Girls State Wrestling Brackets Announced

The First-ever Iowa Girls State Wrestling Tournament will be held this Thursday, February 2nd and Friday, February 3rd at the XStream Arena in Coralville.  The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union has released the brackets for the single-class tourney.  We’ll have live updates from the tournament both days on KJAN and live updated results for area wrestlers on the Sports page here at KJAN.com!

Iowa beats Rutgers 93-82

Iowa closed the opening half with a 16-5 run and beat Rutgers 93-82 in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes fought off a second half rally that saw the Scarlet Knights trim a 13-point Hawkeye lead to one.

That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery who says the Hawkeyes did a better job of taking care of the basketball.

Junior forward Patrick McCaffery saw his first action in nearly a month after stepping away to deal with anxiety. He hit a trio of three pointers and finished with nine points.

It was McCaffery’s first game since a New Year’s Day loss at Penn State.

The Hawkeyes host Northwestern Tuesday night.

Shorthanded Drake rolls at MVC co-leader Belmont

Drake stepped up big on the road. With leading scorer Tucker DeVries hospitalized with an elbow infection the Bulldogs hammered Missouri Valley co-leader Belmont 79-61. The Bulldogs improve to 8-4 in the Valley.

That’s Drake coach Darian DeVries. Known for its three point shooting, Belmont was just one of 16 from behind the arc.

Roman Penn and Garret Sturtz each had 16 poiuts for the Bulldogs. Sturtz added six rebounds and became the school’s all-time leading rebounder, despite being only six-three.

Sturtz is a native of Newton who began his Bulldog career as a walk-on.

Iowa State visits Texas Tech Monday night

It is a quick turnaround for Iowa State as the Cyclones visit Texas Tech on Monday night in Big 12 play. The Cyclones are coming off a 78-61 loss at Missouri in the Big 12/SEC Challenge and were without senior guard Caleb Grill due to a back injury.

That’s ISU coach T.J. Otzelberger who says Grill’s availability is day-to-day.

Iowa State hammered the Red Raiders 84-50 in Ames back on January 10th.

UNI women pick up road win over Southern Illinois

The UNI women’s basketball team picked up a 94-81 win over Southern Illinois in Carbondale on Saturday. The Panthers led by 6 at halftime and then outscored the Salukis 24-16 in the third quarter to pull away.

UNI had three players break the 20-point mark in the game led by 26 from Emerson Green. Grace Boffeli had 24 points and 10 rebounds, and Maya McDermott poured in 21 points.

UNI improved to 13-6 overall and 8-2 in the Valley. Next up for the Panthers is a home game against Drake on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.

Iowa ladies beat Nebraska

No. 10 Iowa beat Nebraska for the seventh straight time, 80-76, inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Saturday afternoon. All-American Caitlin Clark registered her 36th career double-double with 33 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists. Clark has notched a double-double in her fifth straight game.

The Hawkeyes outscored the Huskers 26-9 in the second quarter to grab an 11-point lead at Halftime. The Hawkeyes then held on despite being outscored by 13 in the fourth quarter.

The Hawkeyes improved to 17-4 overall and 9=1 in the Big Ten.

The Hawkeyes are set to host nationally ranked Maryland on Feb. 2. Tip-off in Iowa City is set for 7:30 p.m. (CT) inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Mediacom Court. The game will broadcast on ESPN2, Sirius XM and the Hawkeye Radio Network.

Drake women fall at Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Drake women’s basketball battled the Missouri State Bears, two of the nations’ premier rebounding teams, in a physical MVC contest this afternoon. Missouri State held off a second-half charge by the Bulldogs in a 64-54 contest.

Maggie Bair led the Bulldogs with 20 points, her third 20-point performance of the season. Grace Berg added 14 points and led Drake on the glass with eight rebounds. Katie Dinnebier had another solid game running the Bulldog offense with six assists.

Drake falls to 12-6 overall and 7-3 in the Valley. The Bulldogs will conclude their three-game road swing with a mid-week rivalry matchup at UNI. The Bulldogs and Panthers will conclude their regular season series on Wednesday, Feb. 1 in Cedar Falls.

Mizzou clobbers Iowa State in Columbia

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) Despite Jaren Holmes and Gabe Kalscheur scoring 33 combined points, the Missouri Tigers beat No. 12 Iowa State 78-61 in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge on Saturday.

Holmes led Iowa State (15-5) with 19 points, and Gabe Kalscheur added 14.

Missouri made 47% of its 30 3-point attempts, while Iowa State shot 38% from long range. Iowa State outrebounded Missouri 38-25, but the Tigers negated the advantage on the glass by scoring 20 points off nine Cyclones turnovers.

The Tigers’ 78 points were a season-high for an Iowa State opponent in regulation; the Cyclones are 0-3 this season when allowing at least 70 points in regulation.

Holmes hit a 3 with 9:22 remaining in the first half to give Iowa State a 21-20 lead. Isiaih Mosley followed with a 3 of his own just eight seconds later to give Missouri the lead for good.

Iowa State will travel to Lubbock to face Texas Tech on Monday night. Tipoff between the Cyclones and Red Raiders is set for 8 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN2.

Iowa State ladies take down Oklahoma

AMES, Iowa – No. 18 Iowa State (15-4, 7-2 Big 12) defeated No. 14 Oklahoma (16-4, 6-3 Big 12) Saturday evening in Hilton Coliseum by a final tally of 86-78. The Cyclones earned their fourth-straight Big 12 Conference victory in a shootout win over the Sooners.

Iowa State shot 42 percent from the field and made six threes to eclipse the Sooners in the Big 12 standings. The Cyclone defense continued to shine, forcing 11 Oklahoma turnovers and holding them to under 40 percent shooting.

With a final tally of 32 points, Ashley Joens surpassed Oklahoma’s Courtney Paris (2006-09) for third-most points in Big 12 history. Joens recorded her second 30-point performance of the season and finished with seven rebounds.

Four other Cyclones concluded the contest in double figures. Lexi Donarski finished second on the team after a 15-point night. Emily Ryan and Denae Fritz both ended with 14 points.

Ryan tagged on eight assists and seven rebounds to her final line. Morgan Kane rounded out the team’s scorers with 11 points and nine rebounds.
