OTTUMWA, Iowa (AP) — Officials have recovered the body of a fisherman who went missing in southeast Iowa. A local boater found the body of 79-year-old Richard Lewis Mart, of Ottumwa, in the Des Moines River around 8:30 a.m. Monday. His body was found just north of the Blackhawk Road Access, northwest of Omaha. Authorities had been searching for Mart since his boat was discovered wedged a riverbank on Saturday morning on what is known as Turkey Island.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports four recent arrests. Last Friday, 24-year old Alex Lee Pleis, of Audubon, was arrested on a District Court warrant for Probation Violation. Pleis was taken to the Cass County Jail and released later that day on $5,000 bond. Also arrested Friday, was 49-year old Robin Renee Vinzant, of Atlantic, on a Polk County warrant. Vinzant was taken to the Cass County Jail and released the following day to Polk County authorities.

On June 13th, 27-year old Michelle Lee Dougherty, of Atlantic, was arrested in Cass County on charges of Possession of Meth 1st Offense, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Dougherty was taken to the Cass County Jail and released later that day on her own recognizance. And, on June 12th, 45-year old William Michael Cook,  of Stockton, AL, was arrested on a charge of OWI 1st Offense.. Cook was also arrested at the same time by the Atlantic Police Department on a charge of Assault with Bodily Injury. He was taken to the Cass County Jail and released the following day on $2,000 bond.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Dozens of scientists are coming to a Davenport nature preserve with the goal of identifying as many species of life as possible in a 24-hour period. The Quad-City Times reports that about 50 scientists will be at Nahant Marsh on Friday and Saturday for a “bio-blitz,” where they’ll collect basic taxonomic data and highlight the value of local habitats.

Nahant Executive Director Brian Ritter says there hasn’t been a comprehensive survey of the entire property. He says he’s interested to see if scientists will discover any threatened or endangered species in the area.
The event will also include educational activities for residents and children. The bio-blitz is sponsored by the Guardians of the Prairie and Forest group in partnership with the Nahant Marsh Education Center and Friends of Nahant Marsh.

BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — The city of Burlington will pay $2 million to the family of a woman who was mistakenly killed by a police officer. An attorney for the estate of Autumn Steele announced the dollar figure Monday. A settlement was reached earlier this month. The disclosure of police video of the incident wasn’t part of the settlement. The estate’s attorney, Dave O’Brien, says the family wants the video released but the city is refusing. Attorneys for the city were not immediately available to comment.

Steele was 34 years old when she was killed in January 2015 in front of one of her young children by officer Jesse Hill. Hill shot Steele while firing his weapon at a growling family dog. O’Brien argued last month that the police video contradicts the official narrative.

WELLSBURG, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say one person has died in a weekend crash in northern Iowa. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that the one-vehicle crash was reported shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday on Highway 20 in Grundy County, about three miles west of Highway 14. The Grundy County sheriff’s office has not identified the person killed. Deputies say the vehicle was driving westbound when it drove off the right-hand shoulder and entered the ditch, then struck a fence and a tree. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The crash remains under investigation.

The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office reports several people were arrested Friday through Sunday. At around 4:20-p.m. Sunday, 73-year old Larry Allen Engel, of Avoca, was arrested in Pott. County for OWI/1st offense, following an accident at the Avoca Fairgrounds. 20-year old Jose’ Ignacio Pocasangre-Menjivar, and 18-year old Dylan Armando Jaimes, both of Denison, were arrested at around 4:20-a.m., Sunday in Pott. County, for Possession of a Controlled Substance and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. They were taken into custody after a Pott. County Deputy assisted Cass County Sheriff’s Deputy Josh McLaren with a traffic stop on I-80, near mile marker 44.  Deputies found 2.3-grams of marijuana, a marijuana pipe and grinder in the vehicle.

A man from Waterloo was arrested following a traffic stop on a vehicle near Minden, on I-80, Saturday afternoon. 36-year old Justin Anious Jones, a passenger in the vehicle, was arrested for Violation of an Order/contempt of court, and Possession of a Controlled Substance. Authorities seized 344.9-grams of a green leafy substance in a container, THC suckers, and THC oil. He was also charged with Child Endangerment. 25-year old Matthew Robert Scheidle, of Council Bluffs, was arrested Saturday night, for OWI/1st offense. He was taken into custody following an ATV accident in the 16,000 block of 275th Street.

A little after 7-a.m., Saturday, a Pott. County Deputy was dispatched to a reported residential alarm in the 24,000 block of Richland Loop. He arrested 51-year old Jeffrey Gene Pierson, of Council Bluffs, for Possession of a Controlled Substance/Marijuana. He recovered drug paraphernalia and 70.3 grams of pot in a plastic container. Saturday afternoon, 29-year old Brett Frederick Mohr, of Cedar Rapids, was arrested after an incident in Treynor late Saturday morning. Authorities say Sgt. Marc Freeman made contact with Mohr at the Casey’s gas station, after Mohr was seen driving without a seat belt. Mohr took off at a high rate of speed but was later apprehended in Treynor and charged with Felony Eluding. He was also arrested on a Harrison County charge of being a Fugitive from Justice. The bond for which was $7,500.

38-year old Chad Steven Carl Rains, of Crescent was arrested late Friday evening, after a Deputy stopped his pickup. A records check indicated Rains was wanted on warrants out of Pott. County, for OWI/2nd offense, Driving while license denied, suspended, cancelled or revoked, and Failure to Maintain Control. 38-year old Brian Joe Howell, of Carter Lake, who was already being held in the Pott. County Jail, was served with a warrant Saturday morning, for Violation of Probation. He was returned to the custody of jail staff.

The Glenwood Police Department reports 33-year old Derick Clark, of Tabor, was arrested Saturday, for OWI 1^st and Driving while revoked. His cash or surety bond was set at $2,000. And, 41-year old Michael Carver, of Glenwood, was arrested Saturday for driving while barred. His cash or surety bond was also set at $2,000.

DENVER, Iowa (AP) — Nearly a tenth of a northeast Iowa high school’s small graduating class are Eagle Scouts. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that Denver High School’s class of 2018 had 52 students. Five of them have reached the rank of Eagle Scout through Troop 118 in Denver, Iowa. Karter Krueger, Jonah Dunkin, Trevor Thrum and Brandon Beaty began as Tiger Cubs in first grade. Nicholas Krabbenhoft joined in sixth grade after moving from Alaska.

The five Scouts combined have more than 140 merit badges, have spent more than 150 nights camping and have done more than 1,000 documented hours of community service. Their Eagle Scout project included improving a local baseball and softball field, creating a metal sign for a cemetery, rewiring a church sound system and building a Frisbee golf course.

The Sac City Police Department reports a woman was arrested Saturday night for allegedly passing fake $50 bills at a convenience store. Police were called at around 10:13-p.m. to the Crossroads convenience store for a report of a female subject passing a counterfeit bill. The investigation determined that the suspect, 43-year old Julie McManigal, of Alta, attempted to pay for merchandise with a counterfeit 50 dollar bills.

Crossroads employee used a counterfeit money detector pen to determine that the bill was counterfeit along with visually observing foreign language printed on the bill.  McManigal was arrested and booked into the Sac County Jail for Forgery, a class D Felony. Her cash bond was set at $5,000.

A woman from Shelby County suffered injuries to her lower extremities during a single-vehicle accident Sunday morning northwest of Lewis. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office says 40-year old Jennifer Peterson, of Harlan, was injured in the accident that happened at around 10:10-a.m., near 540th Lane and Lansing Road. Peterson was traveling east on Lansing Road in a 2000 Ford F150 pickup, when for reasons unknown, the pickup left the road and entered the ditch, where it flipped over. The woman was transported by Medivac Ambulance to the Cass County Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Damage to the pickup was estimated to be around $5,000. Deputies cited Peterson for Failure to Maintain Control. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Lewis Rescue and Lewis First Responders and Medivac Ambulance.
