MUSCATINE, Iowa (AP) — Two Iowa men are facing several charges after authorities say they tried to crash a vehicle into the Muscatine police headquarters. Muscatine Police said the two Muscatine men were arrested early Sunday after their vehicle became stuck on a brick planter outside the Muscatine Public Safety Building. The crash happened shortly before 5 a.m. Sunday. No one was injured. Police said 24-year-old Gilberto Daniel Castillo III and 21-year-old Marc Anthony Castillo were both arrested on suspicion of terrorism second-degree criminal mischief. The 24-year-old was also charged with drunken driving, and the 21-year-old was charged with public intoxication.

FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) — Iowa authorities have identified the Fort Dodge woman who was shot and killed by police last week. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said 39-year-old Melissa Halda was fatally shot by a Webster County Sheriff’s deputy during the incident on Tuesday night. Halda was reported to be acting erratically while wielding knives before the shooting happened. Halda was shot and killed after deputies from the Webster County Sheriff’s Office and a Fort Dodge police officer responded. No other details were released about the shooting. The sheriff’s deputy who shot Halda has been placed on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — The mother of an 18-year-old University of Iowa student who froze to death on the university’s campus is suing the school for negligence. The lawsuit contends Gerald Michael Belz, of Cedar Rapids, was unable to get into his residence hall on the night of Jan. 29, 2019, when wind chills were 51 degrees below zero. The lawsuit says the university locked all exterior doors to Burge Hall to prevent pipes from freezing but did not alert residents to the change in normal procedures. Belz was found unresponsive the next day. His death was ruled an accident. The university declined to comment on the lawsuit.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa man has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole in the 1979 murder of an 18-year-old high school student. Jerry Burns was arrested in Dec. 19 2018, 39 years to the day after Michelle Martinko was found dead in her parents’ car outside a shopping mall in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She had been stabbed to death. Burns was convicted of first-degree murder in February and was sentenced on Friday. Cedar Rapids police have said they arrested Burns after DNA taken from a restaurant straw he had used matched DNA from the crime scene.

Dr. Matt Weresh wins 2020 Tournament of Champions

Dr. Matt Weresh came out on top of the 2020 Tournament of Champions at the Atlantic Golf and Country Club on Sunday,  holding on to his two-day lead and eventually winning by two strokes. Weresh finished the weekend at +1, 208 to take his third title at the T of C. He previously won back to back titles in 2004 and 2005.

Weresh went into the final day with a 4 shot lead in the Championship Division. He was -2 after the first two days of play with matching 68’s on the par 69 course both Friday and Saturday. Andrew Martin was 4-shots back to start the final day. Zach Christianson and Aaron King were both 5 shots back.

Weresh played a very consistent round most of the day, hitting fairways and greens with multiple birdie opportunities. He faltered a bit late in the round with a bogey on 11, a double-bogey on 12, and bogeys on 17 and 18. He ended up finishing the day with a 72. Zach Christianson made a late charge with 5 birdies sprinkled through his final round. He ended the day at even par 69 and finished two shots back for the weekend with a +3, 210 total. Andrew Martin was on even par pace for much of the final day but three bogeys on the back nine landed him with a 72. He finished third overall with a +5, 212 total.

Ron Peterson

The Senior Division was dominated by multi-time past champion Ron Peterson. His first year playing in the Senior Division of the Tournament proved fruitful with a +8, 215 total. He won the tournament by 7 shots over past champ Del Miller who finished at +15, 222. Two-time defending Senior champ Darron Baker came in 3rd this year, also with a +15, 222.

The Super Senior Division was won by the man with the best single round of anyone on the weekend. Rick Thompson opened his three day title run with a -3, 66 on Friday. He added a 70 on Saturday and 72 on Sunday to shoot a +1, 208 for the weekend. Past champion Arnie Leistad of Atlantic was the runner-up with a +11, 218 for the tournament.

Atlantic football delays the beginning of practice

Atlantic football will delay the beginning of practice for the 2020 season due to issues related to the pandemic.

Atlantic Activities Director Andy Mitchell simply stated “Atlantic HS is postponing the start of football practices until Thursday August 13, 2020.”

No further details were released at this time.

Injury accident in Council Bluffs Sunday afternoon

The Council Bluffs Police Traffic Unit is investigating a two vehicle personal injury crash that occurred at approximately 1:47-p.m., Sunday, at the intersection of So 24th St and Marketplace Drive. The crash shut down the southbound lanes of So 24th St from I-80 to Marketplace Drive for approximately 2 1/2 hours. The roadway was reopened at approximately 4:25 PM.

Council Bluffs PD Shield

Authorities say a Ford Explorer was struck on the passenger side by a Dodge Pickup that was heading south on So 24th. All 5 of the occupants (1 adult and 4 juveniles) of the Ford Explorer suffered injuries requiring transport to the University of Nebraska Medical Center – Trauma Center. The Dodge pickup had two adult occupants at the time of the crash. Both sustained injuries with one requiring transport to a Council Bluffs hospital for treatment.

The crash investigation was still in the preliminary stages, Sunday evening. The Council Bluffs Police Traffic Unit is leading the investigation.

MICHAEL ELLIOT WELLMAN, 46, of Harlan, died Friday, Aug. 7th, at home. Memorial services for MICHAEL WELLMAN will be held 3-p.m. Wed., Aug. 12th, at the Pauley-Jones Funeral Home, in Harlan.

Visitation at the funeral home is on Wed., Aug. 12th, from 1-until 3-p.m.

JOAN C. LARSEN, 90, of Atlantic died Saturday, August 8th at the Heritage House in Atlantic.  Funeral services for JOAN LARSEN will be held on Wednesday, August 12th at 10:30 am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Atlantic.  Hockenberry Funeral Home, in Atlantic has the arrangements.

Burial in the Hamlin Lutheran Cemetery.

CCHS phone problems continue

Officials with the Cass County Health System said Sunday that they “Are still experiencing phone issues at the main Atlantic campus.  Appears Verizon customers are still having trouble connecting.”  CCHS Communications Specialist Kat Niemann says they “are continuing to work with local utilities get this resolved as soon as possible.”

Nieman reminds persons who have business with CCHS to please call 712-778-5140 or the Griswold Rural Health Clinic and you will be routed to the appropriate department.

Cass County Democrats’ School Supply/Food Drive continues through Aug. 14th

Here’s a reminder: The Cass County Democratic Party’s annual School Supply Drive is underway through August 14th. A Food drive is being coupled with the school supply drive that began on July 13th. Food pantries and the schools will do the actual distribution of the donated items. Suggested items for the school drive include everything from pencils to spiral notebooks to book bags and also should include non-traditional items such as facial tissues, hand sanitizer, plastic zip-top storage bags, and copy paper. Non-perishable items such as canned and boxed food items are needed; cleaning supplies, personal hygiene items, zip-top storage bags or other food storage containers are also welcome.

There will be drop-off sites around the County (See the list below).

Anita: City Clerk’s Office; Library; Main Street Market; Rusty Razor; Rolling Hills Bank.
Atlantic: Fareway (school supplies only); private home at 10 E. 13th St.; YMCA; Rolling Hills Bank
