IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa Track and Field qualified seven student-athletes to the NCAA Indoor Championships in Boston, Massachusetts, on March 8-9.

Three-time indoor All-American Austin West has qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships for the fourth consecutive year. Fellow senior and two-time indoor All-American Grant Conway is making his third appearance at the championships.

Seniors Paige Magee, Tionna Tobias and Kalen Walker, along with junior Rivaldo Marshall and freshman Daniela Wamokpego are making their first NCAA DI Indoor Championship appearances of their career.

West, a multi-event specialist from Iowa City, Iowa, was the Big Ten’s runner-up in the heptathlon on Feb. 24, tallying a lifetime-best 5,975 points. His new career high ranks second at Iowa. West has earned second-team All-America honors three times, improving from 13th in 2021 to 10th in 2022 to 9th in 2023.

Conway, a hurdler from St. James, Missouri, qualified with a personal-best 7.66 at the Big Ten Championships on Feb. 24. The mark ranks fourth in program history. He ultimately finished fifth at the conference meet. A two-time second team All-American, Conway made his first appearance in 2022, placing 15th with a 7.84. Last season, Conway improved to 12th in 7.83.

Magee, a native of Columbia, Missouri, is Iowa’s school record holder in the 60-meter hurdles and is making her NCAA Indoor Championships debut. Magee clocked the program’s first sub-8.00 time at the Big Ten Championships on her way to a runner-up finish on Feb. 24. She enters the NCAA meet as the six seed. Magee is a two-time Big Ten Women’s Track Athlete of the Week honoree in 2024.

Tobias, a senior from Sicklerville, New Jersey, qualified in the long jump following a 6.41-meter (12’ 0.5”) mark at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic on Feb. 2. Tobias is within one-hundredth of the school record. Among 57 competitors, Tobias placed fifth in Albuquerque.

Walker, a sprinter from Eddyville, Iowa, is the program’s school-record holder in the 60-meter dash, clocking a 6.51 in the preliminary round at the Big Ten Championships. He is the Big Ten’s runner-up in the event and enters the NCAA meet ranked third in the nation. Walker is a two-time conference Men’s Track Athlete of the Week.

Marshall, a junior newcomer from Indian Hills CC, was the 2023 NJCAA 800-meter champion with a 1:50.56. The Kingston, Jamaica, native avenged a second-place finish in 2022. Marshall set Iowa’s school record with a personal-best 1:46.86 at the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas, on Feb. 10. Following his 1:47.83 finish at the Jimmy Grant Invitational on Dec. 9, Marshall was named the DI Men’s National Athlete of the Week by the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. It was Marshall’s first National Athlete of the Week honor as a Hawkeye and fourth of his career. The award also marked the first ever indoor National Athlete of the Week honor for the Iowa men’s program.

Wamokpego, a triple jump specialist from Meaux, France, broke Iowa’s school record at the Tyson Invitational on Feb. 10, leaping 13.24 meters (43’ 5.25”). She finished fifth in her Big Ten Championships debut. Wamokpego was named the Big Ten’s Women’s Field Athlete of the Week on Dec. 13 and Feb. 14.

The NCAA DI Indoor Track & Field Championships begin on Friday, March 8th, at 8:30 a.m. (CT) and will air on the ESPN family of networks.

IOWA CITY, IOWA – The University of Iowa baseball team defeated Northern Illinois, 14-6, on Tuesday evening at Duane Banks Field.

“I thought offensively it was a great day for us,” said head coach Rick Heller. “Up and down the lineup. Scored runs early, scored runs throughout the game, and answered with runs every time they scored. That was great to see, even after the weather shifted.”

The Hawkeyes got out to a fast start scoring five runs in the first including a pair for two-run home runs. Iowa added two runs in the second and a run in the third.

The Huskies tallied three runs in the fifth, but the Hawkeyes responded with four runs in the bottom half. The teams traded runs in the seventh, and Northern Illinois scored two runs in the eighth top half of the eight while Iowa added an insurance run in the bottom half.

“We had way too many free bases,” said Heller. “Gave up runs in the seventh and the eighth, which we can’t do. Walking lead off guys and nine hole three times, stuff that is not sustainable and has to change. Defense was sloppy, had a couple errors on the infield that could have hurt if we weren’t scoring, but we were so we will take it.”

Justin Hackett started for the Hawkeyes throwing 1/3 of an inning, before Jack Young entered throwing 1 1/3 innings of relief to earn the win. Young struck out three.

In total 10 different pitchers saw action for the Hawkeyes striking out 13 Huskies while walking 10 Northern Illinois batters. Aaron Savary, Drew Deremer, and Gannon Archer each struck out two.

Sam Petersen was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Raider Tello was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, Blake Guerin was 2-for-4 with two double and Reese Moore was 3-for-4 with an RBI, scored two runs and two doubles.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Junior forward Anna Miller became the third different Drake player to take home the MVC Player of the Week award this season, the league announced this afternoon.

Miller averaged a double-double of 20.0 points and 15.5 rebounds to go along with four blocks as Drake swept a pivotal weekly slate. In Thursday’s win over Missouri State, Miller scored 19 points and grabbed 12 rebounds while dishing out two assists. She topped that performance on Sunday with a 21-point, 19-rebound effort in a thrilling win over UNI. 11 of her boards against the Panthers came in a massive second half.

Her lines were good enough for her 11th and 12th double-doubles of the season. She has also logged nine double-doubles in MVC play this year.

The Rochester, Minn. native is one of four Bulldogs to average double-digit points and leads the entire conference with 9.9 rebounds per game and 2.8 blocks per game.

Miller and the Bulldogs will conclude their home schedule this weekend with matchups against UIC on Feb. 29 and Valpo on Mar. 2. Drake will celebrate Senior Day following Saturday’s tilt with the Beacons.

The CAM Cougars had a very good season this year. The Cougars ended their season in the regional championship game against the Montezuma Bravettes 60-47 in Norwalk. The Cougars ended the season with a 21-3 overall record and 14-2 in the Rolling Valley Conference.

The Cougars were led in scoring by senior Eva Steffensen, who scored 492 points this season and averaged 21 points per game. Steffensen also ended her Cougars career with 1,387 career points.

The Cougars will be losing seven seniors to graduation this year: Eva Steffensen, Carley Dennis, Meredith Ritch, Emma Follman, Kiera Nichols, Irelyn Gundy and Payton LaPorte.

Cougars head coach Joe Wollum was selected for Class 1A West Central District and Class 1A Region 8 coach of the year. Wollum had to say about be selected for those awards.

Wollum also said it was great season for the Cougars.

Wollum talked about playing in a competitive Rolling Valley Conference this season.

Wollum commented about how tough it really is to get three Cougar girls on the All Region team this season.

Wollum said this senior class was sure fun to be around.

Wollum did say that there was going to be some Cougars girls basketball camps coming up in June, with dates yet to be determined.

Drake needs to win and get some help as the Bulldogs open the final week of the regular season at Illinois-Chicago Wednesday night. A 91-77 loss at Northern Iowa over the weekend dropped the Bulldogs a game behind Indiana State at 14-4 in the Missouri Valley standings. U-I-C is 4-14 in conference play and 11-18 overall.
