Atlantic rides winning streak into District clash with Clarinda

The Atlantic Trojans football team is riding a two-game win streak heading into their contest with the Clarinda Cardinals tonight. After a tough opening loss to Underwood, the Trojans have put together solid performances in wins against Kuemper Catholic and Greene County. They hope to carry that momentum into tonight’s contest. Clarinda is coming off their first win of the season over Red Oak after a couple of tough games to start the season. Cardinals Head Coach Collin Bevins feels like his team has improved each week of the season.

The Cardinals are led by a strong line up front on both sides of the ball and the offense is led by senior receiver Michael Shull and sophomore quarterback Wyatt Schmitt. Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott said the Cardinals always play a very physical style of football and the Trojans will need to be strong up front.

The defense has come up with some big plays in the two Trojan victories and Coach McDermott said he expects that veteran group to continue to set the tone.

The Trojan offense has started to achieve some good balance on offense has the season has progressed. Coach Bevins said his team will have to be ready to try to slow down the run game, while also paying attention to some speed on the outside.

We’ll have the Trojans and the Cardinals for you tonight on KJAN. The game is being played at Ram Memorial Field in Glenwood due to the ongoing construction at the Trojan Bowl. Start the evening by hearing an in depth interview with Coach McDermott on Trojan Preview at 4:45 p.m. Our weekly pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? will air at 6:00 p.m. followed by the Dvorak Tire and Service pregame show at 6:30 p.m. and kickoff at 7:00 p.m.

Change in Atlantic Fire Prevention Week activities

The Atlantic Fire Department reports there is a change in Fire Prevention Week activities. The department will not be holding the annual pancake breakfast as was previously reported. Fire Chief Tom Cappel says “it was our initial hope that we could still hold the breakfast and do so in a way we could still be in compliance with COVID best practices. However, after much discussion and planning, and the ongoing high numbers of cases, we don’t believe it’s possible. Our mission is to protect the public and first responders, so we will postpone the breakfast and hope to hold one early next year.”

The breakfast raises funds for the annual fire prevention parade and fire prevention activities in the community. This year’s parade was cancelled earlier due to COVID issues. The department will still be doing fire prevention activities on a modified basis with the local schools and daycare’s.

No charges will be filed in woman’s drowning, sheriff says

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Investigators in eastern Iowa say no charges will be filed in the June drowning death of a 21-year-old woman whose friends and family have pushed for more information about the case. The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said University of Iowa graduate Makeda Serenity Scott drowned while boating with a co-worker on Lake MacBride. In a statement, the office said that Scott was not wearing a life jacket when she lost her balance and fell off the kayak into the water. The co-worker tried to throw Scott a life jacket and made attempts to save her before she disappeared underwater.

Southwest Valley Invite

The Southwest Valley Invitational was held at Lake Icaria on Thursday night. Winterset swept the team titles, winning the girls title with 32 points and taking the boys crown with 45 points.

Braelyn Baker of Creston won the girls individual title with a time of 20:46.60. McKinna Hogan of Lenox was runner-up. William Gillis of Central Decatur won the boys race with a time of 16:51.60. Tyler Blay of West Nodaway was runner-up.

Coburg man arrested Friday morning

The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office reports a man from Coburg was arrested at around 7:20 this (Friday) morning. 52-year old Gregory Allen Riley was arrested on a Mills County warrant for Failure to Appear (in court) on a Driving While Barred, charge. Riley was turned over to Mills County Sheriff’s Deputies and held on a $2,000 bond.

Anita man arrested on warrants, Monday

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports an Anita man was arrested Monday, on two Sheriff’s Office warrants. 60-year old Daryl D. Armstrong, was taken into custody on the warrants for Violation of a No Contact Order. He was released from the Cass County Jail the following day, on $6,300 bond.

On Sept. 12th at around 6-a.m., Cass County Deputies responded to a reported accident on North Street, in Wiota. Authorities say a 2001 Ford F250 was located on the north side of North Street in a ditch with damage to the pickup, a street sign, and a MidAmerican Energy pole. No one was in the vehicle when it was located. Upon further investigation, 35-year old Jeffrey Ford Lillard, of Wiota, was arrested on a charge of False Report to Public Entity. Lillard was booked into the Cass County Jail on September 17, 2020, and released later that day on $1,000 bond.

Senator Ernst changes up annual fundraiser motorcycle ride due to COVID

(Radio Iowa) – Senator Joni Ernst won’t be having the “roast” part of her yearly campaign fundraiser due to the pandemic, but she’s hosting a two day “ride” for motorcyclists next month.”We are going to do a ‘Joni’s Ride Across Iowa,” she says. That’s J-RAI (JAY-RYE) — a sort of hat tip to RAGBRAI, the Des Moines Register’s Annual Bike Ride Across Iowa. Money raised from motorcyclists’ registrations for the senator’s event will go toward a Cedar Rapids-based derecho relief fund and the Puppy Jake Foundation which trains service dogs for veterans. Ernst is running for election to a second term in the U.S. Senate this year and, according to a campaign news release, there will be a short program and she’ll speak to reporters at stop along the way.

The ride starts in Sioux City on October 10th, with stops in Carroll, Des Moines that day. Riders will start out from Des Moines on October 11th, with a stop in Cedar Rapids before it ends in Davenport. Riders will not be in a tight formation, as in the previous “Roast and Ride” events Ernst has held, but are to make their way from city to city at their own pace. In 2016, Ernst’s “Roast and Ride” featured then-candidate Donald Trump. In 2017, Vice President Mike Pence rode into Ernst’s fundraiser on a motorcycle.
