LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin-based Kwik Trip Inc. is recalling some parfaits because they may contain undeclared traces of cashews or almonds. Kwik Trip said Tuesday the convenience store chain is recalling Kitchen Cravings Strawberry and Mixed Berry Parfaits in an 8.25-ounce cup. The La Crosse-based company says consumers who are allergic to cashews or almonds may risk allergic reactions if they eat the product.

Kwik Trip says it recalled the product after a chocolate-covered cashew or almond was discovered in granola mix from an outside supplier. Kwik Trip says it has removed the parfaits from its stores due to the undeclared allergen.

No illnesses have been reported. The product was sold at Kwik Trip convenience stores in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa (Kwik Star) with a sell-by date on or before Dec. 6, 2018.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Federal investigators have issued their final report on a fiery 2017 derailment in northwest Iowa that was caused by a broken rail. The National Transportation Safety Board issued its final report Tuesday on the Union Pacific derailment that released 322,000 gallons of ethanol near Graettinger.

The agency said last month that Union Pacific’s maintenance was inadequate before the March 2017 derailment, and Federal Railroad Administration inspectors didn’t do enough to identify flaws in the track.

The FRA is still reviewing the agency’s recommendation to improve training for its inspectors.
No injuries were reported in connection with the derailment in a rural area about 160 miles (257 kilometers) northwest of Des Moines. Five of the 20 derailed tankers plunged into Jack Creek.

Bleeding from a traumatic injury can lead to death in just a few minutes, well before medical help can arrive. Beth Olsen, Director of Cass County Public Health, says “Stop the Bleed teaches someone how to safely and immediately take action, potentially saving a life. Everyone should know how to recognize life-threatening bleeding and take appropriate steps to control bleeding until help arrives.”

The Stop the Bleed campaign is a national initiative originating from the Department of Defense, Homeland Security, the White House, and other governmental and private agencies. The program is currently being championed by the American College of Surgeons-Committee on Trauma. The program is based on recommendations identified in the Hartford Consensus, which was a review of mass casualty and active shooter events.

The program is designed to teach civilian bystanders basic hemorrhage control techniques.

The Atlantic School District’s Board of Education will hold a Work Session 5:30-p.m. Wednesday, in the High School Media Center. On their agenda, is discussion with regard to Facility Planning. And, action on Contract Recommendations for Shannon DeArment (Nurse/1:1 Health Associate), and Ernie Hawthorne (Bus Driver).

Immediately following the Work Session, the Atlantic School Board will adjourn and move into a Closed Session, to conduct Superintendent Steve Barber’s annual evaluation.

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) — A northern Iowa hospital has notified around 1,900 patients about what may have been an inappropriate access of their medical records. Mercy Medical Center — North Iowa in Mason City says in letters sent Monday that the records were accessed by an employee between July 2017 and this past July, but officials have been unable to determine whether the records were viewed for job-related purposes.

Hospital spokeswoman Stephanie Duckert said Tuesday that the employee would not have been able to access financial information such as Social Security numbers. Duckert also said the employee resigned his or her job before the hospital learned of the problematical access. She would not provide his or her name.

Mercy says hospital officials are reviewing privacy practices and are conferring with law enforcement.

A traffic stop last week in Orient, resulted in a woman being cited for two offenses. Adair County Sheriff Jeff Vandewater reports 38-year old Donna Marie Ott, of Orient, was cited for Driving While License Revoked/OWI-related, after her SUV was pulled over at around 9:30-p.m. on Nov. 21st. Ott was also cited for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, after a pipe used for smoking marijuana was found in the vehicle. Ott admitted to smoking marijuana on a regular basis, but denied the pipe was hers. She was cited at the scene, and released.

Atlantic Police Chief Dave Erickson today (Tuesday) issued a report on eight arrests that date back to Nov. 7th. Last Saturday, 27-year old Grayson Jones, and 22-year old Cassie Swensen, both of Atlantic, were arrested for Operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent. On Nov. 23rd, 23-year old Troy Canfield, of Atlantic, was arrested for Domestic Abuse Assault.

On Nov. 18th, 39-year old Misty Scybert, of Atlantic, was arrested on a Cass County warrant for Violation of Probation, and, 51-year old Michael Jessen, of Anita, was arrested for OWI. On Nov. 17th, 73-year old James Graham, of Atlantic, was arrested for Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, Disorderly Conduct, Public Intoxication, and Interference with Officials Acts. On Nov. 16th, 43-year old Samantha Clark, of Atlantic, was arrested on Cass County warrants for two counts of Probation Violation. And, on Nov. 7th, 24-year old Nicholas Renner, of Atlantic, was arrested on Cass County warrants for Burglary in the 3rd Degree, and Theft in the 2nd Degree.

All subjects were booked into the Cass County Jail.

The Adair County Board of Supervisors will meet 9-a.m. Wednesday in their Board Room at the Adair County Courthouse. During their regular session, the Board will hear from County Treasurer Brenda Wallace, with regard to a Tax Abatement Resolution. They’ll also hold a public hearing on a Resolution to reduce the level of maintenance on a Level C Road on 180th Street. In other business, the Adair County Supervisors will hear from Ryan Smith with the Snyder Corporation, with regard to an Add-on Agreement for Beacon, and interactive public access portal that allows users to view County and City information, public records and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) via an online portal. And, they’ll hear a regular report from County Engineer Nick Kauffman.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office has released more information on three recent accidents. Last Wednesday, at around 8:35-a.m., Deputies responded to a report of a two-vehicle accident at Highway 148 North and Main Street in Anita. A 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe owned and driven by 29-year old Lynsey Marie Powell, of Exira, was stopped at the southbound stop sign at Highway 148 when Powell’s vehicle was struck in the front by a 2015 Lexis owned and driven by 44-year old Kristine Lou Karns, of Anita, as she was making a turn northbound onto Highway 148. No injuries were reported. Damage to Powell’s vehicle is estimated at $4,000; damage to Karns’ vehicle is estimated at $5,000. Karns was cited for Improper Left Turn.

That same day, at around 1:25-p.m., Cass County deputies responded to a report of an accident Main Street in Anita. Officials say a 2016 Ford F250 driven by 49-year old Wade Darin Epp, of St. Joseph, MO, was pulling a trailer westbound on Main Street, when the trailer was struck by a 2006 Buick LaCrosse, owned and driven by 85-year old Marcia Mae Lantz, of Anita, as she was backing out of a parking stall. No injuries were reported. Damage to the trailer is estimated at $1,000; damage to Lantz’s vehicle is estimated at $1,500.

And, on November 20th at around 9:40-a.m., deputies in Cass County responded to a report of a one-vehicle accident on 690th Street ¼ mile north of Memphis Road. A 2017 Peterbilt Crane driven by 50-year old Wesley Alan Nicholas, of Essex, was northbound on 690th Street when the vehicle entered the eastbound ditch, rolling one and a quarter times, landing on the vehicle’s right side. Nicholas was taken to CCMH via Medivac for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $500,000. Nicolas was cited with Failure to Maintain Control. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by Cumberland, Anita, and Massena fire departments and Cass County EMA.

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office today (Tuesday), released a report on five recent arrests. Last Thursday (11/22), 23-year old Torri Nicole Huerta, of Griswold, was arrested on a Sheriff’s Office warrant for Child Endangerment. Huerta was released later that day on her own recognizance. On Nov. 21st, 40-year old Aaron Joseph Moore, of Wiota, was arrested on charges of Harassment 1st Degree; Possession Marijuana 1st Offense; Interference with Official Acts; and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Moore was taken to the Cass County Jail and released the following day on $3,000 bond. Also arrested Nov. 21st, was 66-year old Stephen Dale Wenzl, of Council Bluffs. He was arrested on warrants out of Dallas county. Wenzl was taken to the Cass County Jail and was released later that day to Dallas county authorities.

On Nov. 20th, 39-year old Matthew Robert Prall, of Anita, was arrested on a charge of Harassment 1st Degree. Prall was taken to the Cass County Jail and released the following day on his own recognizance. And, on November 17th, Cass County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 73-year old James Eldon Graham, of Atlantic, on a charge of Assaulting a Peace Officer. Graham was also charged by the Atlantic Police Department with Assaulting a Peace Officer; Public Intoxication; Disorderly Conduct; and Interference with Official Acts. He was taken to the Cass County Jail where he remains held on $2,000 bond.
