News

June 1st, 2020 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — State health officials today (Monday) report seven more COVID-19 related deaths have taken place since Sunday, for a total of 540 since the start of the coronavirus outbreak. The Iowa Department of Public Health said 19,690 Iowans have tested positive for COVID-19. The IDPH says also: 139, 174 Iowans have tested negative for COVID-19, to-date, and 11,272 have recovered. Across the State: 339 Iowans are hospitalized with COVID-19 (2 less than Sunday); 125 are in an ICU (up 9 from Sunday); 24 were admitted to hospitals over the past 24-hours (1 more than Sunday); and 73 were on ventilators (up 3 from Sunday).

The Region 4 Regional Medical Coordinator Center – covering hospitals in western/southwest Iowa – (RMCC) reports 16 Iowans are hospitalized, 8 are in an ICU, 1 was admitted over the past 24-hours, and 3 are on ventilators. Those numbers have changed little since Sunday, and there was little change in the number of area counties with positive COVID-19 cases reported and those who have recovered. (See https://coronavirus.iowa.gov/pages/case-counts for a breakdown of cases & the number recovered) The number of Long Term Care (LTC) facility outbreaks is unchanged, at 39. Five more people associated with those facilities have died, for a total of 255. The IDPH says 1,565 LTC patients/staff have tested positive, and 726 have recovered from COVID-19.

For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms that clear up in two to three weeks. For some infected people, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, the virus can cause severe illness and death.

Event in Atlantic Wed. evening to offer support for both law enforcement & the black community

News

June 1st, 2020 by Ric Hanson

An event 6-p.m. Wednesday in Atlantic at Sunnyside Park, will serve as an opportunity for the community to show its support of law enforcement, for the healing of our country, and, for those protesting for justice, in light of the death over one-week ago in Minneapolis, of George Floyd. Event organizer, Ali Pieken, whose husband Dustin is with the Iowa State Patrol (& formerly the Atlantic Police Dept.), said she was approached by a local photographer with interest or an idea for our local law enforcement to do something in show of our support for what is going on in the US right now. The plan she and others came up with, is a program all local law enforcement officers can partake in. The Atlantic Fire Department will be there as well, and free hot dogs will be served.

Officers, Deputies and others will gather in the Camblin Addition for the event. They will form a large (socially distant) circle, and be asked to “take a knee,” if they feel comfortable. Local pastor Ben Winford will be in the middle of the circle to recite a prayer. Ali Pieken says “If you are not religious and would not like to be apart of the prayer, we understand but would love for you to see come and be apart of the event. I encourage you to invite your family and friends to be apart of this as well. It’s a beautiful thing when we can all come together. And it delivers a powerful message to our amazing community.”

Pieken says the event has a two-fold purpose:

  1. To show support to the black community and everything that are feeling and facing right now
  2. To show our support for all our blue family (law enforcement), and what they are facing right now all over the country.

The public is invited to attend. The event is NOT designed to be a protest rally or to reason to spark a riot. It is a time for the community to come together and draw strength for each other and our law enforcement community. Ali says “Although we do not anticipate riots breaking out in our community, we know some people are hurting and we want them to see the human behind the badge. We want them to be able to come out and support the badge, process their feelings, or simply be apart of the community coming together in these amazing United States of America.”

Moore talks about protests, the upcoming election and legislative session

News

June 1st, 2020 by Ric Hanson

Iowa Republican Representative Tom Moore, from Griswold, spoke about with KJAN News today (Monday), about several matters, including the protests and riots over the death of George Floyd, the upcoming primary and legislative session. With regard to the protests over the death of George Floyd, Moore said “Very simply, we need to separate the difference between protest and rioting. We have both going on.” He said also, “It’s an unusual situation for law enforcement to handle.”

Moore says the overwhelming peaceful message he’s heard from protestors (and from Floyd’s family), is, that the riots are unacceptable.

With regard to the Primary Election on Tuesday, Moore – who is running unopposed on the Republican ticket – said it’ll be important to see how people respond to the Secretary of State’s efforts to mail absentee ballot request forms to all registered Iowa voters in an effort to provide for their safety, as an alternative go showing up at the polls (in response to COVID-19).

Tom Moore says the Legislature and Governor have been working over the past three or four years, to make sure “We have a legitimate, legal, accessible ability to vote.” The Legislative session begins June 3rd. Moore says they will pick up where they left off before the COVID-19 pandemic sidetracked the process. He says there will be safety precautions in-place when the chamber doors open again.

And, the legislature, he says will have unprecedented transparency measures in place

He says the new procedures will make it more difficult for the lobbyists, in that they will have to submit written public comments, e-mails and phone call information on various issues to come before the legislative body. The legislature he says, will be working on policy issues, and the budget, when they reconvene, Wednesday morning. The includes a focused list of priorities as the “Second funnel week” begins.

Many of the priorities include child care, EMS (Emergency Medical Services), and broadband internet expansion. Other, less essential bills to the time frame, will be taken up as time allows. Moore says the budget will definitely be a “huge issue as well.”
