.S. agriculture secretary has claimed a $150,000 Powerball prize. Tom Vilsack picked up winnings Monday at the Iowa Lottery’s headquarters in Clive. His ticket matched the Jan. 22 Powerball number and four of the remaining five numbers. He just missed out on the estimated $347 million jackpot. He’d bought the ticket at a grocery store in Waukee, a Des Moines suburb where he and his wife live. He’s now president and CEO of the U.S. Dairy Export Council. He told lottery officials his church and his children will share in his winnings.

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Deere & Co. plans to lay off 105 more workers in Dubuque. The company told workers Friday at the John Deere Dubuque Works that the layoffs will take effect April 6. It would be the third round of layoffs at the plant in the past few months. In October the company said more than 110 workers would be laid off by Nov. 18. In December the company announced that nearly 60 workers would be laid off effective Jan. 6.

Harlan boys dominate Atlantic

The Harlan boys basketball team pounced early on Atlantic and ran away with a 71-41 victory on Monday night. The Cyclones opened the game on an 8-0 run and led 25-3 by the end of the first quarter. Harlan was ahead 36-12 by the end of the half and 59-21 after three quarters.

Connor Bruck led the way for the Cyclones with 18 points, including four makes from beyond the arc. Bruck set the tempo early and dropped in 10 in the opening period. Three other players finished in double figures for the Cyclones; Michael Heithoff 12, Will McLaughlin 11, and Johnathan Monson 10.

Harlan improves to 13-5 on the season and will host Creston on Friday.

Atlantic falls to 7-10 on the season and will take on Maryville, MO on Thursday night in Atlantic. The Trojans and Cyclones meet again in Atlantic in a week for a make-up game from a weather postponement.

Harlan girls pour in twelve 3’s in rout of Atlantic

The Harlan girls basketball team ripped up the nets from downtown and scorched past Atlantic 73-51 on Monday night. The Cyclones poured in twelve 3’s on the night, taking advantage of Atlantic’s zone defense.

The Cyclones took control of the game at the end of the first quarter with an 8-0 run to end the period and push a four point lead out to 12. Harlan would extend the lead to 22 by halftime.

Macie Leinen led the way with 17 points on the night. Jocelyn Cheek added 15 and Brecken Van Baale dropped in 14. Van Baale hit three from downtown in the second quarter and was fouled on a three right before the end of the half. She converted all three free throws to finish with 12 in the opening half.

The Cyclones improved to 12-9 on the season. They now await the Class 4A pairings for postseason play starting on the 19th.

Atlantic was led by 18 points from McKenzie waters and 16 from Haley Rasmussen. The Trojans end the regular season at 8-13. The Trojans host Clarinda on Saturday for their opening Class 3A playoff game. We’ll have that game on KJAN with pregame at 7:15 p.m. and tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.

Bill would get rid of ‘gun free’ zones in public buildings

(Radio Iowa) — A bill introduced in the Iowa House would forbid most Iowa school districts, cities and counties from banning guns in public buildings. Gun bans could only be enforced in public buildings that screen the public at entry points and have armed security officers inside. Representative Steven Holt, a Republican from Denison, is a key advocate for the bill.

“I happen to believe that ‘gun free zones’ is an invitation to crazy people, an invitation to sick people because nobody that has ever done a mass shooting has ever obeyed the law,” Hotl says, “because it is illegal to kill people.” A gun ban makes a public place a “shooting gallery” according to Holt.

“How does anybody believe a sign is going to stop a sick individual who has decided to murder innocent people?” Holt asked. “What it will do is stop law-abiding citizens from carrying their firearms into that situation, so this is — as far as I’m concerned — about the health and safety of all Iowans.” Scott Peterson, interim executive director of Iowans for Gun Safety, says it takes training to assess an active shooter situation.

“Law enforcement and military…if there’s a shooting or a hot situation, the last thing they want is for people to start pulling out guns and shooting,” he says. Seventeen-year-old Ellie Miglin, a student at Des Moines Roosevelt High School, says because of school shootings, her generation supports enhancing rather than relaxing gun regulations.

“Why aren’t we doing more to reflect on how our society has changed?” she asks. Miglin and Peterson spoke at a statehouse event arranged by the “We Can End Gun Violence Iowa Coalition.”

Armed robbery incident in Council Bluffs/Omaha metro Monday afternoon

Authorities in Council Bluffs and Omaha are on the lookout for a white male about 20-to 30+ years of age, who was involved in armed robbery incidents Monday afternoon. Council Bluffs Police say Tractor Supply Company (329 Veterans Memorial Hwy) employees reported a theft of merchandise (with the suspect seen in the picture below).

The suspect attempted to flee the store and enter a gray Dodge Ram pickup. Employees attempted to stop the male suspect when he displayed a handgun. The suspect fled the scene in the pickup truck southbound on Piute Street. As officers were responding, a report of a carjacking at Heartland Christian School was received. The adult male victim was told by the suspect that he had gotten jumped and needed a ride. The victim stated that he couldn’t because he was picking up his children. The suspect then displayed a handgun and fled in the victim’s 2008 Chevy Suburban.

The Suburban was located fleeing westbound on Veterans Highway at S. 24th, then north on 24th Street to I‐80 Westbound. Officers caught up to the Suburban and initiated a pursuit when the driver refused to stop. Officers continued to pursue the vehicle to the area of South 10th Street, where they lost sight of the Suburban. The driver had abandoned the vehicle at 2740 S. 9th Street.

Omaha Police assisted in searching for the suspect with helicopter “Able 1,” and K9 units. The suspect remains at large as of the latest report. He is to be considered armed and dangerous. If you see the suspect, call Council Bluffs Crime Stoppers at 1-712-328-STOP. None of the victims were injured during the robberies.

Drake’s Hittner named MVC Player of the Week

Drake’s Becca Hittner averaged 27.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game, while shooting 58.3% from the field and 69.2% from three as the Bulldogs split the weekend with Southern Illinois and Missouri State, earning her first MVC Player of the Week honor of the season and seventh of her career.

Senior Becca Hittner posted impressive numbers this past weekend in helping Drake split pair of home games. Hittner averaged 27.0 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.0 block per game while shooting blistering 58.3 percent (14-of-24), 69.2 percent (9-of-13) from beyond the arc and made 17-of-18 (94.4 percent) at the free throw line. In the win over Southern Illinois, she poured in a game-high 31 points, including making a career-high seven three pointers and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds to go with five assists. Hittner followed in the loss to No. 24/19 Missouri State with 23 points, eight rebounds and three assists. Her nine three-pointers on the weekend helped her move all the way to No. 2 all-time in school history with 241 career threes.
