(Radio Iowa) — Republican Governor Kim Reynolds held her second annual “Harvest Festival” fundraiser this weekend, critiquing her opponent’s debate performance and bringing in reinforcements who stressed a national G-O-P campaign theme. White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders was the evening’s keynote speaker, telling the audience elections have consequences — and there’s a 5-to-4 conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court now because Donald Trump is president. Senator Chuck Grassley told the crowd “Remember Kavanaugh!” should be the battle cry of every Republican campaign in the country. And Senator Joni Ernst asked the crowd to acknowledge Grassley’s role in getting U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh confirmed. “I know this is Kim Reynolds’ night, but can we give a big round for Chuck Grassley?” Ernst asked.

The White House press secretary also praised Grassley’s role as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee. “He singlehandedly stood in the face and said: ‘Absolutely not. We will not allow you to take over this process. We will not allow you to tear us down and we will not allow us to stop,'” Sanders said. “He did a great thing. Thank you, senator.” That was the third of three ovations Grassley received from the crowd of Republicans gathered in Des Moines Saturday night. Reynolds asked the crowd if they’d watched her debate with Democratic challenger Fred Hubbell.

“I have to tell you, I had a fun,” Reynolds said. “It was my first debate ever, but it is pretty darned fun to talk about the amazing things that are happening in this state and talk about how we want to build on that success and I think it was a stark contrast.” Reynolds told the crowd Hubbell didn’t look like he was having fun during the event because he was “tearing down our state.” Reynolds and Hubbell are scheduled to debate again on Wednesday night. Their third and final debate will be held on Sunday morning.

Red Oak Police, late Sunday night, arrested 25-year old Logan Samuel Cashatt, of Red Oak. He was taken into custody at around 11:20-p.m. in the 100 block of N. 2nd Street, for Domestic Abuse Assault. Cashatt was transported to the Montgomery County Jail and held without bond.

The Atlantic Sesquicentennial Parade was held in conjunction with the 2018 Fireman’s Parade, Saturday evening. The winners are as follows:

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have identified a 59-year-old Iowa woman who died in a house fire last week. The Scott County Sheriff’s office says Cynthia Webb died Thursday night in the town of Blue Grass in eastern Iowa.

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Mason City man has been sentenced to up to 10 years in prison for voluntary manslaughter in the stabbing death of another man. The Globe Gazette reports that 21-year-old Braedon Bowers was sentenced Friday in Cerro Gordo County District Court. Bowers was found guilty in August of voluntary manslaughter. He had been charged with first-degree murder in the May 30, 2017, stabbing of 23-year-old Wraymond Todd in Mason City.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris of California is making her first campaign trip to Iowa before Election Day, adding to speculation about a potential presidential run in 2020. Harris plans to visit the state on Oct. 22-23. It’ll be her first visit to the leadoff presidential caucus state since she was elected to the Senate in 2016. She’s among a large group of Democrats, including several senators, who are contemplating a challenge to President Donald Trump.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa state law enforcement officials are warning the public to be on guard for a telephone scam in which the callers pretend to state police and demand payment. The Iowa Department of Public Safety’s Division of Criminal Investigation says scammers pose as employees of the “Iowa State Police” and claim to have seized a vehicle registered to the call recipient in which drugs were found. The scammers then demand immediate payment.

A 28-year old Shelby County man was being held over the weekend in the Douglas County, NE., jail, following a fatal accident that occurred Saturday night near Bennington, NE. Tony Kenkel, of Earling, faces felony motor vehicle homicide and DUI- causing serious bodily injury, charges, in connection with a crash between a pickup and car that resulted in the death of 21-year old Joseph Daniels, of Council Bluffs.

Daniels died at the scene of the accident that took place at around 7:30-p.m.  A second person in the car, 21-year old Thomas Griese, of Council Bluffs, was last reported to be in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police said the two men were in a 1995 Mitsubishi 3000 GT sports car on Highway 36 near Lake Cunningham Park Road, when a black 2017 Chevy Silverado pickup truck driven by Kenkel, crossed the median and hit them head on. Investigators said Kenkel had been drinking.

Bennington Road remained closed from 84th St. to 96th St. until 1:15-a.m., Sunday.

The Griswold School Board will meet in a regular session 5:30-p.m. Monday, at the Central Office, Middle School/High School building. New business on their agenda includes (but is not limited to): approval of a gym floor maintenance contract; approval Medical Enterprises contract; approval of 2018-19 School Improvement Advisory Committee; action on an Early Retirement Policy, and a decision on the school sign electrical hook-up.

The Board will receive information and/or updates with regard to Certified Enrollment, School Culture and Teacher Leadership, as well as the Compensation Program.

The CAM School Board will meet 6:30-p.m. Monday, in the CAM High School Media Center (in Anita). On their agenda, is a presentation by the CAM Middle School Student Council, and discussion/action, with regard to:

Open enrollment applications; Resignations; Contracts; Volunteers; Bank Account consolidation; the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), and a review of 100 series Board policies. The CAM School Board will also consider a fundraiser request from a CAM Dance Team sponsor.

The Elk Horn-Kimballton School District’s Board of Education will meet 6-p.m. Monday in the Conference Room at the Elk Horn Building. New Business items on their agenda include:

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have identified a 59-year-old Iowa woman who died in a house fire last week. The Scott County Sheriff’s office says Cynthia Webb died Thursday night in the town of Blue Grass in eastern Iowa.

Webb spent her career working for government agencies in Scott County, including the sheriff’s department and Davenport City Council. The cause of the fire has not been determined. The Iowa State Fire Marshal’s office is investigating.

Atlantic Fire Chief Mark McNees has announced the winners of the Fireman’s Parade that took place Saturday, Oct. 13th:

• The Harlan Fire Dept. was the “Most trucks” division winner.
• 1st place float: Cass County Creators – Clover Kids Club
• 2nd place float: Olsen’s/Olsen’s BP
• 3rd place float: CCAC/Dr. Victora (Cass County Animal Care)

McNees said there were 13 fire departments represented in the parade, and a total of 29 fire trucks. There were around 120 total entries. Fire departments who came to participate include: Atlantic, Anita, Marne, Lewis, Harlan, Red Oak, Elk Horn, Wiota, Griswold, Massena, Adair, Exira, Hancock and Walnut.
