The Cass County Secondary Roads Department has announced that Cass County Road N28 (690th St.) will be closed on Wednesday, September 23, just south of Iowa 83 at the Iowa Interstate Railroad for repairs to the crossing. A signed detour using Iowa Highway 83, US Highway 71, and Cass Co. G35 (Lansing Rd.) will be provided. It is anticipated the crossing repairs will be completed and the roadway reopened on Friday, September 25th.
The Twisted Tail in BeeBeeTown is well known for its ribs, which won first prize in the 2013 Iowa State Fair Farm Bureau Cookoff. And now, the restaurant can add “Iowa’s Best Burger” to its list of awards.
The western Iowa restaurant has been owned by Ed and Ruth Spencer since 2011, and is managed by two of their three children, Luke and Hannah. In addition to the restaurant, the family also farms and runs a real estate and auction business.
Throughout the past few months, the family has worked together to ensure that their patrons have been able to continue enjoying the Twisted Tail’s delicious meals. “You will often see the grandchildren helping bus tables on Friday and Saturday nights,” says Hannah (Spencer) Johnson.
During the COVID shutdown the restaurant operated on a takeout only basis from March 18th to May 13th, however, they are now open again for dine in and takeout. All tables are at least six feet apart, and the former reception and party rooms now hold tables to allow for more social distancing between customers.
Ed’s love for history and antiques and their auction business has contributed to the decor and atmosphere of the restaurant. Antiques, memorabilia and reminders of BeeBeeTown’s history are scattered throughout the restaurant and bar areas.
Made out of 80% lean ground chuck, the winning burger patty is simply seasoned, allowing the true flavor of the meat to shine. The Certified Angus Beef is all locally sourced.
Eleven different burgers are featured on the menu, all using the same 8 oz. (half pound) patty. In addition to the burgers, the Steak Philly, Prime Rib French Dip, and Filet are all fan favorites.
This is the 11th year for the annual Best Burger contest sponsored by the Iowa Beef Industry Council, through the Iowa State Beef Checkoff Program, and the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association. The Twisted Tail Steakhouse & Saloon joins a great group of past best burger winners from around the state. Along with last year’s winner, Wood Iron Grille of Oskaloosa, previous winners include: 2018 – Café Beaudelaire; 2017- The Smokin’ Hereford BBQ of Storm Lake; 2016 – The Chuckwagon Restaurant in Adair; 2015 – The Cider House of Fairfield; 2014 – Brick City Grill in Ames; 2013 – 61 Chop House Grille in Mediapolis; 2012 – Coon Bowl III in Coon Rapids; 2011 – Rusty Duck in Dexter; and 2010 – Sac County Cattle Company of Sac City.
The designation as Iowa’s Best Burger comes after a two-phase competition. The first phase took place entirely based on votes from the public. For a month starting back in February, burger lovers went online and voted for their favorite Iowa burger, submitting nearly 7,000 votes representing around 630 restaurants. At the end of March, the ten restaurants with the most votes were declared the “Top 10.”
From there, three anonymous judges visit each of the restaurants, focusing on the burger patties and scoring them based on taste, doneness and presentation.
The final judging occurred in August and September, and the winner was revealed on September 21.

KELLOGG, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have identified a man whose body was found last week in a burning ditch in rural central Iowa. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation says the body is that of 44-year-old Michael Williams, of Grinnell. His body was found after authorities were called around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday for a fire in a ditch near Kellogg. Officials responded and quickly extinguished the flames, then found Williams’ body. Police have not given any information on how Williams died, but have declared his death a homicide. Grinnell College canceled classes Monday in light of the Williams’ death,
Atlantic Police report three arrests withing the past week.
On September 14th Officers arrested 59-year-old Paul Jordan of Temple, TX for Public Intoxication. Jordan was taken to the Cass County Jail and booked in and held.
On Septmber 15th Atlantic Police arrested 20-year-old Kyle Gehling of Atlantic on Cass County Warrants for Criminal Mischief 2nd Degree and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor. He was booked in and held at the Cass County Jail.
On Sunday, September 20th Atlantic Police arrested 22-year-old Cainan Edwards of Brayton on a Cass County Warrant for Violation of Probation. Edwards was booked in to the Cass County Jail and held.
AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior Blake Hinson will miss the 2020-21 season due to a continuing medical condition. The medical condition is unrelated to COVID-19.
Hinson transferred to Iowa State after playing the previous two seasons at Mississippi. At Mississippi, Hinson averaged 9.1 points and made 91 three-pointers while starting 58 of 60 games played.
“In his two and a half months with the program, Blake has become a valuable member of team and a leader within our program,” Iowa State head coach Steve Prohm said. “The most important thing to all of us is his well-being. He will be returning to Florida to be with his family at this time, but will continue his classwork. We fully support his desire to return home and look forward to his return when the time is right for him. I know that when he returns, Blake will continue to be a leader this season and next season when he is back on the court with our team.”
In accordance with HIPPA, Iowa State will have no further comment.
The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports two arrests over the weekend.
On Friday September 18th the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested 40-year-old Matthew Bernard Steffens of Atlantic on a charge of OWI 2nd Offense (Aggravated). Steffens was taken to the Cass County Jail and released later that day on his own recognizance.
On Saturday, September 19th the Cass County Sheriff’s Office arrested 25-year-old Jessica Anne Davis of Atlantic on a charge of Public Intoxication (Simple). Davis was taken to the Cass County Jail and released later that day on her own recognizance.
The Mills County Sheriff’s Office reports three arrests over the weekend.
On Friday at 3:31 a.m. Deputies arrested 39-year-old Tonweya Willow Langille of Malvern for Domestic Abuse Assault. Langille was taken to the Mills County Jail and held on no bond.
Also on Friday at 7:27 a.m. Deputies arrested 52-year-old Gregory Allen Riley of Red Oak for Driving While Barred. Riley was held in the Mills County Jail on $2,000 bond.
On Monday morning at 2:21 a.m. Mills County Deputies arrested 29-year-old Zachary Edward Peters of Murray, NE for Possession of a Controlled Substance, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Trespass 1st. The arrest occurred at the intersection of Karns Road and Lambert Avenue. Peters was taken to the Mills County Jail and held on $1,300 bond.
The Iowa Department of Public Health’s Coronavirus dashboard (as of 10-a.m) shows the number of positive COVID-19 test results in Cass and nine area Counties is on the rise. The 24-hour data show FIVE more cases in Cass County, for a total of 134. Audubon County reports six more cases, for a total of 65. There are eight new cases in Guthrie County (226 total), nine more cases in Pottawattamie County (for a total of 2,000), three more cases each in Harrison and Madison Counties, two more cases in Adair County (67 total), and one more case each, in Adams, Montgomery and Union Counties.
The dashboard indicated there are 624 new (Positive) COVID-19 cases reported since 10-a.m. Sunday, for a total of 80,633. IDPH says says also, 57,832 Iowans have recovered from the virus, one more person has died, for a total of 1,266 since the pandemic began. Officials report 870 of the COVID-19 deaths involved persons with pre-existing conditions, and 664 deaths have occurred at Long-Term Care facilities (Unchanged from Sunday).
There have been 741,361 Iowans tested for the virus. IDPH reported 4,038 lab test results received in the previous day, with 410 positive results and 3,618 negative results. IDPH reports a positivity rate of 8.9% over the last 14 days.
IDPH reported 39 long-term care facilities with coronavirus outbreaks, unchanged from the previous day. There are 902 positive cases and 480 recoveries within those facilities.
Across the State, hospitalizations are up slightly, to 271. The number of patients with COVID-19 who are in an ICU is also up, to 74; 34 people were admitted to a hospital since 10-a.m. Sunday, compared to 46 people in the previous report. There are 35 patients on ventilators across the state.
In western/southwest Iowa, hospitals report nine people are hospitalized with COVID-19 (1 less than on Sunday); four are in an ICU; No one was admitted to an area hospital with symptoms, which is four less than on Sunday, and one person remains on ventilator.

(Radio Iowa) – The health of the ethanol industry has been a staple of Iowa campaigns for years and 2020 is no different. This month, the Trump Administration denied 54 waivers that would have exempted oil refineries from blending ethanol into gasoline. In addition, Trump himself announced the E-P-A will let states decide new pumps aren’t necessary and gasoline that’s 15 percent ethanol can be dispensed from existing E-10 pumps. “That saves tremendous amounts of money for the people in the ethanol industry,” Trump says.
During a recent conference call organized by Joe Biden’s campaign, former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack questioning the election year timing of these announcements. “I think farmers are justified in being suspicious and concerned about what may happen after an election,” Vilsack said. So, what’s the economic impact of these recent ethanol pronouncements? Creighton University economist Ernie Goss says 40 percent of U.S. ethanol plants were temporarily shut down this spring.
The pandemic was the main driver of that, but Goss says the administration’s dithering over ethanol waivers for the oil industry didn’t help. “I won’t say it’s too late, but it certainly should have been earlier,” Goss says of the waiver announcement for 2011 through 2018 waivers. Iowa State University ag economist Chad Hart says getting retailers to sell a higher blend of ethanol seems to be the industry’s aim. “Originally it was E85, but a lot of the concentration now has been on E15 and getting that expanded nationwide,” Hart says.
President Trump announced a year ago that E-15 could be sold year-round. During a trip to Iowa last month, Trump’s ag secretary, Sonny Perdue, promised any future oil industry waivers would not reduce the federal ethanol production mandate of a net 15 billion gallons. “That’s an important consideration,” Perdue said. Iowa plants produce nearly a third of the U.S. ethanol supply.
