IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa men’s basketball junior Kris Murray is a consensus third team All-American, as a result of being voted to the third team on three of the four outlets used by the NCAA to determine its consensus All-America teams.

Murray was voted third team All-America by Sporting News, United States Basketball Writers Association, and the Associated Press.

Iowa has had a consensus All-American four of the last eight seasons, including four straight years. Jarrod Uthoff was a consensus second-team All-America in 2016; Luka Garza earned first-team distinction in 2020 and 2021, while Keegan Murray was recognized on the first team in 2022.

The 6-foot-8 forward was also a Naismith, Wooden and Lute Olson Award semifinalist, and is a finalist for the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year.

Murray averaged a team-best 20.2 points and 7.9 rebounds per outing this season. He was the only Division I player to average 20+ points, 7+ rebounds, one block, and have made 65+ 3-pointers this season.

The Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native scored 30+ points four times this season, 25+ points nine times, and 20+ points 15 times.

Atlantic boys soccer looking to continue growth under familiar new coach

Sports

March 28th, 2023 by admin

The Atlantic boys soccer team is hoping to continue to grow the program under new head coach Mark Andersen. It won’t be a total reboot for the team as Andersen has been an assistant for the squad under previous coach Matt Smith the past two seasons. Coach Andersen said he hopes to carry over some of the mindset that Coach Smith was putting into place and add his spin into it.

Coach Andersen said numbers are a little low for the team this year and they have quite a few new faces so early on it’s expected to be a learning process.

When asked what he feels may be a strength for this year’s squad, Coach Andersen said they have a good number of aggressive offensive players.

The Trojans open up with a couple of matches this week against Riverside and Carroll.

Southwest Valley Schools to provide separate girls wrestling program

Sports

March 28th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

(Corning, Iowa)  – Officials with the Southwest Valley School District’s Athletics Department posted on social media Monday night, that Southwest Valley will now be providing their our own district high school girls wrestling program. Athletic Director Allen Naugle said “This past year working with SWAT (CAM, Nodaway Valley, Griswold and Atlantic) went very well. Our girls were able to practice and compete with girls from a few different school districts. However we felt that moving forward it is in our district’s best interest to provide our girls an opportunity to compete for Southwest Valley.
“Due to future transportation difficulties and the increased popularity of girls wrestling,” Naugle said “We felt that it was best to make the change now. We want to be able to provide the girls here at Southwest Valley (Corning and Villisca) their own program and the ability to compete for their school.
“We greatly appreciate all of the support this past year from the girls who competed, their parents and the community as we competed as SWAT. We appreciate the cooperation and success we had working with 4 other school districts. The coaches did a great job working with the girls and they were able to see some success. We wish the SWAT program continued success in the future.”
Naugle added, “We are extremely excited to be able to grow our girls wrestling program and provide our girls with an opportunity to practice and compete in their own district. We will be posting and start looking for a girls wrestling coach in the very near future. We will start to work on scheduling as well. We hope that any girl who will be in high school next year that does not play basketball will consider coming out! Experience is not necessary and everyone is welcome!
Any questions can be directed to Southwest Valley AD Allen Naugle and in the future our girls wrestling coach, once hired.”
