The Adair County Sheriff’s Office reports two people were arrested on separate warrants last week. 38-year old Jennifer Marie Woollums, of Greenfield, was arrested Oct. 15th, and 64-year old Dale Douglas Custard, of Stuart, was arrested Oct. 18th. Both were arrested on Adair County warrants for Violation of Probation.

Woollums was being held in the Adair County Jail on a $2,000 cash only bond. Custard was released on his Own Recognizance.

In an attempt to head off troubles before they start, with regard to prescription drug abuse, Adair County Sheriff Jeff Vandewater says he’s pleased to announce the addition of a Prescription Drug drop box to the lobby of the Adair County Public Safety Center.  The drug drop box is available 24 hours a day. If you arrive after business hours or if they lobby door is locked, just inform the dispatcher on the intercom of your desire to use the drug drop box and they will let you in. If any Adair County resident has difficulty or a hardship in getting to the Adair County Public Safety Center, you are welcome to call Sheriff Jeff Vandewater directly at (641) 743-2148, and he will make arrangements to personally pick up and dispose of your unneeded or unwanted prescription drugs.  The prescription drug drop-off box is made possible through a grant from the Governor’s Office of Drug Control Policy. 

Prescription drug diversion can be defined as the unlawful transfer of prescription drugs to people they were not originally prescribed for. Prescription drug abuse is a very real concern, even here in mostly rural Adair County.  The misuse of prescription drugs, especially narcotic painkillers (opioids) can have serious consequences.  When not used as directed, prescription drugs can lead to behavioral disorders, addiction and even death.   One of the biggest steps that we can take to avoid prescription drug diversion is to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or are outdated.

These same drugs unfortunately have become the target of theft and misuse, often times by people who have access to the residence where the prescription drugs are stored.  America’s 12-17 year olds have made prescription drugs the number one substance of abuse for their age group, and much of that supply is unwittingly coming from the medicine cabinets of their parents, grandparents and friends.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports 24-year old Joel Shawn Thomas White, of Atlantic, was charged Oct. 17th, with felony Ongoing Criminal Conduct (B Felony); three felony charges of Drug Trafficking (B Felonies); and three felony charges of Drug Tax Stamp Violation (D Felonies). White was already incarcerated at the Cass County Jail on felony charges of Possession with Intent to Deliver Marijuana (D Felony), Drug Tax Stamp Violation (D Felony), and, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a Simple Misdemeanor. White remains held at the Cass County Jail on $130,300 bond. On Oct. 17th also, 38-year old Peter A. Mualia, of Anita, was arrested on a District Court warrant for Probation Violation. Mualia was taken to the Cass County Jail and released the following day on his own recognizance.

The U-S Dept. of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service reports Ruiz Food Products, Inc., a Denison, Texas, establishment, is recalling approximately 2,490,593 pounds of ready-to-eat meat and poultry Taquitos that may be adulterated with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes. The ready-to-eat meat and poultry Taquitos were produced from July 1 through Oct. 10, 2018. The following products are subject to recall: [View Labels (PDF only)]

• 4.5-lbs. cardboard cases containing 24-count Go-Go Taquitos “Beef Taco & Cheese Taquitos” with a case code 86183 printed on the label.
• 4.5-lbs. cardboard cases containing 24-count Go-Go Taquitos “Buffalo Style Cooked Glazed Chicken Taquitos” with a case code 86006 printed on the label.
• 4.5-lbs. cardboard cases containing 24-count Go-Go Taquitos “Chipotle Chicken Wrapped in A Battered Flour Tortilla” with a case code 86019 printed on the label.

The products subject to recall bear establishment numbers “17523A or P-17523A” and “45694 or P-45694” in the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to distributors nationwide. 

The problem was discovered on October 16, 2018 when Ruiz Food products, Inc. received notification that the diced onions used in the production of their beef and cheese taquitos was being recalled by their supplier due to Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella concerns. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) — The owner of a downtown Waterloo brewery and restaurant has refused to reserve space for a Republican election night party, saying it’s not “the right fit.” Black Hawk County GOP treasurer LeaAnn Saul told the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier that she tried to book space for 75 people the night of Nov. 6 at SingleSpeed. But SingleSpeed owner Dave Morgan refused, telling her in an email that because “our core beliefs rest a bit left of what we feel would be appropriate for such an event, we feel it would be best to guide you in a different direction.” In a subsequent email he said: “Simply put, it just doesn’t feel like the right fit.”

Saul says that’s odd, because Morgan has allowed events for Republican candidates, including Gov. Kim Reynolds. But Morgan says candidate events have less visibility than a larger, election night bash. Saul says local Republicans respect his right to refuse, but “it was just surprising.”

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — An investigator who helped uncover the sexual exploitation of 400 boys by an Iowa basketball coach says victims can still come forward to share their information. Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation agent Ryan Kedley said Monday that state and federal investigators have attempted to contact all 400 known victims of former Iowa Barnstormers Coach Greg Stephen, which he called a massive undertaking. But he says some individuals who were victimized haven’t been identified or contacted.

Kedley says Stephen’s guilty pleas to sexual exploitation and pornography charges doesn’t mean the case is over and that anyone who wants to share information should call his office. Stephen acknowledged that he secretly recorded players showering, posed as a girl on social media to trick boys into sending him sexually explicit images, and recorded himself fondling some boys while they slept.

The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office reports a Walnut man was arrested Friday evening on a Theft charge. 58-year old Russell Mohr was arrested for Theft in the 5th Degree, in connection with the theft of goods valued at slightly more than $16, from Avoca Super Foods. That same evening, 27-year old Aaron Gar Nelson, of Red Oak, was arrested at the Underwood Motel, for simple Domestic Assault with Injury, following an incident involving his girlfriend, who suffered apparent minor injuries. Authorities said also, 21-year old Antonio Saldana, of Council Bluffs, turned himself-in Friday, on a warrant for Violation of Probation.

43-year old David Page Mace, Jr., of Underwood, was arrested Friday night for OWI/2nd offense, following a traffic stop in Underwood. Mace was allegedly doing “burnouts” with his Ford truck at 3rd Street and Charles drive, in Underwood, when he was pulled over. 48-year old Eric Jon Mace, of Council Bluffs, was arrested early Saturday morning, for OWI/1st offense, following an investigation into an accident that happened at around 11:35-p.m. Friday, in the area of 235th and McPherson.

An investigation into a suspicious vehicle 3:30-a.m. Saturday in front of a bar in Hancock, resulted in the arrest of 25-year old Mark Francis Wilsey, of Bellevue, NE. His pickup was parked in front of the bar with its headlights on, long after the business closed. Wilsey was taken into custody for OWI/1st offense. And, a man from Cass County was arrested Sunday evening, following a traffic stop on a Cadillac Deville. 27-year old Jonathan Christian Pilgreen, of Griswold, was arrested for Driving While Revoked.

The Atlantic Police Department reports five arrests over the past week. On Sunday, 50-year old Mark Winston, of Atlantic, was arrested on a Cass County warrant for Theft in the 5th degree. On Saturday, 49-year old Kevin Canter, of Atlantic, was arrested for Burglary in the 3rd degree and Criminal Mischief in the 4th degree. Last Friday, 32-year old Alissa Vanmeter, of Atlantic, was arrested for OWI/1st offense. And, on Thursday, 30-year old Justin Cooley, of Atlantic, was arrested for Trespass/2nd offense. Atlantic Police also arrested 36-year old Chad Wilcox, of Atlantic, Thursday, for Disorderly Conduct.

All subjects were transported to the Cass County Jail and booked-in.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office says a woman from Lorimor reported early Saturday morning, that someone damaged a window at her home located in the 1100 block of Yellow Rose Avenue. Once inside, a Bersa Thunder .380 pistol was stolen. The weapon has a pink grip. Also missing, was a.17-caliber Savage rifle. The loss from the damage and theft was estimated at $900.

The sheriff’s office said also, a 2007 Chevy Malibu driven by 18-year old Louis Lumbard, of Diagonal, went out of control and rolled into a ditch and through a fence off of Pole Road before ending-up back on its wheels. The accident happened at around 12:23-p.m. Saturday. Authorities say Lumbard lost control of the car when he took his eyes off the road to look into the east ditch. He was unable to correct the vehicles’ path in-time.  Damage from the incident amounted to $4,500. Lumbard was not injured, and there were no citations issued.

Glenwood Police report two arrests occurred over the weekend. On Saturday, 37-year old John Adams, of Glenwood, was arrested for Theft in the 5th Degree, on a Montgomery County warrant for Driving While Barred, and on a Pottawattamie County warrant for Parole Violation. Adams was being held in the Mills County Jail without bond.

On Sunday, 52-year old Belynda Daniels, of Hamburg, was arrested for Driving While Revoked. Her cash or surety bond was set at $1,000. And, a Glenwood woman reported to police on Friday, that sometime between 2-p.m. and 10-p.m. Wednesday, someone struck the driver’s side sliding door on her 2016 Chrysler Town and County van. The incident happened while the vehicle was parked on the south side of the 100 block of 10th Street, in Glenwood. Damage to the van was estimated at $2,300.
