CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A judge is ordering an Iowa county to invalidate 50,000 requests for absentee ballots, agreeing with President Trump’s campaign that the county elections commissioner overstepped by pre-filling them with voters’ personal information.Judge Ian Thornhill issued a temporary injunction that orders Linn County Auditor Joel Miller to contact those voters in writing to inform them that the forms should not have been pre-filled with their information and cannot be processed. Instead, voters will have to either fill out new blank requests for absentee ballots or vote in-person on Election Day. At issue was Miller’s decision to send absentee ballot request forms to about 140,000 county voters in July that were pre-filled with their personal information.

August 28th, 2020 by admin

Cass County Democratic Party Chair Sherry Toelle reports that the Party has opened its new Headquarters at 514 Chestnut Street in Atlantic. It will be open Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.. COVID 19 precautions are in place–masks must be worn and physical distancing will be enforced. “We want to do everything we can to limit the risks of contracting the corona virus,” Party Chair Sherry Toelle explained.

Inside the Headquarters are voter registration and absentee ballot request forms. “We are a one-stop shop, also having candidate information available. We are just now receiving some of the candidate campaign signs and are awaiting the Biden-Harris and Kelley signs. People can stop in and complete a form to receive yard/barn signs. We will also help voters if they require assistance to complete voter forms. Our office telephone number is 712-250-3005,” Toelle stated.

The group plans to have a grand-opening at its Headquarters in September. Details will be shared at a later date.

Toelle also wanted to thank all the area folks that supported their annual school supply drive. “On behalf of all the children, families, and schools in Cass County, I want to thank everyone who donated time, money, supplies, and food to our School Supply & Food Drive. We had a great turnout but would not have been able to do so without the cooperation of the communities, organizations, and businesses that allowed us to put drop-boxes in their buildings. And many thanks to my volunteers who transported items back and forth between the community and our Headquarters. ”

Audubon set to host Exira-EHK to kick of 2020 football season

Sports

The defending State Runner-Up Audubon Wheelers will open up the 2020 season hosting nearby foe Exira-EHK on Friday night at Chis Jones Field. The Wheelers come in ranked #3 in the opening Radio Iowa poll in 8-Man. Audubon brings back a strong core from last year’s team, but some great players graduated as well. Wheelers Head Coach Sean Birks said one of the biggest question marks is who steps up at the line of scrimmage.

The skill positions are much less of a question mark on the other hand. Top passer Gavin Smith returns after tossing 14 touchdown and 846 yards. Ethan Klocke, Joel Klocke, and Braden Wessel form a strong trio of rushers and receivers that accounted for 21 scores last season. Exira-EHK Head Coach Tom Petersen said they will be a tough group to slow down.

Exira-EHK will have a team with a similar makeup as their last, a mix of experience and youth. Coach Petersen said it’s going to be a learn as you go type of start to the season.

The Spartans return Quarterback Tyler Petersen who threw for 1,075 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. Another coaches son Trey Petersen will be expected to pick up a chunk of the load in the backfield. Creighton Nelson was relied on heavily in the ground game last year but he is gone to graduation. Coach Birks expects they’ll get the typical strong test from the Spartans.

We’ll have coverage of the game on KJAN. Tune in for our pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00 p.m. to start the night, followed by The Dvorak Tire and Service Pregame Show at 6:30 p.m., and then kickoff at 7:00 p.m. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call on AM 1220, FM 101.1, online at kjan.com, and you can watch the video broadcast as well on KJANTV.

Atlantic football brings a strong team mindset to the 2020 season

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic football team is gearing up for what they feel will be a strong season. The reason they are confident is the wealth of experience that returns to the squad and they are emphasizing a strong team first mentality. Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott says this team has strong contributors all across the lineup.

Garrett McLaren returns under center after passing for 612 yards and 6 touchdowns as a sophomore. Caden Andersen is expected to get some action at quarterback as well. Leading receiver Colin Mullenix is back after hauling in 5 touchdowns last year. Grant Sturm and Garrett Reynolds are two other strong returning targets. Coach McDermott knows they have a number of guys that can help fill the void left by graduated star running back Tyler Moen.

With so much experience returning the Trojans are confident they can make some noise this season but Coach McDermott said he thinks they are just anxious to get out and compete at this point.

The Trojans open up the season on the road at Class 1A #9 Underwood on Friday night. You can hear Coach McDermott’s thoughts on that game and the full interview on Friday afternoon at 4:45 p.m. on Trojan Preview on KJAN.

Judge to rule on Trump’s motion to block Iowa absentee forms

News

August 27th, 2020 by admin

By RYAN J. FOLEY Associated Press
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A judge says he will rule soon on a request from President Donald Trump’s reelection campaign to invalidate 50,000 requests for absentee ballots submitted by voters in Iowa’s second-largest county. Judge Ian Thornhill heard arguments on a request for a temporary injunction that would block Linn County Auditor Joel Miller from sending ballots to those voters. Instead, the voters would have to fill out new forms to request to vote absentee. At issue is Miller’s decision to send absentee ballot request forms to about 140,000 county voters in July that were pre-filled with their personal information, including their voter identification numbers. The Trump campaign contends that was improper.
