ROSEMARY DREES, 89, of Manning, died Sat. Jan. 25th, at Accura Healthcare of Manning. A Mass of Christian Burial for ROSEMARY DREES will be held 10:30-a.m. Friday, Jan. 31st, at the Sacred Heart Church in Manning. Ohde Funeral Home in Manning has the arrangements.

Friends may call at the Sacred Heart Church in Manning, on Friday, from 9-until 10-a.m., with a Rosary at 10-a.m.

Burial is in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Manning.

ROSEMARY DREES is survived by:

Her sons – Gary (Julie) Drees, and Matt (Jennifer) Drees, all of Sloan; and Mark (Karen) Drees, of Medford, OK.

Her daughters – Anna (Paul) Weber, of Ames; Mary (Eric) Echterling, of Dallas Center, & Madonna (Gary) Gardner, of Lancaster, TX.

Her brother – Lawrence (Betty) Higgins, of Omaha.

Her sister – Monica (Ed) Smith, of Ft. Calhoun, NE.

and several grandchildren.

Des Moines couple reports dog fought coyote in backyard

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – State wildlife officials are urging central Iowa residents to be vigilant in safeguarding pets after a Des Moines couple reported their German shepherd mix dog was attacked by a coyote. Television station KCCI reports that the couple reported the attacked happened Thursday night less than a mile from the Drake University campus after they let their dog, Sildi, out in the backyard around dusk.

Within minutes, they heard what sounded like a dog fight, rushed outside and found Sildi and the coyote fighting. The coyote ran away when the couple came outside. The dog was treated for bite wounds to its face and head.

Iowa man arrested in Minnesota on vehicular homicide warrant

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) – A Dubuque man has been arrested in Minnesota on a vehicular homicide charge related to a fatal motorcycle crash in August. The Telegraph Herald reports that 40-year-old Shannon Katka was recently arrested in Albert Lea, Minnesota, on a warrant charging him with vehicular homicide while operating under the influence.

Police say Katka was driving the motorcycle the night of Aug. 29 in Dubuque when he lost control on a highway entrance ramp and crashed. His passenger, 43-year-old Shelly Brenke, was thrown from the bike and died at the scene. Police say Katka’s blood alcohol level above the legal limit to drive at the time of the crash.

Harlan finished in a tie for second with 134 points. Ethan Lemon and Carter Bendorf were champs at 126 and 170 respectively. Nathan Henry was runner-up at 195.

@ LOUISVILLE

Underwood scored 264 to win the team title. Niles Solazzo (113), Stevie Barnes (120), Nick Stephens (126), Zane Ziegler (132) and Nick Hamilton (145) claimed titles for the Eagles. AHSTW was second with 195 points. Jaedan Rasmussen (152) and Gavyn Fischer (195) took individual titles.

Glenwood finished 19th at the Ed Winger Classic. Dalton Book was the top finisher for the Rams, taking 7th at 152 pounds.

@ HEELAN

Logan-Magnolia finished second in the team standings. The Panthers scored 183 points and had three champions Hagen Heistand (120), Wyatt Reisz (126) and Rex Johnsen (220). Lewis Central finished fourth behind runner-up finishes from Taber Dominguez (126), Tanner Higgins (145) and Jake Lear (152).

@ INTERSTATE 35

Kuemper Catholic finished ninth as a team. Benjamin Schmitz and Shea Parkis paced the Knights with runner-ups at 120 and 138.

@ COLFAX MINGO DUALS

Treynor finished dual action 4-1. The Cardinals beat Des Mones, Hoover (48-20), Newton (60-6), HLV-Victor (51-18) and Pleasantville (42-40). Their lone loss was a 45-24 loss to Colfax-Mingo.

CB Araham Lincoln finished 3-2. The Lynx beat Hoover (53-21), Lynnville-Sully (59-18) and North Mahaska (51-15). They lost to Pleasantville (42-35) and Knoxville (54-30).

Coon Rapids-Bayard went 0-4 with losses to Alta-Aurelia, Eagle Grove, Manson-Northwest Webster, West Monona.

4 Missouri River states unite to try to limit flooding

LINCOLN, Neb (AP) – Four states along the Missouri River are joining forces to look for ways to avoid the kind of flooding that caused millions of dollars in damage last year. Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and Kansas are pooling their money to pay for half of a $400,000 study with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to measure how much water flows down the Missouri River. State officials hope to present a united front to federal officials to gain more influence over how the river is managed after devastating floods in 2011 and 2019.

Single-vehicle accident

Anita Fire and Rescue were called to the scene of a single-vehicle accident with entrapment this (Sunday) morning, northeast of Anita. The dispatch went out a little after 1-a.m. Officials at the time, said the accident happened at 760th Street and White Pole Road, on 760th.

It’s believed a man and a woman were in the vehicle, and that alcohol may have played a role in the accident, but a dispatcher at the Cass County Communications Center was not able to release any information or details about the crash when contacted early this (Sunday) morning.

UNDATED (AP) — Isaac Okoro scored 19 points, Samir Doughty scored 18 and No. 16 Auburn held off Iowa State 80-76 in the opening game of the Big 12/SEC Challenge. The Tigers improved to 17-2. Auburn led by 14 points with under six minutes left before the Cyclones rallied. Rasir Bolton had 23 points for Iowa State, which fell to 9-10.

PISCATAWAY, NJ (AP) — Geo Baker hit a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left to lift No. 24 Rutgers to a 75-72 victory over Nebraska. Rutgers improved to 14-0 at home. The Scarlet Knights had four double-digit scorers Saturday. Akwaski Yeboah led the way with 20 points while Caleb McConnell and Jacob Young each had 12 points and Montez Mathis had 10. Nebraska was led by Cam Mack with 19 points while Thorir Thorbjarnarson had 17.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — JT Gibson hit five 3-pointers and scored 23 points, Matt Pile added a double-double and Omaha slipped past Purdue Fort Wayne 75-71. Gibson sank 8 of 16 shots from the floor, including 5 of 11 from beyond the arc, for the Mavericks (12-10, 5-2 Summit League). Jarred Godfrey scored 24 points to lead Purdue Fort Wayne (9-13, 2-5). He added five assists, four rebounds and four steals.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Devon Dotson scored 22 points, Udoka Azubuike added 18 and No. 3 Kansas beat Tennessee 74-68 in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. Azubuike was the lone big man for the Jayhawks after Silvio De Sousa was suspended 12 games and David McCormack banned two for their roles in a brawl Tuesday against Kansas State. Azubuike overcame early foul trouble to finish with 11 rebounds and four blocks. Yves Pons led the Volunteers with 24 points

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Jermaine Haley had 15 points and nine rebounds, Miles McBride scored 15 points and No. 14 West Virginia beat Missouri 74-51 in the Big 12/SEC Challenge. West Virginia’s Bob Huggins earned his 876th win to tie Adolph Rupp for seventh place all-time on the NCAA Division I coaching list. Oscar Tshiebwe added 14 pounds and eight rebounds, Gabe Osabuohien grabbed 12 rebounds and Derek Culver had 11 rebounds for the Mountaineers. Torrence Watson scored 19 points to lead Missouri. The Tigers were held to 28% shooting from the field.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Kira Lewis Jr. scored 26 points and Alabama earned another win for the SEC in the SEC/Big 12 challenge, beating Kansas State 77-74. A 14-0 Alabama run in the second half extended the lead to 16 for the Crimson Tide, but the Wildcats responded with a 15-2 run eventually cut the deficit to one. Lewis made back-to-back baskets on the next two Alabama possessions, and Alabama never relinquished the lead. All five starters for Alabama finished in double figures. Cartier Diarra led the Wildcats with 17 points.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Dexter Dennis had 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead five Wichita State players in double figures as the Shockers defeated Central Florida 87-79. Grant Sherfield and Jaime Echenique added 14 points apiece for the Shockers. Erik Stevenson chipped in 11 points, and Trey Wade had 10. Darin Green Jr. led the Knights with 18 points.
