Atlantic’s Casey picks football at Morningside

Sports

April 13th, 2023 by admin

Atlantic senior Brenden Casey has chosen to play football at the next level and will do so with the Morningside Mustangs. Casey held a commitment ceremony with family and coaches on Thursday morning at Atlantic High School. Casey said it came down to whether he wanted to continue wrestling or football in college and ultimately he felt football was the way to go.

Casey chose Morningside College over Simpson, Benedictine, and Luther. He was drawn in to the success their program has had over the years.

Brenden was an offensive and defensive lineman for the Trojans and he said he isn’t certain where he’ll fit in yet with the Mustangs. He said he talked to them more about the defensive side of the ball but he’s willing to play wherever they need him. He said he does enjoy the defensive side a bit more.

He said his work ethic is something he prides himself on and he’s learned the value of hard work through all of his activity endeavors in school.

Casey plans to study biology at Morningside and thinks he’ll take that into zoology or physical therapy.

Noelck signs with Wartburg Volleyball

Sports

April 13th, 2023 by admin

Atlantic senior Lexi Noelck signed to continue her academic and volleyball career at Wartburg College on Thursday. Noelk signed surrounded by family and coaches at Atlantic High School Thursday morning. Lexi said she has always loved volleyball and knew for a long time that she wanted to try to play in college.

Noelck was a split duty setter and outside hitter for Atlantic, accumulating 413 assists and 201 kills during her senior season. She said she expects to fulfill a similar role at Wartburg.

She considered Grand View, Buena Vista, and Simpson but was sold on Wartburg pretty quickly.

Lexi said she’ll just continue to try to get some skill work in and build strength to prepare for her start with the Knights.

Iowa baseball set for B1G series at Minnesota

Sports

April 13th, 2023 by Ric Hanson

The weather forecast for the Twin Cities has forced Iowa and Minnesota to adjust the schedule for their three-game Big Ten baseball series. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning Friday afternoon and finish with a single game on Sunday. Hawkeye coach Rick Heller says the twin bill will change how both teams manage their pitching staff.

Iowa is 23-8 overall after a Wednesday win over Wisconsin-Milwaukee and 2-4 in the Big Ten. The Gophers are 3-3 in the league race. They are 9-22 overall and Heller says a challenging non-conference slate is the reason.

Heller says Sam Peterson is out for the series and Raider Tello is doubtful after taking a pitch off of his wrist in a series at Indiana. The Hawkeyes struggled with runners on in dropping two of three against the Hoosiers but it was the most impressive weekend yet for the starting pitching.
