Sports

February 16th, 2023 by admin

Shots just wouldn’t fall and the Atlantic girls basketball team saw their breakout season come to an end with a 46-37 loss to Harlan in the Class 3A Region 5 Semifinals on Wednesday night.

The Trojans started the game well with a 6-0 run and led 8-5 at the end of the first. Harlan would rally for a four-point lead at halftime 19-14. The game turned in full favor of the Cyclones early in the fourth quarter. Atlantic had cut the Cyclones’ lead to 2 at 34-32 and then missed a couple of free throws. The Cyclones made a foul shot and then got a big three from Aubrey Schweiso. The following possession the Cyclones poked away a pass and Schweiso raced the other way for a layup, putting Harlan up 40-32. The Trojans wouldn’t get closer than 6 points the rest of the way. A

The Trojans got some of the looks they wanted throughout the night but just couldn’t get some big ones to fall. Atlantic was led by 20 points from sophomore Paytn Harter and 12 from senior Jada Jensen. Atlantic ends the season with a mark of 18-5. Coach Vargason was very proud of what they accomplished.

Harlan was led by 17 points from Schweiso and 13 from Ava Monson. The Cyclones improved to 14-7 on the season and will move on to the Regional Final on Saturday at Des Moines Christian.
