DES MOINES – Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig and Iowa Department of Natural Resources Acting Director Bruce Trautman today (Wednesday) announced that 10 Iowa lakes will receive funding through the Publicly Owned Lakes Program. The program supports cost share for landowners to install conservation practices in the watershed above publicly owned lakes and reservoirs.

Among the lakes being targeted:

• Lake Binder, Adams County Soil and Water Conservation District
• Lake Icaria, Adams SWCD
• Three Mile Lake, Union and Adair SWCDs
• Twelve Mile Lake, Union and Adair SWCDs

Secretary Naig said “This program is another great example of the partnership between the Department of Ag, the Iowa DNR, USDA NRCS and local farmers and landowners to protect our state’s natural resources. Our lakes are a tremendous asset and these funds will help make sure they are protected so Iowans can continue to enjoy our state’s water resources.” NRCS Acting Director Trautman said “This is a significant amount of funds dedicated solely to protecting Iowa’s lakes. These projects will benefit water quality in our lakes through many different projects by utilizing common conservation practices.”

This year $323,500 in funding to districts will allow for targeted conservation work, including 465 acres of cover crops, 25,825 feet of terraces, 6 grade control structures and 6 water and sediment control basins to be implemented above the lakes. Each year, 5 percent of the appropriation to the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship for soil conservation cost share goes towards protecting the water quality of publicly owned lakes in Iowa.  Local Soil and Water Conservation Districts submit applications to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to become a designated lake.  Farmers living within the selected lakes watersheds can apply for up to 75 percent cost share for practices that protect water quality.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office today (Wednesday) issued a report listing numerous arrests. Among them, on May 11th, was 42-year old Samantha Sue Clark, of Atlantic, who faces charges that include Possession Meth 1st Offense, Unlawful Possession of Prescription Drug, OWI 1st Offense, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Clark was taken to the Cass County Jail and released the following day on $3,000 bond.

On Sunday, 32-year old Antonietta Patrizzia Lloyd, of Atlantic, was arrested by Cass County Deputies for OWI 1st Offense. Lloyd was taken to the Cass County Jail and released later that day on her own recognizance. Last Saturday, Deputies arrested 34-year old Ryan John Platts, of Urbandale, on a charge of OWI 1st Offense. Platts was also taken to the Cass County Jail and released the following day on his own recognizance.

On May 9th, 47-year old Brenda Sue Osborn, of Atlantic, was arrested on an Atlantic Police Department warrant for Theft 3rd Degree. Osborn was taken to the Cass County Jail and released the following day on her own recognizance. On May 8th, 39-year old Dirk Ramsey Wasson, of Kimballton, was arrested on a Cass County District Court warrant for Probation Violation. Wasson was taken to the Cass County Jail and released later that day on $250 bond. And, 22-year old River Dean Pecha-Nichols, of Griswold, was arrested May 8th, on a charge of Public Intoxication. Pecha-Nichols was taken to the Cass County Jail and released the following day on his own recognizance.

May 6th, Deputies in Cass County arrested 31-year old Craig Steven Mumm, of Anita, on a charge of Violation of a No Contact Order. Mumm was taken to the Cass County Jail and eleased the following day on his own recognizance.

The Taylor County Sheriff’s Office reports a man from Bedford was arrested Wednesday in Bedford. 21-year old Deiontae Moss was arrested in the 700 block of Madison Street, on a warrant for 2nd degree theft. Moss was being held without bond in the Taylor County Jail, until seen by the magistrate.

The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office reports 29-year old Andrew Joseph Nielsen, of Council Bluffs, who was being held in the Pott. County Jail, was served with a warrant, Wednesday, for OWI/1st offense. Nielsen was then returned to the custody of Corrections staff. Another inmate, 55-year old Scott Brian Badour, of Council Bluffs, was served Wednesday, with a valid, extraditable warrant out of Beadle County, SD, for being a Fugitive from Justice. His bond was set at $500. And, a Deputy was called to the jail Wednesday evening, for a reported assault. Authorities say an inmate, 22-year old Trevon Roy Barber, of Council Bluffs, allegedly assault fellow inmate, 48-year old Duane Lamont Fane, of Lincoln, NE. Fane suffered an apparent, minor injury during the incident. Barber was charged with Simple Assault, and returned to the custody of jail staff.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office reports 35-year old Terry Lee Bickford, of Shannon City, was arrested at around 9:45-p.m., Tuesday. Bickford was taken into custody at the Union County Law Enforcement Center, on a Trespass charge. He was later released on $300 bond.

The Glenwood Police Department reports numerous arrests over the past week. On Tuesday, 37-year old Cherokee Nicole Tuttle, of Council Bluffs, was arrested on a warrant for Probation Violation. Her bond was set at $5,000. Monday, Glenwood Police arrested 38-year old Alan Edwards Bauer, of Glenwood, on a warrant for Failure to Appear on a Possession of Controlled Substance (PCS) charge. Bond was set at $5,000. 24-year old Amanda LeeAnn Solt, of Red Oak, was arrested for Unlawful Possession of Prescription Drugs, Possession of Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Her bond was set at $2,300. 39-year old Jon Dawson Roberts, of Shenandoah, was arrested Monday for Carrying Weapons, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Driving Under Suspension (DUS). His bond was set at $2,600. And, 30-year old Zachery Clay Younts, of Red Oak, was arrested for a Controlled Substance Violation, carrying weapons, PCS and DUS. His bond was set at $103,000.

On Sunday, 58-year old George Leo Fraissinet, of Hamburg, was arrested for DUS. Bond was set at $300. Last Saturday, 20-year old Zachery Vaughn Case, of Council Bluffs, was arrested for PCS, and Poss. of Paraphernalia. Bond was set at $5,300. And, last Friday, 24-year old Ozzy Ray Hunter, of Red Oak, was arrested on a warrant for Violation of Probation. His bond was set at $2,500.

Members of the City of Atlantic’s Community Protection Committee met Tuesday evening to discuss, among other things, possible changes to fireworks displays. The committee chose to leave in-place, an ordinance that says it is not legal to set off fireworks within 300-feet of any public school buildings, assisted living facility, or hospital. Also, fireworks can only be shot-off on private property. Atlantic Police will crack down on issuing warnings and tickets to those who were warned last year about violating the ordinance.

Violators will be subject to a $250 fine plus $85 in court costs. Anyone who was previously found guilty of violating the ordinance, may be subject to a $600 fine plus court costs if they are a repeat offender. The ordinance allows residents of Atlantic to set off fireworks from Noon until 10-p.m. July 2nd and 3rd. Displays are allowed on July 4th, from Noon until 11-p.m. The Committee urges residents of Atlantic to respect the wishes of their neighbors, if they complain about the noise and light show during the late night hours.

The State of Iowa says licensed retailers and community groups will be allowed to sell the fireworks to adults out of permanent structures, between June 1st and July 8th. Fireworks may be sold by licensed vendors using temporary structures, such as tents, from June 13th to July 8th.

FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — Neighbors investigating the source of a stench in Fort Dodge have found the badly decomposed body of a person. They found the body Tuesday evening in a metal shed behind a vacant house and called police. Webster County deputy medical examiner Mark Gargano says he couldn’t determine the person’s gender or determine whether the body showed any significant injuries.
He says the body was being sent to the state medical examiner for an autopsy.

The Trevor Frederickson Memorial Fund, last week, awarded three, $750 scholarships during the Atlantic High School’s Class Night. Fund spokesperson Melanie Petty says “Each year the scholarship committee receives several amazing applications.  This year’s recipients were Cole Jipsen, Cody McCreedy and Emily Saeugling.  Two of Trevor’s close friends/committee members, Tyler Drvol and Steven Petersen were present to hand out the scholarships.” Petty says also, “We want to congratulate all of the area graduating Seniors and wish them the best in their future endeavors.”
