DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Des Moines has agreed to spend $75,000 to settle a lawsuit filed after an officer sprayed pepper spray at a 17-year-old girl and threw her to the ground at a downtown bus station. The City Council approved the settlement last week after it was accepted by attorneys representing Kimberly Williams and her children. Williams filed the lawsuit after a February 2018 incident at the downtown DART station, where Sgt. Greg Wessels and Williams’ teenager daughter began arguing after police tried to deal with a crowd of teenagers.

The Des Moines Register reports officers told the teens to leave but Williams’ daughter said she needed to catch her bus to go home. Wessels ultimately sprayed the teen with pepper spray and took her to the ground.

PELLA, Iowa – Officials with the Iowa DCI report that on Monday, May 18th, officers with the Pella Police Department responded at around 8:20-p.m., to reports of a domestic disturbance in the 100 block of Glenwood Street. Upon arrival, officers found an unresponsive adult female. Police performed lifesaving measures, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. The Pella Police Department and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Major Crime Unit are investigating this death as a homicide.

While no arrests have been made, law enforcement believes this to be an isolated incident with no threat to the public. Anyone with information concerning this investigation is asked to contact the Pella Police Department at 641-628-4921. The identity of the deceased female is being withheld pending notification of her family. Additional details will be released as they become available.

An autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death will be conducted by the Office of the State Medical Examiner.

The Cass County Communications Center said a missing Griswold girl has been located and returned home. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office was asking for the public’s help in locating Tawni Liddell, who had last been seen at her residence in Griswold, late May 17th or early May 18th. But again, authorities say she has been located and returned to her home. Additional details were not released.

Red Oak Police say two women suffered what were described as “suspected minor/non-incapacitating” injuries, following a collision over the Noon hour, Monday. The crash involving three vehicles occurred at the intersection of Highway 48 (Broadway St.) and W. Corning Street. The accident happened as a 2008 VW Jetta driven by 21-year old Alexis Wingfield, of Red Oak, was stopped at the intersection red light. A 2005 Buick LaCrosse SUV driven by 25-year old Richelle Chapin, of Carter Lake, was stopped behind the VW.

A 2013 Freightliner cargo truck owned by Popco, Inc. out of Boystown, NE. and driven by 48-year old Robert Reichart, of Plattesmouth, NE., was approaching both vehicles from behind, but was unable to stop before hitting the SUV. The impact pushed the Buick into Jetta. Chapin and Wingfield complained of pain afterward. Wingfield was transported by Red Oak Rescue to the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital for evaluation.  Chapin was transported to the hospital by private vehicle. All drivers were wearing their seat belts.

Police cited Reichart for Following too Close. Damage from the collisions amounted to $13,000.

The Trevor Frederickson Memorial Fund has announced the non-profit organization’s donation of $1,000 to the YMCA Partnership with Youth Campaign. Fund spokesperson Melanie Petty says the campaign raises funds for financial assistance programs at the YMCA.  The YMCA offers this support to qualifying youth and families to participate in multiple YMCA programs and membership. Petty says “It’s never to late to donate to the campaign and no amount is too small!”

Monies raised at the annual TFred Memorial Golf Tournament are donated through out the year to things that meant something to her son, Trevor, for whom the fund is named.  The next golf tournament will be held on Saturday, August 8th.  Plans are in the works and we are looking forward to another great day of golf, friendship and giving.

Police in Creston, Monday afternoon, arrested a woman wanted on a Union County warrant for Failure to Appear for fingerprinting, relating to an original charge of two counts of Assault on Persons of Certain Occupations. 24-year old Kaylee Nelson, of Creston, was later released from the Union County Jail on $100 bond.
