Grassley is ‘social distancing’ and did not talk with senator who has COVID-19

News

March 23rd, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — Both of Iowa’s Republican senators say they did not interact this past week with Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, who has tested positive for COVID-19. A spokesman for Senator Chuck Grassley says the senator’s doctor is NOT advising Grassley to be tested and he says Grassley, who is 86 years old, did not personally speak with Senator Paul this past week.

A spokesman for Senator Joni Ernst says she had no direct interaction with Senator Paul either. Statements from the offices of both Iowa Senators indicate Grassley and Ernst are practicing “social distancing” and minimizing interaction with others.

Earlier this month, Senator Rand Paul attended an event in Kentucky where other guests later tested positive for COVID-19. Paul says he had no symptoms, but took the test early last week. It came back positive Sunday afternoon — after Paul had attended Senate functions and even worked out in the Senate gym and swam in the pool early Sunday.

Here is the latest Iowa news from The Associated Press at 3:40 a.m. CDT

CHICAGO (AP) — America’s young people have grown up with school shootings, social media pressures, climate change and terror attacks. But the coronavirus pandemic could test a generation in ways they have never faced. One expert likens the impact to that of the Great Depression. As they’re being asked to study at home and distance socially to help their more vulnerable elders, how will they cope?

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa health officials have confirmed 22 new coronavirus cases in the state. The Iowa Department of Public Health said Sunday that the state now has 90 cases of COVID-19. Johnson County reported five new cases of COVID-19, and Tama County reported 3 new cases. The new virus cases include two new cases in each of the following counties: Cerro Gordo, Dubuque, and Harrison counties. The counties of Dallas, Kossuth, Linn, Poweshiek, Scott, Sioux, Washington and Woodbury counties each reported one new case of the disease. For most people, COVID-19 causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. For some, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Sioux City woman who schemed with her husband to illegally harbor a 17-year-old Guatemalan girl in what authorities have called a human trafficking case has been sentenced to a year in prison. The Sioux City Journal reports that 40-year-old Amy Francisco was sentenced Friday in Sioux City’s federal court. She pleaded guilty in November to the single count. Her husband, 38-year-old Cristobal Francisco-Nicolas, pleaded guilty in December to federal counts of smuggling and unlawful possession of identification documents. Prosecutors say Francisco-Nicolas helped smuggle the girl and her father from Guatemala to Sioux City. The girl was found wandering Sioux City streets last June and told police she had been repeatedly raped by Francisco-Nicolas before she escaped.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Police have made two arrests in a fatal January shooting in Cedar Rapids — including the arrest of a teen injured in the shooting. Cedar Rapids police say in a news release Saturday that a 17-year-old male was arrested Friday evening for the Jan. 24 shooting that killed 18-year-old Andrew Gaston and injured a 16-year-old boy with him. The 17-year-old was arrested on suspicion of voluntary manslaughter and other counts. The 16-year-old boy injured also was arrested on suspicion of robbery and other counts. Police say the shooting happened when Gaston, the 16-year-old and another person arranged to meet with the 17-year-old to buy marijuana, then ambushed the 17-year-old in a plot to rob him.

UI Hospital makes ‘urgent request’ for donated face shields

News

March 22nd, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has put out an urgent plea for donations of new OR used protective face shields for its employees. The hospital is in Johnson County, where 32 of the 90 Iowans confirmed to have COVID-19 live. Governor Kim Reynolds says the state has ordered protective gear for Iowa health care workers from private companies AND through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. A shipment is expected early this week.

“We’re dealing with a shortage all across the country and Iowa’s no exception,” Reynolds says. Iowa Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management director Joyce Flinn isn’t sure how many masks will be delivered to the state this week. “Things are changing so quickly, I know we put in an order, but I honestly don’t remember the quantities in that order,” Flinn says.

Medical supplies are being routed to health care providers in the 24 counties where COVID-19 cases have been confirmed, according to Flinn. She says the Iowa National Guard, the Iowa D-O-T and the Department of Public Safety all have a role in distribution. “As quickly as the product comes in, they determine where it’s going to go and it’s out the door as quickly as possible.”

Iowa hospitals have begun to delay elective surgeries – to conserve masks, gloves, gowns and other medical supplies. UnityPoint Hospital in Cedar Rapids — in preparation for shortages — is asking volunteers to sew fabric face masks.

DNR investigating drowning on Mississippi River

Ag/Outdoor, News

March 22nd, 2020 by Ric Hanson

GUTTENBERG, Iowa — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating a drowning that happened at around 1:30-p.m. Saturday, near the spillway of Lock and Dam #10 on the Mississippi River.

Officials say two men were fishing in a 14-foot flat boat in a restricted area near the low-head dam of Lock and Dam #10 when their boat was caught in a turbulent area and began taking on water. 54-year old Shaun Oppenheimer, of Quasqueton, was a passenger in the boat who went overboard, and drowned. His body was recovered and taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Neither Oppenheimer nor the operator of the boat were wearing personal flotation devices, although the boat did have them on-board.

The Iowa DNR continues to investigate the incident.

Assisting in handling the scene and investigation, was the Guttenberg Fire and Rescue, Guttenberg Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Clayton County Sheriff’s Office, Grant County, Wisconsin Fire and Rescue, Glen Haven, Wisconsin Fire and Rescue, and nearby fishermen providing quick access with their boats
